“Rest haven and some luxury away from Souks!”

*warning long Review -*

This was my first visit to Morocco and initially we booked a Riad (which I will review later) in the old town. Needless to say, after one night we walked in off the streets and checked into the Nassim. The hotel was relatively quite (off-peak season I guess) so managed to bag a Suite - Room 314 - for a reasonable 60GBP per night. To be honest, I just wanted SPACE and a power shower. It was also a relief to know that the bath, was a bath and not just a shower made to look like a bath if you get what I mean. My toddler refuses showers so hence the need for a bath.

Check-in was smooth and effortless. Staff was very helpful and approachable so I am a little baffled by the negative comments that other fellow travellers have left...they organised a trip to Essoria for 450DHS per person in a lovely minibus and a prudent driver.

Room 314 was in a very satisfactory standard overlooking the Pub and pool. Some visible wear and tear but nothing seriously worth mentioning (save that the Bed throws could do with a dry clean or something as they were stained). Very spacious, 2 TV’s - only Arabic/French channels though - no DVD player, large Safe, Mini Bar was empty but this was fine because it meant we could stock our own drinks adequately! Windows could be opened which provided a lovely breeze during the hot day. Some music noise in the evening from the pub but nothing really unpleasant - if anything the choice of music was acceptable. Close the windows and it's virtually gone anyway. No bottled water provided.

Room service was excellent and Suite was made-up quickly and efficiently. Fresh sheets and plenty of towels (no face cloths though) and generally very clean. Certainly no signs of any critters or creepy-crawlies that other people have mentioned.

Breakfast. Erm. Well it's repetitive. Other reviewers have already summed this up. It hasn't changed. Same Pastries and cereal and hard boiled eggs.

Location. Excellent. We could walk it to the Souk in 25 mins with a pushchair in tow. Yes the roads and crossings are hazardous; huge pavement drops didn't exactly suit a buggy but you know what - didn't see that many fatalities or accidents. I think generally the Moroccans’ have some sort of system in place which only they know!. Don't be put off. So long as you are alert and have eyes in the back of your head you will be fine. On occasion used a taxi - cost was between 30DHS and 40DHS. I don't like this bartering for taxis. "Please Mr Taxi man just tell me the price, I would not like to make you an offer!"

There is a very large ASDA-type supermarket about 10 mins walk away. 'Acima' is situated opposite the petrol station. Come out of the hotel, turn left. Then left again at the main traffic lights. Very cheap for essentials and they stock all main brands. We used for light lunch's + snacks (cheese, meat slices, chocolates and drinks). In the opposite direction there is a 'Carrefour' supermarket. Again it's massive.

There is also a large shopping Mall about 25 mins away - I forget the name. Here again they had large supermarket and lots of western shops and great places to eat.

Souks. Well. It was an experience. Soon became numb to all banter and hard-up stories. Remember. These people have their OWN business with stock piled high and goods merchandise bought wholesale at cost price. There's reason NOT to feel too sorry for them. My advice is LOOK - but don't fall in love with anything. If you have to ask for the price be prepared for a random price. Make a offer of what you would be prepared to pay or simply walk away. Chances are it will still be available when you get back or the bloke 2 shops away will have the same thing anyway.

Shopping in Essouria is completely different. All the same articles as per the souks at a far more reasonable price; no hard sales and generally a more pleasant shopping experience. Also lots of genuine antiques from the old Riads and colonial days. Go - take your credit card - you won't be disappointed or feel cheated! Beautiful seafood coupled by gorgeous scenery. The beach wasn't wow - so don't just go for the lure of a bit of beach. Water was a bit like the River Thames....

That's it. Oh, I more thing. Don't worry about booking a cab through the Hotel on the way back - 150DHS. Hail one from the streets (the old Mercedes ones have large boots for luggage) for about 60DHS. Airport in 20 mins away.

Also there is a wonderful shop selling the (usual) souk stuff across the road from the Hotel. Yusuf is great to deal with and his prices are good.

TIP: for Moroccan Government. Ban the scooters & cars from the Square!! What's that all about?? How can tourists shop and spend money casually if they are fearful of being run over or worse killed?

Summary: 4/5.

