*warning long Review -*
This was my first visit to Morocco and initially we booked a Riad (which I will review later) in the old town. Needless to say, after one night we walked in off the streets and checked into the Nassim. The hotel was relatively quite (off-peak season I guess) so managed to bag a Suite - Room 314 - for a reasonable 60GBP per night. To be honest, I just wanted SPACE and a power shower. It was also a relief to know that the bath, was a bath and not just a shower made to look like a bath if you get what I mean. My toddler refuses showers so hence the need for a bath.
Check-in was smooth and effortless. Staff was very helpful and approachable so I am a little baffled by the negative comments that other fellow travellers have left...they organised a trip to Essoria for 450DHS per person in a lovely minibus and a prudent driver.
Room 314 was in a very satisfactory standard overlooking the Pub and pool. Some visible wear and tear but nothing seriously worth mentioning (save that the Bed throws could do with a dry clean or something as they were stained). Very spacious, 2 TV’s - only Arabic/French channels though - no DVD player, large Safe, Mini Bar was empty but this was fine because it meant we could stock our own drinks adequately! Windows could be opened which provided a lovely breeze during the hot day. Some music noise in the evening from the pub but nothing really unpleasant - if anything the choice of music was acceptable. Close the windows and it's virtually gone anyway. No bottled water provided.
Room service was excellent and Suite was made-up quickly and efficiently. Fresh sheets and plenty of towels (no face cloths though) and generally very clean. Certainly no signs of any critters or creepy-crawlies that other people have mentioned.
Breakfast. Erm. Well it's repetitive. Other reviewers have already summed this up. It hasn't changed. Same Pastries and cereal and hard boiled eggs.
Location. Excellent. We could walk it to the Souk in 25 mins with a pushchair in tow. Yes the roads and crossings are hazardous; huge pavement drops didn't exactly suit a buggy but you know what - didn't see that many fatalities or accidents. I think generally the Moroccans’ have some sort of system in place which only they know!. Don't be put off. So long as you are alert and have eyes in the back of your head you will be fine. On occasion used a taxi - cost was between 30DHS and 40DHS. I don't like this bartering for taxis. "Please Mr Taxi man just tell me the price, I would not like to make you an offer!"
There is a very large ASDA-type supermarket about 10 mins walk away. 'Acima' is situated opposite the petrol station. Come out of the hotel, turn left. Then left again at the main traffic lights. Very cheap for essentials and they stock all main brands. We used for light lunch's + snacks (cheese, meat slices, chocolates and drinks). In the opposite direction there is a 'Carrefour' supermarket. Again it's massive.
There is also a large shopping Mall about 25 mins away - I forget the name. Here again they had large supermarket and lots of western shops and great places to eat.
Souks. Well. It was an experience. Soon became numb to all banter and hard-up stories. Remember. These people have their OWN business with stock piled high and goods merchandise bought wholesale at cost price. There's reason NOT to feel too sorry for them. My advice is LOOK - but don't fall in love with anything. If you have to ask for the price be prepared for a random price. Make a offer of what you would be prepared to pay or simply walk away. Chances are it will still be available when you get back or the bloke 2 shops away will have the same thing anyway.
Shopping in Essouria is completely different. All the same articles as per the souks at a far more reasonable price; no hard sales and generally a more pleasant shopping experience. Also lots of genuine antiques from the old Riads and colonial days. Go - take your credit card - you won't be disappointed or feel cheated! Beautiful seafood coupled by gorgeous scenery. The beach wasn't wow - so don't just go for the lure of a bit of beach. Water was a bit like the River Thames....
That's it. Oh, I more thing. Don't worry about booking a cab through the Hotel on the way back - 150DHS. Hail one from the streets (the old Mercedes ones have large boots for luggage) for about 60DHS. Airport in 20 mins away.
Also there is a wonderful shop selling the (usual) souk stuff across the road from the Hotel. Yusuf is great to deal with and his prices are good.
TIP: for Moroccan Government. Ban the scooters & cars from the Square!! What's that all about?? How can tourists shop and spend money casually if they are fearful of being run over or worse killed?
Summary: 4/5.
Minus 1
1. for No AC in rooms (or at least it wasnt working) so check it is before you book
2. Bland Breakfast...
3. Swimming pool & Sauna "out of order" hmmmm.
TIPS: Best £ exchange rate obtained via cashpoints NOT at airport. You will need a pen to fill in some form before passport control so have one to hand.
Take a portable mini DVD player and Scart lead to entertain toddlers in Hotel room.
Fly BMi who have a healthy 30kg Luggage allowance. You will be surprised how heavy lamps and plates etc.. etc.. are!
