“Very authentic oasis of peace in the very centre of the city”

We stayed here over new year in Dec 08/Jan 09 for 5 nights. The hotel is very good, exceeding pretty and authentic and felt like a real piece of Marrakech. It is right in the centre of town and a very quick walk to the main square. It is accessed down a very narrow, dark side road, which some who have not travelled to North Africa before may find a little intimidating and it is probably not suitable for female travellers on their own. However, having said that, we felt it was fine for us (a young couple) and I've walked down scarier roads in London. The staff at the riad were very welcoming (as was the riad cat) and the breakfast simple but adequate. We had an inside room (no external window) which worked well for us as the local children could sometimes be noisy outside. The attention to detail in the rooms is wonderful. The weather was warm for December and we ate outside quite often. The markets are a definite to visit and great fun to banter for all types of goods. The horse drawn carriages in the city are a great way to see the town; we used them rather than taxis as they were usually cheaper and a great way to see everything.

“Was looking forward to coming back”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

I stayed at this Riad in 2005 with a group of friends and was looking forward to returning with my Husband and parents. I was looking forward to spending some more time in Marrakech too.
The Riad arranged a taxi for us form the airport and it was lovely to be met by the smiling driver, however unfortunately it was not a grand taxi as we requested, and as we were a group of 4 we had to pay for two small taxis.
On our arrival at the riad we were told there was a problem with our rooms and so they had arranged for us to go to the Riad next door. Which was ok if not so luxurious as the Riad dar Mimouna. We spent the first two nights of our 4 night break at the alternative riad and then moved to the one we had booked.
It was lovely to be in the more luxurious surroundings but the rooms we had were a lot noisier than the riad we had started in.
The service was good and we were given a complimentary dinner on our last night which was delicious, I would recommend eating at the riad. The dinner is served on the terrace and was absolutely lovely.
I also had a massage which was lovely and very reasonably priced.

“Oasis of peace with wonderful service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2010

I have just returned from a four-night visit to Marrakech with my (adult) son booked through Expedia. We stayed at the Riad Dar Mimouna and I felt compelled to say how much we enjoyed the experience. As others have commented, the guest house is a short walk through a residential enclave with two or three small kiosk-type shops and a mosque just off a bustling street leading to the hospital and bordered by the high pink walls of a royal palace. It is entirely non-threatening but would be difficult to locate by the independent traveller. The recommended way to arrive is by taxi from the airport arranged in advance by the riad and we were efficiently met by the friendly driver who accompanied us for the last hundred yards or so on foot to the front door.

Once inside, the riad presents an oasis of quiet calm, ornately decorated yet at once welcoming and homely. Having read the reviews and seen the riad's own web set, it turned out to be even better than I expected. Our room on the first floor was quite small and simply furnished but spotlessly clean and perfectly satisfactory, including the en-suite, accessed through narrow, saloon-type doors, with plenty of hot water when required. The low twin divan beds looked fairly new.

Breakfast on the delightful roof terrace is certainly simple as others have pointed out but I think appropriate for the type of accommodation. However, perhaps the most outstanding feature of the Mimouna is the friendliness and attentiveness of the charming staff. Nothing is too much trouble, every approach being greeted by a smile, and the indefatigable Omar seems always to be on hand to assist and answer questions.

All the main attractions of the Medina can be conveniently explored from here, including the souks and kasbah, and the vibrant main square of Djemaa el Fna is about a 15-minute walk away - though crossing some of the roads can be a bit intimidating (tip: take your cue from the local pedestrians who have developed the knack of gliding through the constant flow of traffic!)

The new modern and cosmopolitan city, is walkable but really quite a hike and perhaps best reached by using one of the reasonably-priced "petit taxis".

We found that staying within the Medina was the ideal way to soak up the unique atmosphere of old Marrakech and staying at the Riad Dar Mimouna served to deepen the experienced. Highly recommended.

