“audacity”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2010

I read the previous reviews, and thought, "well there's always a few bad ones, but it looks generally ok" - NO. There are many other Riads that are as good, heed our warning! Somebody with access to our room couldn't resist rumaging around my girlfriend's bag to steal her used underwear...! We couldn't believe the audacity of it. Didn't take any actual valuables mind, but unless you don't mind some gross man sniffing your girlfriend's lingerie late at night, I'd STAY WELL AWAY. Avoid if you've any sense - especially if you are a lone female traveller.

“Lovely, friendly, didn't want to leave!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2009

A lovely riad with lovely staff who took care of all our needs and comforts.

My husband had mentioned that we were coming for our anniversary and on our arrival, one of the workers gave me a rose and congratulated us which was very sweet. We were then shown to our room where the bed was covered in rose petals! I was very touched by the sweet gestures, made our stay there feel even more special.

We felt very comfortable there, spending our evenings in front of the fire place, playing chess and enjoying mint tea. Breakfast and dinner were great. It was good to see the owners around the riad, having breakfast and mingling with us and other guests, it created a family atmosphere.

Overall, a great first experience of a riad, would definately return.

“Ok, but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2009

I was very curious about this Riad concept before going to Morocco. However, after staying at one each at Fes and Marrakech, I have become quite ambivalent, if not altogether allergic to it.

I don’t know why but I didn’t feel very comfortable staying there. It was neither a hotel nor a hostel nor was it [someone’s] home. Something was missing. Perhaps it was too artificial, too commercialized. Though they try to present it as something homely, it is definitely not.

In short, I really don’t know what to say.
I think, try for a night or so, it is an experience quite different from hotel, but that’s all.
Because, even in monetary terms, it is not at all a frugal alternative. On the contrary, I think many of Riads are over-priced, and I am saying it after taking all factors in account.

This riad was ok. However, Eur 85 for two, booked directly with the property - no agency commission - doesn’t seem very right in Fes. It is easily accessible as it lies right at the outer perimeter of the old town.

But as said earlier, I am glad that I have tried this type of lodging once but I am doubtful if I am going to go for a riad again.

“Noise, cold showers and stinky drains - definately overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2009

I stayed with my husband in Riad Attarin for 2 nights. This was our final accomodation/destination after we travelled around Morocco for a week.
Riad Attarine is really good looking Riad, owners are nice people. On the other side, it does not benefit from being in medina, since all the action is on the other side of the medina. You will be walking a while down the busy road to get to the medina's next gate, where all the sights/food/shopping and everything else that medina is all about is.

We stayed in Gingembre room which is just of main courtyard in the house. Very nice looking room, but stench of drains coming from the bathroom was appauling...
We had no hot water in the bathroom, and after i complained following day i was offered shower in another room. My husband decided to go smelly for a day. Shower was 'repaired', but then amount of hot water that came from tap can be called only a drizzle that stayed on for barely 15 seconds.

Drains were getting worse....
Windows and doors are facing main courtyard that was used as a diningroom. Soundproofing is poor.No matter if you shut your door and your windows, and your shutters, you are still left under impression that diners next door are clinking their glasses and having conversation in your bedroom.
Somehow we felt exposed and feeling of privacy was lost.
No value for your money.

“Nice for some, not for us.”

Riad Attarine at 100euro for 1 nights stay was supposed to be the "treat" of our Moroccon holiday. After staying at far cheaper (and very good) accomodation in the country, reading the reviews from trip advisor my expectations were high.
These expectations were at first met. The Riad has a great courtyard with nice traditional features like the fountain and stucco archways. Our room off the courtyard was similarly impressive with a 6M ceiling, nice looking bathroom, huge shower, soft towels etc etc. The welcome was warm and friendly and our taxi pick up was efficient.
Things afterwards however went downhill.
NOISE and LIGHT - I know we are in a traditional Riad but the location of our room just off the courtyard with a traditional (badly fitting) wooden door meant that every sound could be heard in our room. Dinner is served in the courtyard and anyone wanting an early night (before twelve) has no chance. People are literally dining 3M from your bedroom. There are no curtains so the room is also light when the cortyard is lit.
HOT WATER - We arrived tired and hot with the expectation of a hot shower. This was not the case. We complained and only 1 day later was the issue partially fixed (a drizzle)
SMELL - Our bathroom did have a waft of drain about it. Again this is a traditional old house. But at 100e per night is this acceptable ???
From the other reviews I think we were unlucky that we had the downstairs and most noisy room with dodgy shower, plus we were just 2 and not a large group however I can only judge my own experiance.
INFORMATION - I had to guess and ask if the Riad had a terrace upstairs. The staff did show us up on the second night but should I have to ask for hotel amenities (the terrace is very nice)
Singularly these things are not much but together they equalled a poor performance.
If I visited Fes again I would opt for a purpose built and cheaper hotel in Ville Nouvelle and get a taxi to and from the medina. The medina shuts at sundown and taxis are <3euro so you miss nothing.
Riads are large homes and in my opinion do not make good hotels. My advice to Riad Atterine is to not rent the downstairs room unless its to part of a larger group.
