“Great hotel, shame about Marrakech”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012 via mobile

Hotel is spotlessly clean and very elegant with a nice lobby and lovely surroundings. The gardens are beautiful and the pools are very grand. There are lots of comfy sofas, hammocks and loungers and beautiful flowers and palm trees. There is one main pool which is unheated and therefore ice cold (nobody uses it). The other pool is heated but still too cold - the hotel needs to be less stingy and increase the pool heating.

Room was modern and clean but there are some issues:
1) It was freezing cold - heating did not work and they never fixed it even though we called 3 times
2) No separate shower cubicle in the bathroom and the water kept changing between hot and cold
3) No kettle or tea/coffee making facilities - unacceptable for a "5* hotel.

Room service was AWFUL! 450 dirhams for a lunch that arrived cold and was disgusting quality. Don't recommend!

Spa was good - it costs 250 dirhams per person for a 2 hour session including access to the hamam and they also bring you tea and dates which is a nice touch. 30 min massage was 500 dirham and was relaxing. Watch out though - was a bit disturbing to walk into the sauna to see a 20 stone French man slobbed out naked on the top bench.

Breakfast was weird - disgusting duck sausages and random mushrooms mixed with some disgusting yellow liquid. Lots of nice carbs such as muffins and donuts but the hot food was disappointing.

Service at the hotel was good, everyone said hello and was very helpful and pleasant.

SURVIVAL TIPS FOR MARRAKECH!
1) As soon as you step out the front of the hotel you will be POUNCED ON like fresh meat by tramps and rogue "tour guides" offering to show you the city. There is one particular scary man who has a fake ID and claims to be from the ministry of tourism. Take no notice and walk away from him! It is disgusting that the Sofitel let people like this loiter outside the hotel - other hotels have armed security guards who remove tramps and rogues from the front entrances. The Sofitel gate staff seemed happy to let these dodgy harassers remain.

2) Every street you walk along you will be approached by locals. EVERY ONE will claim they are from "your hotel" to try and make you feel safe in their company. They will be wearing suits and will try to offer a tour of the medina or atlas mountains (or better yet they will offer you DRUGS!). They are LIARS and must be avoided - ignore them and walk away with confidence.

3) The medina/main square is DISGUSTING and NOT for the light hearted! Monkeys get beaten up to perform for selfish tourists who want a photo - before settling in for some entertainment think about the torture these monkeys go through. Henna tattooists try to tattoo tourists even without their permission, just to get money. They will stalk you until you pay and can be very aggressive. I cannot understand how people eat here - there is ZERO hygiene and I saw one man with filthy hands cooking foods for tourists. People follow you everywhere if you stand out as a tourist, it's VERY disturbing.

“Stunning hotel,would recommend!”

