“1 STAR LOCATION”

I had 7 nights in November 2011 in Marrakech, from Australia, and started with 4 nights at Dar Moulay Ali in the Medina at 40€ per night. After 4 nights I had had enough of the Medina markets and thought I would have 3 nights in the city proper so by mistake I booked the Riad Ellizabeth. I was shocked when the taxi, for which I paid the Riad Elizabeth 10€, pulled up 200 metres from the Riad to find that I was still in the Medina. I am 65 and thought "this is not looking good" as I pulled my suitcase up the stairs behind the 30 year old concierge. My room was 3.5 x 4.0 metres + bathroom. There was a bed and one 4 leg dining table chair so no chair to sit in and read, no bench to put my suitcase on, no wifi in the room, only in reception, no TV, no tea making facilities and for 100€ per night I expected this. The clock radio/ipod dock was broken. The soap was unwrapped. The worst part of my one night stay at the Riad Elizabeth was the position. Having stayed 4 nights at the Dar Moulay Ali I understood how the Marrakech Medina works. The Elizabeth was nowhere near the main square, Jemaa el Afna, or restaurants, or the main streets, or public transport. The narrow streets were a nightmare. So I stayed one night and moved to the Ibis Centre Gare.. I felt a weight lift off me when I sat down for a coffee at the main train station square.
I had my last 2 nights at the Ibis at 40€ per night. There was TV, bench for my suitcase, single lounge, larger room, pool, outside grassed area, airport bus close to door, Touriste bus (14€ for 24 hour hop on/hop off pass), close to everything including the Medina (by taxi 5€). Marrakech is amazing. We live and learn.

“Brilliant Riad in a fascinating city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Let me just start by saying this is a 5 star review. The Riad Elizabeth is an extremely friendly, comfortable, well run and well located place to stay. It is perfect for the souks, The Foundouk restaurant is fantastic and within walking distance and exploring the myriad of streets around the Medina is fun.

From the moment we arrived at the Riad we were made to feel most welcome. We had dinner there on the the first night to acclimatise and the food was local and very, very good. During this time Kamal the friendly manager asked us what we wanted to see and made any necessary arrangements for us (booking taxis, giving general advice etc). Our room was fine and exactly as advertised, the rooftop terrace was a lovely place to have breakfast and a drink at the end of the day.

Having said all that I can understand, but don't agree with, some of the comments made on this site. The Medina can be very confusing but Kamal's "Magic" map is a godsend! Once you have found your bearings everything is fine. Simple research will tell you that staying in the new part of the City will be the best option for you if you don't want to wander the Medina all the time.

Similarly Marrakech is probably a city that is not to everyone's taste, but again, simple research before travelling there would tell you that.

In summary, if you want a top class Riad in the heart of a vibrant, buzzing city - but at the same time gives you something a little different then Riad Elizabeth is for you. If you want something that you could get in any other city in the world it probably isn't.

Like I said at the start of the review, this is a 5 star review. I loved it! Thanks to all the team for making our stay so enjoyable.

“Brilliant Riad”

We decided to spend New Year in Marrakech and after much deliberation picked Riad Elizabeth - I'm so glad we did!

From the start the service was faultless. Elizabeth replied to emails promptly and answered all questions we had. We were picked up from the airport and taken to the Riad where we were greeted by Kamal. Kamal was friendly and extremely helpful throughout our stay, making suggestions and arranging things for us. He really went the extra mile to help make our holiday great. The rest of the staff, although we couldn't really engage in conversation, were so nice to us and we really felt at home there.

The riad itself was lovely - tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. We have absolutely no complaints about the appearance of the riad or the rooms. We stayed in the Olivia Room which is the one with the open fire. We used it on one occasion and it was lovely and cosy. All rooms have their own heating system and this kept us nice and warm during the night and early in the morning. The room was a little noisy at times - as you would expect in a city location - so if you are a light sleeper maybe a room at the back would be better. This was only a very minor issue.

We had a meal at the hotel on New Years Eve and they set out the table beautifully for us and another couple who were staying. It was without a doubt the best meal we had the whole time we were in Morocco - delicious!

The location was good. Near the souks and not too far from the square either. We felt safe walking home at nights and a taxi was easily avaliable if necessary.

Overall we loved our stay in Riad Elizabeth - the service received was the best I have experienced in any hotel I have been to. Would stay here again and would recommend to friends and family.

“Very comfortable and well situated”

We stayed for three days over the new year and we were excellently catered for. A taxi was sent out to pick us up, we were given tea and a chance to relax when we arrived and a thoughtful new year's meal was arranged for us and some of the other guests that night.

The room was well decorated, clean, warm and quiet. We were able to skip lunch in the souk because after the generous daily breakfast on the roof terrace.

We spent our days in the souk which meant that the Riad was ideally located for us. Coming back from Djemm El Fna in the evening meant we had to walk around the souk, a small inconvenience but it adds only a quarter of an hour to the trip. The proximity to the markets meant that we were easily able to come back to drop off rugs, etc. during the day.

Thanks for a wonderful stay!

“It has been a year since being there...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

It has been a year since my son and daughter in law got married at the beautiful Riad Eliziabeth in Marrakech, Morocco. I can reflect better now than immediately following the trip. It was unusual in a beautiful sense and a wedding that I will never forget. The Riad is perfect and imipeccably kept and John , Elizabeth and the staff really do make you feel like part of their family during the stay. Kamal the manager will help you find your way around any adventure you choose to take. If considering Morocco, don't miss the Riad Elizabeth!

Room Tip: All rooms are fabulous with beautiful washrooms. The rooftop is amazing with fireplace and bar.
