“Interesting ....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2011

The Soundouss is coveniently located to federal Ministry buildings and a decent shopping area. It is about 4 km from the old Medina and downtown shopping areas. The property is very clean and well maintained, with a nice sitting area off the main foyer and a decent (but smoky) bar snugged away up a "secret" stairway. My room was small but clean, with the exception of a dirty shower curtain and blanket. The furnishings were pleasant and included a flat screen tv, fridge/mini-bar and a heater/air conditioner. The heater worked, though heaters in two colleauges' rooms did not. Internet reception was very spotty; it is included in the room price. Also included is the breakfast, which was not very impressive - days-old bread and croissants, sliced cold-cuts, yogurt, cereal (but not milk) and sliced fruit in juice. The breakfast coffee was frequently cold and weak. Luckily, there are numerous good pastry shops within a three-block radius of the hotel. Although smoking is prohibited in hotel rooms, guests in two surrounding rooms were smoking and this made for an unpleasant couple of nights. Perhaps the hotel should tell its guests that smoking is not allowed, and take steps to prevent this from happening in the future.

The hotel would have ranked a "2" if not for the staff, who we found to be friendly and kind.

This hotel was recommended by colleagues, and l was impressed, the beautiful decor was wonderful to come back to after a busy working day. I found the staff polite and cordial. The food in the restaurant was delicious,. the traditional dishes with a glass of wine, superb.
I did some sightseeing arranged for me by the staff, was very enjoyable and was really well looked after.
My room was lovely, clean and comfortable as were those of my colleagues.
I will be travelling to Rabat again in the near future and am looking forward
to having more time to spend at the charmig Soundouss.

“Passable in a quirky way”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 May 2010

I'll admit this is not the lap of luxury, but the architecture and proximity to my local office made it worthwhile. The building itself is very neat. The big downside is the internet. It never worked in my room but always the lobby. After a little snooping I discovered that they placed the wireless units on shelves high up in corners of the common areas on each floor. The problem is that the entire hotel, including inner walls, is made out of solid stone. So if you need to use the internet, try the lobby. The service is pretty hit or miss, and you have to hunt for a waiter. But the food was actually very good, and they sell you wine by the bottle and keep it for you until the next night. This wouldn't be my once-in-a-lifetime destination, but people might like the experience if they can roll with it.

“Three visits this year, what was I thinking??”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2010

Soundouss has a beautiful period look with an Art Deco entry, sweeping staircase, old tile floors and lots of potential to be a really superb hotel. I've stayed three times for business, in January, February and April 2010. I stayed the second and third times purely because its location is very convenient for my work.
First, the expensive internet has not worked well on all three visits, always with a different excuse. This time I could only use it in the lobby area, not in my room. When they supposedly repaired it the second day, the signal would drop every 5 minutes or so and I'd have to log on again. They comp'd the sketchy internet, but I won't stay there for business again--reliable communication is too important. In addition, some of the staff simply don't seem to know what they were doing. The bathroom this time was visibly dirty--especially the exterior of the toilet (gross!). When I complained, housekeeping sent a maid to clean, but she cleaned my colleagues' bathroom instead of mine. Next, the reception assured us we didn't need reservations at the popular restaurant we wanted and didn't offer to check for us (we were turned away). Generally we found that while the front desk staff were pleasant, they don't have 'hotelier' skills (and only a couple speak English). Other problems: an incessant clicking came from the ceiling (faulty vent?), the safe box didn't work, and the street out front is very noisy, so you can either close the windows and overheat (upper floors in April are pretty warm and air conditioning isn't turned on yet), or leave them open and wake at 6am to nonstop honking. On our day off, we asked the front desk to arrange a guide for the next day. The reception clerk had never heard of such a strange request, apparently (ummm, hello...Morocco...hotel...sightseeing...?). We ended up with a driver who was a complete jerk, spoke no English (one of us spoke French well, otherwise we would have been completely lost with him), there was no guide (he picked up an ancient guy who spoke rudimentary English to act as our guide) and the driver demanded a tip, even though he only drove us for 2/3 of the agreed-upon time.
I also ate dinner in the hotel once in January--that was more than enough. The food was terrible and the waiter was a sarcastic, mean little man. We couldn't leave the restaurant fast enough. However, breakfast is edible and I actually liked the coffee.
I continue to have business in Rabat, but I won't stay at Soundouss ever again.

“Lacking in Customer Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2009

If you travel to Rabat before the weather gets warm, don't count on having heat to keep you warm. Also, don't come here expecting the staff to care about taking care of any of your needs. Very nonchalant attitude about getting things done around here. We checked in on Tuesday and asked for a working safe in one of the two rooms we have. It is now Saturday and still no working safe. There's also no continuity in the rooms. One room has a nice bowl of fruit and stationery and a FLAT SCREEN HD TV and my room has a 13 inch television with four French Channels. I had one English language channel (CNN) up until early Friday morning, but it is no longer available. The other stations I have go in and out. When I called front desk to ask about the problem, I was told it will be fixed... but guess what???
