I had read such poor reviews on this hotel after booking it I was a little unsure what to expect. 3 friends & I booked to stay here for 4 nights at the end of September - we wanted a clean base to explore the city - we werent looking for anything grand, just somewhere to sleep and have a shower as we had something planned everyday we were there. We got this!
Overall the hotel could do with a refresh, but it was kept very clean, staff were all very polite and helpful. The rooms were more 3* UK standard. But there was always someone cleaning the hand rails/floors.
Reception / Room Service - on arrival and during our stay the staff were cahtty, attentive and helpful - always able to offer advise/info on any questions. Changed cash for us when we needed it. We could get our safe to work - they sent the maintenance guy within 5 minutes - he fixed it. We rang for coffeee in our room - 10 mins we had it.
Rooms - We had 2 adjoingin twin rooms, had tv [wtih english news channels], hairdryer, safe, 2 seats/table, over abth shower, toilet & bidet in bathroom. Rooms cleaned/towels changed daily. No tea & coffee making facilities. we didnt have a fridge - but our friends did - we didnt ask for one and used theres for our water! Air-conditioning seemed to work better the higher the degree setting - it was very hot - we never complained about it as we only slept there but getting ready was a hot affair in the evening, on the last night it seemed to have cooled down - so maybe it was broken?!!
Bar - used by ex-pats, locals and people form other hotels, bar itself was very dark [its call the chesterfield & referred to as the english gentlemans pub!] with tv - usually with football on. but outside by the [small] pool chairs/tables which was nice in an evening and got quite busy with the visitors from elsewhere at certain times of the evening. drinks were 25 MAD for a small beer [half to us brits] about £2 - double for a pint! wine about £10 per bottle. water about £1 [large bottle] - so pretty standard city prices. staff were great in the bar.
Pool - SMALL - riad size dipping pool rather than for swimming!!
Restaurant - not used much, dated decor, breakfast was 2 cereals, pancakes, variety of rolls, pastried, croissants, 2 jams, marmalade, butter, orang joice was freshly squeezed [but pretty tastleess as were all the oranges I ate in marrakech so it wasnt just a Nassim thing!] various dried fruit, oranges [again no taste] boiled eggs, tomato and cucumber. Coffee was awful ....... we paid for cafe au laits [20 MAD] instead which was far nicer. tea was liptons. There is an al a carte menu for lunch & dinner but if you have full or half board it is a menu or 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 deserts - 2 seperate menus for lunch and dinner. You can swap your dinner for lunch if on half board. We did try the restaurant - food was ok, nothing you write home about and althrough the service was very good and the staff trying to please once you have had one creme caramel [or flan as its called], or orange salad [sliced orange and cinnamon] then it isnt a taste bud excitor - as with most of the food I tried in marrakesh - pretty bland. The food was just ok - for how cheap it was and you cant go rwrong with a tomatoe & tuna salad ....... but you can eat cheapily in most places. i would commend the staff though for there enthusiasm to serve us and make us welcome and attend to our every request [for more wine!]
Staff - Polite, frendly, helpful
Location - in the newer part of the city - 20 mins walk to the souks or a cab ride for about 20MAD [£1.80] took 5 mins. not much of a view on tot he main street - but then I wasnt planning on sending my time in my room!
Things to note: They didnt have a lot of cash to change - so change a littel more at the airpot.
As with all my reviews - you do really do get what you pay for. I have stayed in som ebesutiful hotels and there are some fab hotels in Marrakesh . if youw ant to pay for them. Between 2 people we paid about £60 per night [so £30 pp] for half board [it was about £10 for 2 per night mroe for half board so we thought we would give it a whirl and if no good then no major loss]. I would say you have to equate it to what you'd get at home for that price .......................... then you sort of get the picture. I didnt think for £30 a night it was too bad, it was a base ............... to explore from and nothign more. We went to a fab 5* hotel before our cooking lesson - WOW it was beautiful but it was 6 times as much as we paid per night ............ so think UK 3* clean and friendly and you will know if its for you.
