“fantastic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2011

My first trip to Morocco was back in 1984,then again in 1991 in the same hotel "Chellah."How can anyone criticise this wonderful country,it's friendly people and the spotlessly clean hotel....not to mention the lovely food...perfect.
However i am on about going again,if not this year then the next to the same hotel, and hopefully,to see the same photographer who had recognised me previously.Sorry but i have forgotten his name...but never his friendly face.
Visit the Medina is a must, and its easy to get there on foot, although it is quite a way.Just make sure you know how to get out of the market..it's easy when you know the secret.Moroccan night is fantastic but be prepared to tip up on every act.Theres a great little cheap bar called the Juan -de-argo just down the road,it may be rough but its very welcoming, but if you carry on right to the end of the road..the big hotel where Humphrey Bogart and Sir Winston Churchill stayed..they have a fantastic night club. Its well worth just getting around on foot to discover things for yourself....quite interesting and, please don't be afraid to talk to the locals..you can learn quite a lot from these lovely people......especially the night watchmen on every street corner.Although it may have changed from when i was there all those years ago...i still love the place and its culture, and so different.

“Excellent value for money!!”

Positive aspects: Friendly staff, good gardens and a clean swimming pool, wonderful breakfast (including ready-made omelettes and typical Moroccan "pancakes" cooked in location by a woman in traditional dress and using a traditional griddle), crispy clean linen and towels, good beds and very convenient for the Medina (10 min walking).
Negative aspects: A little bit neglected furniture and bathroom -but this one clean-, some dust on the tv (but nothing serious), an odd smell in the corridor (maybe due to the carpet cleaning system) and a bit noisy at early morning (7 o'clock)
I must say that I paid 75€ pp for the boat trip ticket (Tarifa-Tangier and back), harbour-hotel transfers and two hotel nights including breakfast (tour operator "Luxotour")... so... Who could ask for anything more?

“Hotel Chellah...smell-a”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2010

I stayed here with my Mother-in-law when overnighting here on a 2-day Morocco tour. It was not the hotel advertised with the tour, but I realize substitutions happen.

The hotel had a reasonable appearance when we walked in, and prompt bell service to bring us up to our room, but the first room they brought us to wreaked of sewage smell!!! It was so awful we were gagging. I advised the bellman we could not stay in this room, so he brought us to another.

The new room did not smell, but was not any better in terms of updates. The room and furnishings were very tired looking and had the appearance of having "my first apartment" furniture...cheap and old. On top of that, as 2 women travelling alone, the security on the door was really lacking. Just a cheap doorknob to lock the door and no deadbolt. We ended up barracading the door with the cheap furniture at night to feel a little better without a deadbolt.

In the lobby they had some nice new LCD TV's set up with TV and sports blaring, but not a single woman in the place so we felt uncomfortablle. We ended up having a drink at the Irish pub down the street, and shopping at the friendly handicrafts shop across the street.

The food, and service in the restaurant, I have to say was very good at the hotel. For breakfast they had hand-made fresh Moroccan style pancakes you could drizzle with honey. Delicious.

The front desk was very helpful as well in locating a guide for us the following day to walk us through the Kasbah...20 Euros for the 2 of us, and we had a personal 3-hour walking tour.

The grounds are quite pretty and we both agreed that the angles we took our pictures in made the place look nicer than it is.

It's too bad the rooms are such crap and the lobby so intimidating....the rest of the hotel is far better than those 2 things, but unfortunately because of those 2 things I would not recommend staying here.
