“a very nice riad with kind hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2007

We booked this Riad through Eric at Riad Maipa; Riad Bakara is run by his daughter Anouk. Although Anouk and her partner might not have Eric's experience and contacts, they certainly make up for it with enthusiasm, flexibility, and kindness, which made our stay. And Hassan (who cooks) was effeciency personified.

The Riad is not too difficult to find (just three turns from the main square). It was hard to predict how long it would take to get from the main Square (as it depended on how busy the tiny streets were!) but it was no more than 15 minutes.

The Riad is simply but beautifully decorated and there were always bowls of flowers and roses in the fountain. There is a plunge pool (not needed in November!) and a really lovely terrace with a hammock, sun loungers and a shady dining area.

I would certainly recommend this riad and its very helpful hosts.

Our room was on the ground floor and I think perhaps that in the winter higher rooms might be better as there was a small problem with condensation on the (very pretty) plaster walls and floor. The other disadvantage of the ground floor is that (as in any riad) you are aware of what is going on in the courtyard. Which is not a problem unless you have a very loud English person checking in at 1am!

Hassan's cooking is very good (you should eat in at least once - but remember to book in advance), and the breakfasts (served wherever you wanted in the riad and at any time) were delicious (french bread, local breads or pastries, home made yoghurt, juice etc).

“very chilled out, georgeous!”

Geoffrey and Anouk are a lovely young french couple who just opened Riad Bakara a month ago.
We had tried to book Riad Maipa which is owned by Anouk's parents but as it was fully booked geoffrey recommended we try Riad Bakara. We were not disappointed.

Just as the website photos suggest the rooms are stylish and the riad is relaxed and comfortable. We stayed in the Passion room with ruby draped moroccan silk and tadellakht bath with two seats it was just beautiful!
We stayed 6 nights and the whole time we felt like we owned our own little moroccan palace! It was glorious, Geoffrey and Anouk are soo lovely and very accomodating. We were picked up from the airport and met by geoffrey and eric at the square.

A mistake had been made the first night when our room was not available but we were put up in a private riad which was lavish and much more expensive that what we were paying!

Breakfast was included and the price was 85 euros. The riad is simple and so relaxing. Perfect for just getting away. There are no TVs and DVD players but who needs them when you have a terrace and sunbeds, lounge and courtyard to play in!!

The best thing about Riad Bakara is that after a hard day of walking dust filled roads, souq shopping and motorbike dodging all you really want to do is relax in the riad where you feel safe and at home, especially with Geoffrey's buddha bar tunes softly filling the courtyard!

The Riad can book restaurants for you, organise masseuse and as we did, it is a nice luxury to be driven privately to essouaira! Hassan and Iham are lovely . Breakfast was yummy and brought out no matter what time we woke up!!!
Geoffrey is in the process of perfecting his English which really isn't as bad as he thinks!!! and he certainly helped us brush up on our French!!
I would love to return to Riad Bakara, i miss it already!!!
