I was looking for a romantic weekend hideaway for my husband's surprise 50th birthday celebration. Neither of us have ever been to Morocco before but I wanted a trip that would enable us to explore somewhere new: So I decided to book to stay in Tangier at Villa Josephine following the excellent reviews that I had read on Trip Advisor. Luckily we were not to be disappointed.
Tangier is not the most appealing of cities with few tourist attractions but Villa Josephine far from made up for this. Positioned high up above the City, arriving there is liking stepping into another world. The house, its gardens and swimming pool are all beautifully maintained: The Villa itself is stuffed full of antique furniture, light fittings and paintings complete with wood floors and oak panelling. You don't have the sense of staying at a hotel but at one of the finest homes in the world with a just touch of faded colonialism.
We stayed in Room 105, a Junior Suite with Terrace/ Sea View. The crisp white linen sheets were changed daily with clean towels replaced every time we stepped out of the room - I can't remember anywhere in the world where you receive that service anymore. The Terrace has a small table and chairs - perfect for enjoying breakfast - and a large sofa and chairs for relaxing whilst the gentle breezes blow in from the Straits of Gibraltar.
We were the only guests staying at the 9 bedroom hotel that weekeend so we had a full compliment of staff to attend to our every need. The friendly chauffer met us at the Port and was at our disposal for any short journeys throughout our stay at no extra charge. Indeed all the staff were extremely polite and helpful and the Mademoiselle at the desk advised and arranged for a taxi to take us on a daytrip to Chefchaouen.
We ate both nights at the hotel restaurant. The mediterranean/international style cuisine was good but not excellent but after having had delicious 3 course meals at typical moroccan restaurants, one inTangier the other in Chefchaouen, we really were quite happy to eat this more simple, unfussy food. The barman however made great cocktails - try the Mojito!
The prices at Villa Josephine, at the upper end of the scale, are expensive, certainly by Moroccan standards but it was certainly worth it. It is not a place for wild parties and not really suitable for children but for us it provided the perfect weekend we were looking for. W really liked Morrocco as a country with its bustling bazaars, unique style decor, wonderful smells, beautiful countryside and more donkeys than we have ever seen in our lives. I would however recommend Villa Josesphine to anyone who was looking for a romantic and luxury weekend in Morocco as it offers you a peaceful and welcome haven to return to.
