“Avoid the Transatlantique”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2007

We stayed the night of October 22 here. It must have been a good hotel once, the buildings were big, but it now looks elderly and shabby. We had the impression that very little money was spent on maintenance, the furniture was tatty, the carpets were soiled and dirty. Breakfast was very basic. It is nominally a 4 star but is best avoided.

“used to be a beautiful hotel...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2007

Unfortunately the "Transatlantique" is now in a very run down state. The bathroom fixtures were falling apart, there were cigarette burns on the bed blanket, the paint was peeling from the window frames.... everything in the room screamed: fix me or clean me !

Unless the rooms get a complete overhaul, this hotel is best avoided !

This is a pity as both the location (with the view of Meknes) and the architecure of the 1920s could be very pleasing.

“dont stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2007

This hotel was terrible. It stank of cat's urine, had a noisy nightclub out the back which kept us awake all night, overcharged for laundry and couldn't be bothered calling us a cab. The restaurant was awful too. Stay anywhere else in Meknes, just don't stay here!

“Once upon a time there was the Transatlantique...”

This hotel opened in 1927 as a base for land excursions of the French shipping company "Compagnie Générale Transatlantique" from where it derives its name. The hotel is situated in a fairly quiet residential district about 1km away from both the medina and the European town. Upon entering the property grounds one starts to wonder if the hotel is still open as each time I passed this way nobody was to be seen. In fact the hotel comprises two parts - the original 1927 wing and an extension built in the 1960's. When I stayed the original building was closed for renovation so I stayed in the newer wing. My overall impression was one that although there were no real problems, the hotel has something of a "has been" atmosphere and does not make full use of its potential. Check-in was efficient and all staff were pleasant and welcoming. The room was spacious with a view over the larger swimming pool (there are two) and the medina beyond. Although the room was essentially clean and comfortable, the carpet would benefit from a good steam clean. This hotel is rated 4 stars, but in my opinion some facilities are missing for a hotel of this category, i.e. no minibar - not even a bottle of water in the room, minimal toiletries in bathroom - just soap and sachet shampoo, no room safe. The grounds are pleasant and relaxing. I did not use the swimming pools as the water was not warm enough for my taste. Breakfast, although adequate, again I would say, is not really 4 star standard. It consists of a buffet where there is orange juice, hard boiled eggs, olives, rather strangely coloured meat and cheese, bread and a few pastries. At the next table someone was rather upset that tea came in a pot for which it was impossible to find a lid! I ate dinner in the restaurant the first evening and decided not to return on subsequent nights - very limited choice of local dishes and others rather unappealing. My overall feeling is that this hotel needs a good shake up to put the shine back on its four stars.
