“A true gem! Value for money, great location, friendly staff and a relaxing ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

From the moment we arrived, we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at this Riad. The staff were amazingly genuine, friendly and helpful - particularly as this was our first time in Morocco. The riad is intimate, beautifully laid-out and surprisingly quiet, given its superb location close to the Square in the Medina.

We stayed in the White room, and agree with other reviewers that this room had (in our opinion) the best location and the most privacy, even though it may have been a bit smaller. Yes, the bathroom is petite and only shielded by a shower curtain - something to be aware of if your travel buddy and you aren't super close - but is otherwise fine.

The terrace is amazing! Views over the medina, mosques and out to the mountains. We spent a lot of time up there relaxing with a book or some mint tea. Breakfast was very filling and delicious - Aziz and the other staff pick up local items to include that morning, such as fresh yogurt, pancakes/crumpets, and freshly squeezed OJ. Yum yum!

Thanks to all staff for making our trip to Marrakech so special - we highly recommend a stay at Riad Dar Maia.

TIP = Take advantage of the 12 euro pick-up airport service if this is your first visit - once you are oriented, this place is easy to find but you will struggle if you haven't been before! The driver meets you at the arrivals gate and delivers you to the front door of the Riad. Well worth it in our opinion.

“Small, pretty and quiet”

The Riad is very pretty and the roof terrace has great views and lots of comfy corners to relax in. You can choose to hide away or socialise with other guests. Not as many opportunities for having hot mint tea as in other riads. The breakfasts were lovely and Aziz was very helpful and friendly.

If not being picked up from the airport you will need a guide to find it the first time. The location of the Riad is down a dark and narrow alley off the main road which makes for a quiet area but could present other problems.

We stayed in the Orange room which had a comfortable bed and was a good size for two. However the bathroom would get a little smelly after showering (maybe drains or unsuitable tiling?). Although there was no safe the room was individually locked (padlocks could be a little more substantial and the lock fittings properly attached) and the front door to the Riad was closed at all times. Having said that we often found other guest room doors open as well as ours after cleaning, potentially compromising privacy.

Overall a small, affordable, nicely laid out riad which offers easy access to the Jemaa, Kasbah and lots of other locations in the Medina . If the drain issues are sorted we would definitely return to Dar Maia on another trip to Marrakech.

“Okay but could be better if no bad smell and noisy airco.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2011

Its cheap and near the Djem el Fna so thats a big plus.

The only 3 things that were negative are:

1. The smell from the bathroomstones, they are normal bricks on the floor that stink (smell bad) when wet (24h a day when you shower every day), can't believe they dindn't put normal bathroom tiles in there. ( WHITE ROOM )

2. Airco / heating from other guests make allot of noise, like living in a fridge, with the windows closed it's bareable but when it smells in your room (1.) you want your window open.

3. Towels didn't get refreshed for 3 or 5 days, not sure exactly but not often.

The rest was fine, our host, Iman (woman) was very kind and helpfull.

Maybe we go again when they put normal bathroom tiles in the bathroom and maybe a door instead of a curtain fpr the toilet (WC), they dont advertise there weak points ofcourse but having a to go to the toilet with only a plastic curtain between you and your company doesn't make your trip special, well it does but not in a positive way.

“Excellent Riad and great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2011

After an 8 hour train journey from Fes ,we were welcomed by Aziz who was very friendly and helpful ,and showed us to our room after a brief chat and a mint tea.We were also given a map of the city . We stayed in the white room on the top floor . The riad itself is about 4 mins walk from the main square and there are plenty of shops and places to eat near by.There is also some good Hammans (steam room /massage etc) nearby. One word EXCELLENT

“A little gem of a riad”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2010

We stayed in the emerald room on the ground floor for a week and loved every moment. Coming out of your room into the lovely enclosed space with sky above brought you into regular contact with the riad staff Aziz,Iman and Nordine ( hope I have spelt that correctly) all of whom were incredibly open, friendly and helpful ( they can help you with trip ideas and transport) . In fact this contact added an extra dimension to our visit- Marrakech can be quite demanding as most conversations entail negotiating!!- so to be able to have normal conversations with such friendly staff was very refreshing. The location is superb, you will not get lost finding your way back , and is only short walk from Jemaa el Fna and the souks. There is a roof terrace which is perfect for unwinding after a busy day. To enjoy the magnificent frenzy that is Marrakech a riad where you can really chill out is a must and this one ticks all the boxes. The rooms upstairs may offer a bit more privacy but for us the emarald room was perfect.
