“Lack of warmth but nice place to stay”

I stayed at La Villa des Palmiers two weeks ago. I had been to Marrakech a couple of time before so I chose to stay at la Palmeraie rather than at the Medina (town centre). Even if I knew that the Palmeraie was not close to the Medina, the Villa des Palmiers is really far away from the Place Jeema el Fna (more than 30 minutes by taxi), and just a little bit closer to the Hivernage District (20 - 25 minutes) where are located most of the nice "fusion" restaurants." The taxi costs between 30 US$ (day) and 40 US$ (night) for the round trip drive to the Medina. So, if you want to visit the city, don’t stay at the Villa des Plamiers!
The staff is helpful but the owners are not very welcoming. They seem to be in the Villa just for giving you the invoice and charging your credit card. The garden is nice, with a huge pool. Our room “Sabal” was really lovely, with a fireplace and a huge terrace at the 1st floor with a view over the Garden and the Atlas Mountains. Last but not least, if you want to lunch at the Villa, you have to order it the day before, and for the dinner, you have to order it at the beginning of the day, so you will probably choose to eat outside…

“GREAT VALUE!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2006

I went to Marrakech for the first time for four nights at the end of October with my girlfriend. I was looking for somewhere with a pool and was not bothered about staying in a Riad in the hustle and bustle of town and was put off by the €400 something price tags..

The previous post rightly points out that the Villa is hard to find. With this helpful hint, I emailed ahead and Severine immediately offered a free arrival transfer.

So two points on this; first the Villa is out of town - its an uncomfortable 15min ride at €15 one way and overall not ideal, BUT you get a completely tranquil setting with a huge pool at what feels like your own private villa given there are only c6 bedrooms. I am a fussy traveller but I felt the inconvenience of the location was more than made up for by the serenity and lets not forget the most important factor - we paid €120 per night which I thought was FANTASTIC value.
Second, Severine is very charming. She does not however volunteer much help and is very much the owner in residence as opposed to the hotel manageress. But if you press her, she will volunteer suggestions although she voices most of her recommendations in the print out welcome pack.

Other points - as mentioned before the staff esp Said are excellent. Also they have a roster of taxi drivers who you can essentially retain for the day and esp with Rachid you could set your watch by him.

OVERALL very satisfied and the value for money aspect pushes me up to five stars. The only other negative I might add is that the bed was slightly too hard for my tastes.

“Disappointing”

The palmery where the villa is set is incredibly hard to find. Therefore it is definitely advisable to ring ahead and ask the villa to give you some telephone numbers of taxi's that know its location. We were unfortunate enough to get a taxi driver who had no idea where he was and consequently got incredibly annoyed when we would not pay him extra money for the jouney which was already way over the odds.
The villa itself is stunning in lovely gardens but this does come at a price. On arrival we felt as though we were almost intruding - no one welcomed us and we were told to sit in the lounge until the room was ready - this was 4pm. An hour later we were taken to our room, but in all this time no one came to say hello which made us both feel awkward. We thought at dinner that evening our host would surely turn up and greet us but the only time we met her was when being asked to pay the bill.
I found the recommendation in Alistair Sawdays Moroccan guide book and I must admit that I completley disagree with his claims of Severine being a refined, relaxed hostess. The only time I met her was during our last meal at the villa - she came up to our table mid-way though our starter and asked if one of us could come out to the office to pay for our stay. She didn't even ask us if we were having a nice time, enjoyed our stay - nothing. My family run a hotel in London and if we treated our guests like this I am sure they would be appaled. I was looking forward to a friendly inviting atmosphere and to get a few tips off our hosts of local restaurants etc instead quite the opposite happens.
Despite the poor hosting the staff - especially Saide were lovely. The room was lovely and big with views over the garden and I can imagine the pool will be gorgeous in the summer months ahead.

“Wonderful relaxing retreat”

The Villa Des Palmiers is set in a tranquil rural position about 20-30 minutes taxi drive from the centre of Marrakech (about £10 each way)and a million miles away from the hustle, bustle and noise of the town. The only noise present during our stay was birdsong and as there are only 6 suites in the villa for much of the time you are likely to have the whole place to yourself. The Villa is beautifully furnished and the food and drink was excellent (and of substantial portions!)- we only stayed for 3 days but only chose to eat out once during that time when we decided to explore the town. Our every need was discretely attended to by the charming and attentive staff who made us feel very much at home (if only we lived in such a lovely home!).
All in all it was an ideal stay for a romantic winter break and I am sure we will be staying there again soon. Many thanks to Bernard and Severine for their great hospitality.

“great place to stay”

I've been to a lot of great places, to a lot of great hotels (one and only resorts, hiltons, meridiens, etc...).

But what I found at La Villa des Palmiers was quiet different, something you can't find anywhere else :
A great and beautiful place with a very professional approach, but also so human and "classfull".

Details of the house are beautiful, the food is excellent, the owners, Severine and Bernard, are so nice and made my stay in Marrakech a delightful moment.

Thanks to them, I discovered Marrakech as I had never seen it.

As a conclusion : La villa des Palmiers : The place to go, the place to stay, the place to be.
