I had 7 nights in November 2011 in Marrakech, from Australia, and started with 4 nights at Dar Moulay Ali in the Medina at 40€ per night. After 4 nights I had had enough of the Medina markets and thought I would have 3 nights in the city proper so by mistake I booked the Riad Ellizabeth. I was shocked when the taxi, for which I paid the Riad Elizabeth 10€, pulled up 200 metres from the Riad to find that I was still in the Medina. I am 65 and thought "this is not looking good" as I pulled my suitcase up the stairs behind the 30 year old concierge. My room was 3.5 x 4.0 metres + bathroom. There was a bed and one 4 leg dining table chair so no chair to sit in and read, no bench to put my suitcase on, no wifi in the room, only in reception, no TV, no tea making facilities and for 100€ per night I expected this. The clock radio/ipod dock was broken. The soap was unwrapped. The worst part of my one night stay at the Riad Elizabeth was the position. Having stayed 4 nights at the Dar Moulay Ali I understood how the Marrakech Medina works. The Elizabeth was nowhere near the main square, Jemaa el Afna, or restaurants, or the main streets, or public transport. The narrow streets were a nightmare. So I stayed one night and moved to the Ibis Centre Gare.. I felt a weight lift off me when I sat down for a coffee at the main train station square.
I had my last 2 nights at the Ibis at 40€ per night. There was TV, bench for my suitcase, single lounge, larger room, pool, outside grassed area, airport bus close to door, Touriste bus (14€ for 24 hour hop on/hop off pass), close to everything including the Medina (by taxi 5€). Marrakech is amazing. We live and learn.
