I am lucky enough to travel often, to places as diverse as Madagascar and Laos. I always try and stay somewhere owned by individuals, which have a unique character and give something back to the local community. Riad Djebel is an outstanding example of a place to stay which is comfortable, welcoming, charming, friendly, value for money, and stylish, all rolled into one! I had suite 3, which is very large and has an amazing tadelekt bathroom. Now, if you're the sort of person who has their central heating turned up to 30 all the time, and you visit in winter, you may find it a bit chilly. But don't worry - you'll find a space heater in the wardrobe, just plug that in in the bathroom and it will be toasty in no time.
So, that's got the one (slightly) bad point out of the way. To add to what has already been posted by others, I'd also like to recommend a cookery lesson from Sumia. Though you do need to speak French to make the most of it. For me, the best bit wasn't learning how to cook her delicious chicken tagine, it was visiting the souk with her and being able to appreciate daily life. I loved the shop she got the chicken from: at the back, there are large coops (I would like to say spacious, but ..) crammed full of live chickens and rabbits!
As so many people have already commented, Sylvian, Miguel and Mustafa are so very charming, funny and helpful. Thank you, Sylvian, for the fruits! And the free lipstick ...
You will probably find the first time you make the trip from the Riad to "the big square" (as all the 'helpful' local boys call it) rather daunting, but you will soon get the hang of it. On the way back, if you turn down a large street and pass a fishmongers (or smell fish) you've gone the wrong way - go back and turn left down the smaller street. Also look out for the pharmacy: a key landmark just before the snicket to the Riad itself - marked by a Tide sign and a small boy selling sweets from a battered plastic tray.
I will be back, with my camera, just as soon as I find some spare holiday days.
