“Beautiful Riad”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2010

Mostapha and Latifa were incredibly helpful and did everything to make us welcome and comfortable. The Riad itself is absolutely beautiful. Although it is a bit of a distance, it is perfectly possible to walk to the main square - we did it every day (sometimes twice a day) with two children and had great fun taking in all the sights. Getting lost does seem to be inevitable (although the big cobble/ small cobble tip is a good one - basically small cobbles seem to lead to private residences), and it's true that the locals are extremely eager to help you for a price. However, at no stage did any of us feel unsafe - quite the opposite - people were incredibly kind and hospitable and made a real fuss of our kids. I would definitely recommend learning a few words of Arabic if you don't know any. We just about managed 'hello', 'thank you' and 'god willing' but it seemed to go a long way.

“Great staff, poor maintenance and comfort.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 March 2010

Directed in a quiet area not to close to the center but it's a nice walk to know the Medina. Latifa and Mustafa are wonderfull hosts and the home made cooking of Latifa is worth a stay. Great view on the city and the Atlas mountains from the roof-terrace.
The maintenance however is poor. I have the feeling that the (French) owner, who is not staying here himself is only interested in the money. This Riad could be much more comfortable if something is done about the maintenance and comfort. Is had lots of possibilities. Now its not enough value for money.

“Off the beaten track...a bit too far off.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2010

My wife and I stayed at the Riad in the sweltering heat of July 2009. The mercury touched 45 degrees and with no air conditioning in our bedrooms and only an old, dusty and incredibly noisy fan offered by the Riad staff, our two nights at this place constituted some of the most hallucinogenic and fitful sleep we've ever had.

To say this place is 'off the beaten track' is an understatement. We got seriously lost finding it, were coralled by about 10 Marrakchi blokes and then kindly relieved of about £10 for the pleasure of being guided to the Riad. A great start. It's not close to the Djemaa, so in the evenings we had to find our way out of the media through the 'Bweebet Yaeeeadi' (as they pronounce it), hop in a cab, pray we didn't crash and make our way dow to the action of 'la place'.

Granted, the rooms were quite nicely decorated, but there were no locks on the doors, no air conditioning and the location wasn't great. Mostafa booked us a cab to take us to Essaouira that ended up being a total rip-off too (nearly double the price it should have been, despite him saying it was really good value). His mixture of grovelling, hand-wringing and bowing/scraping was nearly too much to bear. A little crawling if the truth be told.

Unsurprisingly the whole 'oh no, you can't pay by credit card, our machine has just broken' was used by the aforementioned chap, meaning a schlep around various cash machines (most of which didn't work) in order to find the cash on the day we left. Call me a cynic, but when you get the same response multiple times in different establishments you start to doubt their truthfulness.

All in all, not a great stay.

“Fantastic!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2009

After a bit of a rocky start getting to the riad Mustafa and his sister were fantastic and went out of their way to help us get the best out of our stay. We stayed for two days and were upgraded to a bigger room for both. Mustafa drew us maps (which were brilliant) on both days, firstly to get outside of the medina (he also advised on taxi costs etc!) and to the Majorelle gardens and then how to get through the medina so that we could visit the museums in the middle. The rooms were lovely, as was the roof top where we sat for sunsets and both were very peaceful after the hustle and bustle of the medina. There is nothing more that they could have done to help with Mustafa even accompanying us to the nearby gate to get a taxi to the airport when we left. I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to all! My only advice is that Mustafa told us to call him before arriving so that he can tell you which gate to get dropped off at to avoid being taken to a further one and having to pay for a guide.

“Fantastic service but very over priced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2009

We stayed here for one night on 30 November. Mustapha who runs the Riad was excellent and really the saving garace of the place. The owner needs to realise, and appreciate, that without Mustapaha we would have been very disgruntled guests.

We stayed in the Amber Suite -not exactly a suite, just one room with a sitting area to one end and large fire place. There was no lock on the door. There was no shower - just a large walled area with a tap in it - not even a bucket to help wash. Not that we could do that as there was no hot water the morning we left.

The main attraction for the room was that we could have a fire as the night was extremely cold. Mustapha at first resisted explaining the smoke would go everywhere but we persisted. And he was right! The fire place is so poorly designed that when a fire is lit smoke bellows out in to the room meaning you can hardly see or breathe - but preferable to being freezing.

The finish in the room and bathroom was poor with tiles off the wall.

It is a good half an hour walk to the main square and the best route is to go out of the medina and walk along a dual carriageway, re-entering the medina at the square. Not exactly pleasant.

The breakfast was delicious and plenty of it - yoghurt, egg, bread, coffee etc. Mustapha also arranged for a taxit to take us to the airport and was, as I say , always extremely helpful. It was is a real shame he has to work with such a shambles.

We paid 90 euros for the night through the website www.riadsmorrocco.com - other guests may have got a better rate booking direct. But for us this was vastly overpriced considering the location and poor quality of the room. I think a fairer price would be 50 euros and I rpobably wouldn't feel so negative about it then!