We stayed at the sofitel for two nights on the 28th jan,the location is perfect, everything is within walking distance, when we arrived at the airport we got into a small yellow taxi outside which did not have a meter,it was a very shabby taxi and we were overcharged,it was our first time here so didnt have any idea how much it would cost but i did ask at the hotel reception when we arrived and we were charged probebly around £5 extra!the hotel itself is beautiful, very chic, our room was not ready so we went out to lunch down the road at extrablatt and took a walk to the square,we got back to the hotel about 3 hours later and we had to wait another 30 mins and when we got to our room it had twin beds so back to reception, given another room which we discovered was already occupied!!the guy who carried our bags ran back for another room,he was very appologetic anyway.Lovely room, large bathroom, king bed and little balcony overlooking a small garden with a pond, such a beautiful hotel you could not find fault, the pool area is amazing, the best hotel we have ever stayed in,the only thing that bothered me which has nothing to do with the hotel was that as soon as we walked out one of the guys at the gate tried to persued us to let him be our guide which i had already read about in my guide book,he didnt look too happy when we refused!everyone wants to be your guide and men would walk along side us and pretend that they worked at the sofitel, they must watch from a distance and follow you and they too would ask where your going and try to persuede you to go a certain cafe ect,it does get annoying,we would change direction and say were going somewhere else, then we got ripped off buy a guy selling dohnuts, straight away i said no thankyou, around 5 times lol, then he asked where we were from and held out a dohnut and said here gift for you, after trying to refuse,i took it,didnt want to but didnt want to offend,he said try it,i took a bite(he had also given a "gift" to my husband,as soon as i took a bite he rubbed his fingers together!!! so lesson learned,do not accept a gift as nothing is free here and they will want more money than what its worth!!! we ate at the night market on one of the stalls with all the locals,i was a little dubious at first but the food was amazing, little spicy sausages, big baps to mop up minced tomato, onion and herb sauce, mixed grilled kebabs and really cheap, cost us around £7 for the two of us and that was with mint tea too,now i dont drink english tea, coffee or herbal tea but the mint tea here is delicious, wish we had eaten on the stalls both nights!i loved the souks, they drive you crazy trying to get you to look at there stuff but just carry on walking, smile and say no thank you,we were followed in the souks, someone will say market this way, again everyone wants a piece of you,one guy tried to tell us to go somewhere and as we turned away my husband saw him signal another guy and he followed us,we left the souks and went back to the square where he then went back!! you really dont need a guide, and apart from going to and from the airport we did not use a taxi,we walked everywhere but saying that we walked from our hotel to the la menara gardens to the majorelle gardens and that took us about an hour or so!! we took a calech back and asked him to take us to ben youssef school,he dropped us at the souks which we then got lost!!! we returned the next day, just ask the souk workers and they will tell you where to find it.My other gripe was the leather bags i bought at the souk,he`s starting price was 350 dirham and i got it for 95 dirham!!! but one of the bags i discovered when i got home smells like animal poop!!!like its just left the tanneries, bought it for my 7yr old daughter who refuses to go anywhere near it lol!!all in all we had a great time,an experience i will never forget and i would definately recommend the sofitel.oh a great tip we were given by an english couple were if you get lost in the souks just look up to the satellite dishes and they all point to the kotuobia mosk, follow that direction and it will lead to the square!!!

excellent location, nice sized clean rooms with balconies. Outdoor heated pool which as the sun was shining was a real plus! Spa lovely with good treatments. Not the cheapest for food and drink, but no different from the 5 star hotels in London. The highlight was the excellent service throughout.

“Nice, but could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Having stayed in a few 5* hotels, this one is not one of the best. Some things were great, some were downright poor. But overall a nice stay. We travelled to Marrakesh for Christmas. Arranged a hotel car to pick us up, and although this was obviously contracted out, the driver was very efficient and informative. Would recommend this over a local cab, especially when arriving for the first time.
Check-in was very easy and quick and we had a free upgrade as Accor Platinum members. We had a junior suite which was very large and comfortable and had views of the mountains and over the pool. Some rooms were right by the pool and I imagine not be very private.
As per others' reviews, the food is pricey and not of great quality at the hotel. Better to walk to the square and try the local food for about 1/4 the price. The Breakfast buffet is large and impressive though. Room-service is a total disaster. Very poor quality and takes an average of 40mins-1hour!! Wanted a nice breakfast together before my wife went off to the spa. It turned up as she had to leave (couldn't change spa time as it was busy) so she had to have it cold later and I sat there by myself. Very disappointing -especailly when it happened twice!
Location is great and is a pleasant walk with easy directions to the main square.
Would not stay here again as there are some very high quality riads that I was not aware of prior to booking. However if you want the resort style trip with a great pool and relaxing area, then this is good, and still handy to all the action

Room Tip: Junior Suites are better as on higher floor and can see the view. Worth the little extra money

“Elegant hotel in great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

Elegant and traditionally styled Five star hotel with a very French flair.
The hotel is beautifully presented and the service is on the very good side (not quite excellent, but very good nonetheless).
Meals at the hotel are expensive but there is ample alternative restaurant choice close to the hotel.
A great convenient location makes this hotel an excellent chokicenfor any Marrakech stay.