Minus 1
1. for No AC in rooms (or at least it wasnt working) so check it is before you book
2. Bland Breakfast...
3. Swimming pool & Sauna "out of order" hmmmm.

TIPS: Best £ exchange rate obtained via cashpoints NOT at airport. You will need a pen to fill in some form before passport control so have one to hand.
Take a portable mini DVD player and Scart lead to entertain toddlers in Hotel room.

Fly BMi who have a healthy 30kg Luggage allowance. You will be surprised how heavy lamps and plates etc.. etc.. are!

Room Tip: Stay on 3rd or middle floors. The lift is tiny and slow.

“Staying in the New Town was a nice opportunity to escape from the madness!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights at the beginning of June. At first, we were a little unsure about not staying in the Medina as all our Morocco books said this was where we needed to be, but I am SO pleased we stayed in the New Town. The Medina is amazing, don't get me wrong, but it is constant madness and for us, it was nice to be able to escape for a couple of hours each night and morning. As two females in Morocco, we didn't attract any attention in the New Town and could sit outside and eat without being hassled, etc. Which was a nice relief! The hotel was only 30 mins walk from the main square though, and it was on the same road so it was just a straight walk down - nice and easy. The road was also the main road through Marrakech, so was always busy with people, and as such we always felt safe walking back to our hotel, even when it was late.

Anyway, onto the hotel - the whole hotel looked as if it had had lots of money spent on redecoration sometime in the early 90s, and hadn't been touched since. This isn't a bad thing though - It did look dated, but not in a shabby way - everything was spotlessly clean and in working order (that's everything I ask for on my budget!)

Our twin room was quite spacious, with a mini bar, TV, and large bathroom. It overlooked the bar but we never had any problem with noise at night - just what you'd expect staying in a city centre.

Breakfast was a little strange! It consisted of lots and lots of pastries, orange juice (which was amazing) and then some yoghurt. And then more pastries! But very filling and food was good - just missed having fruit, that's all.

Didn't use the pool as had no time, and to be honest, would have felt a bit exposed being in my bikini in Marrakech, despite being in the confines of a hotel. The bar was reasonably priced, and popular in the evening. It showed sports in the day, and seemed to mainly be full of ex-pats and Moroccans in their 20s.

Staff were really friendly and spoke English, and we took food to our room (and bottled water, more importantly!) no problem. Hotel also has free WiFi in the reception which was very fast, and the tourist bus was only 5 minutes walk away (a good way to get your bearings/escape walking in the heat) I think we were the only 'individual' travellers staying there - everyone else seemed to be in coach parties, mainly French or German, so I think it's a popular option with tour groups.

Obviously Marrakech has some amazingly luxurious hotels and this isn't one of them, but we were on a budget and this is definitely the nicest budget hotel I have ever stayed in! Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: We booked with Flightcentre and got a good deal.

“A great central place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

The exterior fronting out onto the busy main Mohammed V thoroughfare hides a little oasis of calm and tranquility. Reception area is compact and the staff very friendly and eager to help. Rooms, quite spacious (beds, coffee table, two lounge chairs, ample wardrobe space) are well decorated and functional. Bathrooms are also spacious and finished in polished stone. The lifts are a little on the small side with enough room for 3 people maximum. On the first floor you can find the 'English Pub' although the only thing really English about it is the football on the plasma TV. That said however, very friendly and three areas to choose from to sit and either watch the football or listen to the music. Drinks are very reasonable (plus draft beer on tap) and there is a small outdoor terrace and what I would call a small plunge pool, but still big and deep enough for a swim on a hot and hunmid day. There are too many restaurants and bars within minutes of walking to name. Whether you turn left or right out of the hotel there are also ample shops. The main square is a brisk thirty minute walk from the hotel going straight down the main avenue, although there are plenty of buses.

Room Tip: The corner or end rooms appeared to be the biggest

“Clean and comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2011 via mobile

Maybe it was because we rolled up to their door in the middle of the Marrakhesh rush hour, the Nassim appeared like an oasis in the middle of a storm. Maybe it was their friendly and welcoming attitude. Or just the great room and location. Whatever it was we hope your stay will be as good as ours.
