“not for the faint hearted”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

I went with a girl friend and we stayed for 4 nights at the end of june in the 40-50 degree heat.

The location of the Riad we thought was great, a 15 min walk from the main square. However after the first 5 mins of walking you are out of the main tourist drag and seeing the real Moroccan way of life. The last 2 mins before the Riad you have to take tiny little alley ways where children play and men loiter. Some might find this intimidating especially at night. We never felt threatened - though we did make sure our knees and shoulders were always covered, a strange concept for me in a hot country.

The Riad itself is lovely, the court yard with orange trees and a fountain are very calming. After check in which included our first try of mint tea we were taken to a lovely room on the first floor, unfortunately it was a double and we had requested a twin. We were led up to the second floor where there was a twin room. Both had aircon and were of a good size. We spent the first night here but realised in the morning that there was a prob with water pressure to the second floor, consequently the shower and taps got water intermittently. So to the third room a twin on the ground floor with no aircon but water. This was the smallest room but still a reasonable size. The decor is different in each room, some are more colourful than others. The bathrooms were a good size and had brass sinks! The beds were comfy, we never heard the call to prayer early in the morning, and we slept with the window open.

Breakfast was a casual affair at whatever time you wanted. Fresh orange, jams, bread, and a warm dish changing daily (we had omelet, crepe, and a Moroccan pastry/bread thing!) It was fine though i guess it could get boring for a whole week.
Dinner is available but must be pre booked, we at in the riad once and thoroughly enjoyed it. They do all typical Moroccan food - it was good.

The staff are wonderful unfortunately for us the english speaking member of staff wasn't about our whole stay so although we communicated in a basic manner we couldn't find out all the real insider tourist info.

There is a roof terrace with a few sun beds, it's interesting up the just looking at the views across the roof tops. During our time it was impossible to sun bath up here after 10 am and before about 4 pm (and i am a total sun worshiper) as there is no wind, or a shower or pool to cool off in (we did know this before we went i am just making you aware if you plan to just sun bath it might not be the best place to do it - in june at any rate)

Would I recommend this Riad -
YES if you are looking to see the real side of Marrakesh
NO if you are just interested in going out partying and laying in the sun all day

“A great find - but anywhere in the medina needs earplugs”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 March 2011

Riad Sidi Ayoub was a great find and I'd definately reccommend it and I'm so pleased to have chosen it. We were 2 female travellers and when we first arrived I was a bit wary that it is in the medina down a warren of little streets but we soon realised that it you not a few landmarks and be respectful (we sometimes used headscarfs) to people it was absolutely fine. The 2 cousins who manage the Riad cannot be more helpful and took us to places to show us the way if we were concerned. It took about 10 minutes to walk to "La Place" [Jeema de Dna] but the route was quite straightforward with lots to see along the way.

The service is good, they cannot do enough for you - one thing to note is that if you want dinner there the night you arrive, you may want to let them know (e.g. by email) in advance as they only cook upon request. Top tip may be if you are an English tea fan - they do have it but may run out so maybe take a few teabags for them. They will arrange an airport pick up for you – expect to pay 150 dirhams (about £15)

We had a double room, it was very clean and comfortable with ensuite shower and toilet. There are no luxuries like a TV in the room, nor a kettle (there is a tv room - we took a portable dvd player though) but drinks can be brought to your room.

There is a call to prayer from the mosque which can be heard every day at 5am (I doubt there is anywhere in the medina where it can't be heard as there are loads of mosques), and some rather loud birds in the beautiful orange trees in the Riad's courtyard. I took earplugs and was fine, my friend said she got used to it after a night and found it quite soothing.

Other recommendations in the Souks:
-Eating on Stall 22 (seafood) in the centre of La Place
-The Medina Spa for a tame Hamman (off Rue de Banques by La Place 250dirhams pp/hr)
-Cafe Arabe (http://www.cafearabe.com/) for hard to find drinks (pricey though)
-Cafe Des Espices for good cheap food and fresh orange juice you can stand your straw in (http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g293734-d909314-Reviews-Cafe_Des_Epices-Marrakech.html)

Other top tips
- Pick up a free map at the airport and get a phone with GPS tracker on it (iphone worked a treat even in the backstreets)
- Learn to just walk past people, not even saying a No Thank you.
-Learn to laugh when haggling
-Take a brolly and jumpers in March

“This is a great riad”

We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed this property. It was everything we imagined a Moroccan riad would be - the decor and rooms were great.

the staff are very friendly, provided good city and direction information and the service was great. We ate dinner one night in the riad - it was probably the best meal we had in Morocco - plentiful and very authentic.

We highly recommend this riad.

“Very good value pleasant riad”

We were a party of nine (four adults, five children aged three to sixteen) and stayed here for just one night on our way back home at the end of our holiday. I would definitely recommend it. The owners were kind and helpful. They met us off the main road with a trolley for our luggage and welcomed us to the riad with mint tea and a birthday cake for my husband and we watched some telly (the first telly we had seen on the trip) and looked through an enormous pile of magazines. The location is good, an interesting ten minute walk through the souks to the main square Jemaa el Fna. The rooms were enormous and very comfortable. The courtyard is uncovered and there are orange trees and lots of birds. It was quiet at night, and must be a way from any mosques as it was the only night I didn't hear the call to prayer. It did get a little bit cold (January) but there were plenty of blankets in the wardrobe.
We had a good breakfast of fresh bread and juice and coffee and jam and they didn't seem to mind when we asked for seconds of everything. Riad Sidi Ayoub is a really good place to stay and very reasonably priced.

We were well looked after. The food was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. The suite was spacious. The calmness and tranquility was a great escape from the madness that is Marrakech!
