“Very good old fashioned service”

This was our first night in Morocco and I must say Tangier is not really somewhere I would recommend to go to. That said the Riad Tanja was very nice and the service was really good with one man looking after us very well, including mint tea on arrival and taking us down to a taxi and flagging one down for us. The room was very comfortable and the shower/bathroom very good.
One thing about the room that was not so great was the smell, it was obvious people had been smoking in the room, which didn't smell too great, there was also a horrible smell (not the fish smell described before) on an evening. In some areas there was a bit of a damp problem.
The resturant was very good as well with lots and lots of food and a man playing music non stop in the corner. However it was fairly pricey, probably more than we would usually pay, but we were keen not to get lost in the medina again.

“Very friendly staff - beware!”

If you arrive with the ferry from Tarifa, it's a short walk from the port and easy to find (signposted). The rooms were spacey and airy, well furnished and typical Moroccan style. Breakfast was a mix of European and Moroccan style, and there was plenty. At the same time, there was no room for choice or variety.

Checking in and and out took more than 30 minutes, and involved a lot of talking. Also, during our stay, the staff were very keen on getting to know us and sharing their life stories, which sometimes felt a but overwhelming, especially when we were in a rush to get to the ferry.

Otherwise, as per the previously posted complaints about the fish market, it did not bother us at all. Actually the view over the local market is enjoyable.

“We would not stay there again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2011

Unfortunately, we read the story how they throw out the gay couple too late. Otherwise we would have not booked this Riad. They welcomed us with fruits, tea and cookies. The room was muggy and dark. The carpet was very dirty. The rest of the room was not that bad. As it is normal for a Riad, this one was also very clairaudient. Given the fact that there is also a restaurant in it, it was very noisy until midnight. From the restaurant, you have a very nice view from several terraces over town. The breakfast was one of the best we had during our travel (we stayed in about 10 Riads): fresh juice, all kinds of jam, crepes, joghurt. They told us that we can have breakfast from 07:00 a.m. As we came at 07:30 a.m. nothing was ready and we had to wait...

“Probably not bad for Tangier”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2010

Only stayed at Riad Tanja one night, and chose becasue of walking distance to CTM Bus Station and the port. It is actually well signposted once you find the right road up the hill and the Riad is nicely appointed.

Staff were very friendly, though English is poor.

We were advised that breakfast would be starting at 7am, however no-one was awake/around unil after 7:30am. When breaksfast did finally arrived, it was pretty basic, with no fruit.

We had a room at the very top overlooking the market and a park. Larger room than we'd had a other riads, comfortable bed, with TV (which was a first for us in Morocco). Tangier is a pretty rowdy place and we were woken several times with people fighting and screaming outside...

Overall our impression was positive - we wondered whether ownership has changed recently?

“Incredibly Gracious Hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2010

We arrived bedraggled and smelly after an overnight train from Marrakech, without so much as a phonecall beforehand to alert the innkeeper. I was hoping just to drop our bags off and than go find a cafe to sit in until our rooms were ready in the afternoon. Indeed, it was painfully clear that we were waking the whole house up when we rang the doorbell at the inexcusable hour of 7am......yet the innkeeper himself greeted us graciously, and wouldn't even entertain the idea of us dropping our bags off and leaving. He fed us a magnificient breakfast and let us stay in another room while ours was being prepared. Both rooms we stayed in were excellent and very comfortable, though the larger suite (where we were for only a few hours) lacked an exterior window. I would have missed that if we'd been there longer, but some folks probably prefer the privacy.
Our first day in Tangier went rather poorly, and whether because of a lack of sleep or just general traveling unease, we stuck to our room most of the day and evening. I don't know if he noticed that or not, but our host arranged the next day for us to go by taxi -- using an English-speaking driver who was practically guide -- to Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. The guide ultimately also took us to a great lookout point in Tangier, and on the way back bought us a kilo of tangerines. That experience, plus a great dinner at the riad's restaurant, totally turned our experience of Tangier around. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you, Riad Tanja!
