“Nothing special hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

The range of reviews of Ameg lodge reflect that it is in a nice setting with a green and leafy compound, swimming pool and fancy exercise room, as well as a welcoming open air restaurant and bar. But the rooms are basic (no a/c) and not particularly comfortable, the service in the restaurant is awfully slow, and the breakfast buffet is the worst we had in three weeks and 10 hotels in Tanzania and Zanzibar. This lodge is meant to be a cut above the average in Moshi, but realistically is not. Not a place to go to save money or to have a dream honeymoon. Tolerable choice for pre or post Kilimanjaro hike.

Room Tip: All rooms are identical. They are in pairs, and can by joined together for families

“New management has turned this place around!”

I stayed at Ameg before and after a grueling Kili climb and it was the perfect, relaxing break. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The service was great, especially from a friendly lady called "Happiness"! Be patient when waiting for your food, but when you get it, you won't be disappointed. The gym and pool also looked nice. The porters and guides that they work with are also AMAZING - the kind of people you will remember for the rest of your life because they go above and beyond the call of duty. My guide up Kili was Mosha who saved my life and motivated me to get all the way up to Uhuru peak. Even though everyone was exhausted, he was singing, dancing and smiling the entire time.

“Excellent service and lovely food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

I booked a party of 20 from UK and a party of 19 from USA to stay at Ameg Lodge and then go on to do the Kilimanjaro climb as part of our charity challenge. I was assured by the management that all our requirements will be met as requested like vegetarian food, extra guides etc.
We were not disappointed - all our needs were met as requested. The stay at Ameg lodge before and after was very pleasant and we had special food catered for us as we were a big group. Regarding the climb, we had excellent guides who helped 15 of us from the UK group to reach the Uhuru peak and 3 to Gillman's point.

I stayed here with a large party before and after climbing Kilimanjaro. I found the place to be a comfortable, relaxing, safe haven. It was my first visit to Africa and I wasn't expecting luxury but I was pleasantly surprised by my room which was spacious, clean and comfortable with good facilities including mosquito netted four poster bed, TV, wireless internet, an adequate shower and with basic toiletries provided. Bottled water was also provided each day.
I agree with the colonial feel of the complex. The grounds were very well tended with some beautiful plants and trees and a resident marabu giving some good photo opportunities. Best of all is the fabulous view of Kilimanjaro overlooking the complex. There is also a nice pool and a well kitted out gym.
There was a good choice of food served in a lovely open plan covered restaurant/bar. The service was a little slow but the staff all very polite and attentive and the food was good and freshly prepared. Overall I found the staff went out of their way to be helpful and the owners were particularly attentive and concerned that our visit went well and that we were all happy. They also organised the Kilimanjaro trek with highly experienced guides and our group had a very successful climb.
Overall this proved to be a perfect base for our party and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a base pre and post climb or safari in Tanzania.
