“It could be a much better place if some changes were made”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2009

Been there with my husband and found some things that made not enjoy fully the beautty of the place - because it is indeed a very charming place, but it's not well maintained, our room was quite small and poorly furnished for the price we payed - the bathroom was huge, but in room my husband could touch the walls laying in bed with both hands and feet. And another thing not so charming was to find the room wasn't to clean - we found pieces of a yogurt top by the window, and the linens in bed could been better.
It's our third time in Morocco and we have been in places not so charming but much better taken care of. I only would recommend this place to a friend for its location, and architectural featuring, and would strongly recommend that he wouldn't choose the room in the ground floor.

“Authentic and Calm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2009

I can't really fault this Riad. The staff are friendly, charming and sometimes eccentric; rooms are clean, down-to-earth, but simultaneously detailed and comfortable. The terrace, balconies and courtyard are designed for relaxation and the craftsmanship is impressive.

The riad is central enough to be convenient (once you have made a few trips and know your way!) but also tucked away through a series of narrow, almost underground passages.

I would definitely recommend a taxi (booked through the riad, 100 dirham) as you'll never find it otherwise. Be prepared - the taxi drive is an experience in itself!

I'd go back without issue and have recommended it to my parents.

“a tranquil haven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2009

This small and secluded riad lived up to all the reviews. I was travelling with a female friend so we were given the twin room on the ground floor, the room itself was small but it came complete with its own courtyard, set out for lounging when the weather permitted, and a huge bathroom. The riad was cleanly decorated to accomodate european tastes, but still had all the touches of traditional morrocan riad and our hosts were very friendly and helpful, though I would suggest brushing up on your French as this is sometimes better understood than English. Breakfast on the roof is a lovely experience and the mint tea is delicious! I would definitely stay here again if I go back to Marrakech.

“Very Cool, but tricky to find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2008

We stayed at this place for one night in October. We found the staff very accomadating and friendly and the riad was very beautiful.
The only advice I would suggest is that you get someone who knows where it is to lead you because it was quite tricky and we got lost many times. It was about 10 minutes from the place however it could take waaaaaay longer if you didn't know where you were going (which we didn't most of the time).
This riad was more traditional than others we stayed at. For this reason we appreciated it all the more.
The best part was waking up in the morning for the calls to prayer because it is so close to the Ben Youssef mosque.

“magic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 February 2008

After doing quite a bit of research on riads in Marrakesh (and being on a bit of a budget) I chose Tamkast due to all the great reviews.

After an "exhilarating" taxi from the airport with an understanding of why no cars there have wing mirrors we arrived at what looked like a donkey depot! Being led through dusty dark alleyways and thinking what I had got myself into we arrived at a small door.

This opened to another universe! We were greeted warmly and shown around this beautiful riad. It had been immaculately kept, cleaned and presented. The roof terrace was wonderful and our room was delightful. The silence inside the riad was amazing, despite the pandemonium going on outside!

We were the only guests in the riad at the time so had the run of the place to ourselves. We were left in peace but hunting out one of the staff was never an issue and they could not do enough for you.

Breakfast (on the terrace) was super and mint tea upon your return from exploring was always available.

The riad is a little out the way and maps are next to useless here, so I may have found it difficult to find my way home had I not been with someone with excellent navigational skills but getting lost here is half the fun. It is away from the touristy parts (another bonus) and getting back late you do seem to be the only visitors around but I generally felt safe and had no issues.

Tamkast - one of my top places!

  • Liked — Tranquility and style of the riad
  • Disliked — Nothing