“An absolute pleasure and delight to stay here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

This is the first time I've reviewed a hotel but i felt I should because staying here was an absolute pleasure. Riad was exactly as pictured in photographs - sometimes you wonder if hotels have just tidied up and and cleaned for the photos and the rest of the time its a mess - but this wasn't the case with this hotel. The entire hotel - terrace, rooms, ensuites, courtyard - was extremely clean, tidy and beautiful. This was the first place my boyfriend and I have been to Morocco and experienced a Riad Hotel. Riad is situated within the old walled city (The Medina). I have read another review that said the hotel was situated down a questionable street but this is the way the Medina looks. By Western standards the streets look run-down and delapidated, but the whole of Morocco looks this way!! The street is not questionable in a way that it's unsafe. When you enter the Riad, it is in stark contrast to the appearance of the street outside. You walk into a picture of beauty and tranquility. The courtyard is beautiful - amazing decorated, a fountain in the middle with sparrows stopping by for a sip of water, tables and chairs to sit and have a quite read. When we arrived, early for check in, we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who let us leave our cases by reception and showed us up to the roof terrace. Again, terrace was beautiful, immaculate and peaceful. We sat down and were served with complimentary traditional mint tea and a selection of pastries/biscuits. The receptionist then arrived at out table with a printed map of the area - a pleasant surprise as we didnt ask for it - and took the time to sit down and explain to us (in very good english) where we were, where the local points of interests were located and advice on the best ways to get there and back. We enjoyed our tea, soaking up the atmosphere and were then told our room was ready (early) and we were welcome to go in. Room was as pictured - clean, well presented, cosy and comfortable. Simple in that there were no hotel freebies etc, but that is reflected in the price. Bathroom was clean, all fitting and fixtures as they should be, good shower, toliet and sink. Clean bedding, 2 clean towels in the bathroom, soap, two glasses and a bottle of mineral water. Very happy with the room. Service - was impeccable. This is the main reason why I choose to write a review. Staff were friendly, very helpful, recommended fantastic restaurants if we asked or directed us to the restaurant of our own choice. Ordered taxis for us at a reasonable price, on time. I remember one slightly grumpy looking staff member but she works behind the scenes in the kitchen etc, so doesnt do the face-to-face service. Everyone else bent over backwards to be helpful. Guests were mostly english/french/european. all guests encoutered were pleasant and friendly. Food - breakfast was delightful - traditional, always fresh and delicious. We were given a mint tea, croissants/other pastries, traditional "spounge cake bread", (is the only way i can describe it), fresh bread and preserves, fruit and/or delicious yogurt, and a choice of english tea or black/white coffee.
The only possible negative for some people staying here may be the noise from the medina streets. You can hear people living until around 11pm - kids playing, people talking etc and you can also hear the call-to-prayer from the mosque once/twice in the evening. We did also hear it one morning at 5pm. However, this is the same where-ever you stay in the medina. I would recommend that everyone stays in the medina at some point in their trip, otherwise you have not experienced a a real Moroccan city.
I was so pleased with my experience at this Riad - traditional, clean, absolutely beautiful. There first time I have left a hotel with the overwhelming urge to write a review and congratulate the staff on such a wonderfully run place.
Also - have a traditional "Hammam" (steam room) that guests may use free of charge. You just need to book a couple of hours in advance so they can clean and prepare it for you :)
PS - noticed most of the bad reviews for this place are a few years ago - this is a different hotel compared to the one described in 2007 :)

“Beautiful would recommend to everyone!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

This is a lovely place to stay full of character with friendly helpful staff.

When we reached the hotel I was really impressed with the decoration inside the Riad, its was even better than I expected. Yes the hotel is down a passage as reported in other reviews, however rather than being issues this added to the experience and charm of the Riad. It is situated in a residential area so there is children in the street and mopeds (like every single street in Marrakech!) but we never had any problem, we did get a high five off some kids! The street the Riad is on has some little shops which are handy for v cheap snacks. Just in case you get lost ask the taxi driver to take you to the hotel, we booked our taxi from the taxi by ringing the Riad from England.

The room we had was upstairs at the front of the Riad. It had lovely traditional double doors and windows which opened up in the central area and other windows to the street. The room was very very clean and had lots of original features. The bedding was very comfortable and the bathroom also beautiful. The aircon could have been more powerful however it’s a very very old building so that is to be expected, however it did keep the room cool with opening the internal windows.

Even though were at the front of the hotel we did here street noise, but it did not stop us from sleeping like some other reviews have reported. I really liked hearing the call to pray also.

Breakfast was simple but very enjoyable on the roof and was always served by one of the very friendly staff but recommended places to eat and things to do. The roof was also great for sun bathing and benefited from a very nice hamman. If you get the chance use it!

The location in the Medina district is close to the main Souks and Central square (10min walk) its also very close to the spice Souk and lots of other attractions.

Great place to stay and hope you enjoy it too! It is certainly good value for money.

I forgot to say the free WIFI was fast and easy to gain access to.
