“Showing its wear, needs some work”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Visited here last month, and disappointed with the quality for the price. It opened a few years ago and now needs some upkeep it is just not getting. Dishes are chipped, drains are clogged, sheets are stained. The British owner tries hard, but is not cut out for the hospitality business. Local staff tried hard too, but not the same quality of service you'd expect at a high end, expensive riad. Also it's a very very long walk to the souks and the Jemaa el Fna. Beware of aggressive young men in the streets at night who will lie to you and tell you a gate is locked, or a way is blocked, in order to pressure you into paying them to get you back to the riad. These are criminals who are trying to rob you. I would never stay here again.

ZamzamRiad, Owner at Zamzam Riad, responded to this review

I have emailed this reviewer to query this review but he/she has not responded.

This review is bogus for the following reasons and I have told Trip Advisor. We take our service and maintenance at Zamzam very seriously. We have just received two Travellers Choice Awards for Service and Spa and sadly this often happens as a result. I have checked our guests and only one American living in Morocco has stayed with us during the past 3 months. I have emailed her to ask if everything is ok and she told me 'this review is not me, I love Zamzam'.

To respond to the points in the review as they may concern some readers (although you will see our other reviews do not reflect this)
- We have been open only 3 years so all furnishings are relatively new. We continually invest in maintenance especially plumbing, electric and painting on a daily basis. We can do this as we work in the riad and live locally.
- Showing wear and tear. I looked at the 3 photos depicting wear and tear and I couldn't see anything highlighted, only our beautiful lights created by the designer Yahya (we are the only riad in the Medina with his lights). The photo is contradictory it actually says, 'beautiful lights' showing wear and tear'. All riads have steep stairs that is their design.
- Our prices are very reasonable especially at the moment with great discounts. We provide a 5 star experience with very good prices. High end expensive riads charge from 300 - 400 euros we charge 125 euros with breakfast and wifi.
- Our guests are accompanied at night by our Night Guardien or Night Manager. We are all about looking after people at Zamzam. We have never had an incident in our area unlike other riads who maybe closer to the Jemaa, we are in a residential area. I walk to my car late at night to drive home.
- Lastly Marcus not being cut out for the hospitality business - this is a joke, he is the kindest most helpful man and anyone who knows him would agree.

“A trip not to be missed - highly recommended Riad!!”

A truly wonderful experience! The warm cup of local Moroccan tea upon arrival was the start of the service we were to enjoy. The staff were very helpful and informative and the owners, Emma and Marcus could not have done enough to ensure our comfort. A taxi was laid on to collect us from the airport which made our arrival hassle free. A very friendly guide was arranged on our behalf to take us around the medina and the souks - an investment which was well worth making. The rooms were delightful and clean, each with its own unique style. The bedding was very comfortable indeed all made even better with the addition of a hot water bottle supplied by the very attentive staff! (We went in January when the evenings were cold). Food was yummy enjoyed in front of an open fire. Thank you to Emma and Marcus for making our trip special.

Room Tip: They were all nice!!

“All before lunch!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

It was surreal, a short and inexpensive flight from Gatwick, the easiest of transfers and there we were in the luxurious and peaceful Riad Zamzam situated in the north of the old Medina in Marrakech, and all before lunch! What a gem of a place and such lovely staff who were so welcoming and attentive. The Riad is a perfect retreat after the hustle and bustle of the Medina, which is an experience in itself! But we were truly looked after from day one and so thankful for their advice and recommendations. Guides, taxis, trips, restaurant bookings and the airport transfers were all arranged by Emma and Marcus, the owners, who clearly put customer service high up on their agenda. Everything was top class, you only have to look at the attention they have paid to decor where the authentic and the modern are cleverly mixed, the food which is so deliciously appetising and a taste of the ethnic cuisine, plus the added bonus of the rooftop spa which is both relaxing and invigorating, to realise that they run this business with the utmost professionalism. Thanks Emma and Marcus, and your staff, for making our stay most relaxing and enjoyable.

“Beautiful riad & attention to detail”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Zamzam really is a peaceful retreat away from the tourist throngs, but still within comfortable walking distance of the action. Given its location, the unbroken views south across the medina from the rooftop terrace are wonderful, with the Atlas Mountains forming a stunning backdrop. The room was very spacious & plush with a beautiful marble & tadelakt wet-room/bathroom. I particularly liked the little touches such as the light fittings, fluffy robes, and gorgeous toiletries. The rooftop hammam & spa treatment room were also very welcome! Service was really efficient and discreet. Breakfast was served on the rooftop terrace and dinner in the salon, the food at all times excellent with a wide choice. Zamzam is a beautifully-restored, traditional riad complemented by some subtle modern detail. I thoroughly recommend a stay here.
