My father and I have just returned from a birthday trip to Morocco and we had a really great time. One of the only glitches in our entire trip was our stay at the Riad Myra.
The place itself is beautiful, but when we were there we were only one of two other guests in the entire place. Not the hotels fault, but it did create a coldness to the place and because there were so few guests, the over compensation of the staff really annoyed me. Everytime we ate they would stand there and stare at us. I suppose they were trying to be helpful, but it was annoying.
This was not the main problem I had with this riad though.
My father and I had a reservation (made through Orbitz) for 5 nights. When we reserved with Orbitz we paid the $15 service fee and then understood that the amount for the reservation/nights would be paid once we checked out of the hotel itself.
When we arrived at this riad, we immediately told them that we wanted to only stay for 3 nights instead of the 5 and asked if this would be okay with them. They smiled and said "no problem". We even checked with them again later on and got the same answer.
Much to our surprise, when we went to check out three days later we were presented with the bill for the entire stay (not cheap!). When we reminded them that they said it was all right for us to shorten our stay they began to get irate with us and told us we had no other option but to pay because our reservation had been made through Orbitz and our contract was with them (or some other company - I could not understand what they said). Reading what the former person has said on this site, I now understand what "other service" they meant.
Regardless, I believe (and I told the hotel management) that I think it was bad customer service for them to not have mentioned this to us when we originally told them we would like to change the reservations. We asked them twice!
All they did was shrug their shoulders, tell us it was not in their hands, and grabbed our credit card from us. All those fake smiles were gone all of a sudden.
The hotel may have been nice looking, but I will never stay there again and do not suggest any one else stay there. Honestly, there are so many beautiful riads in Fez with much better reviews and I would try for one of them first.
Part of the reason to stay in a riad in the first place is for that homey bed and breakfast feel, but this place was so large and cold that we might as well have stayed in a regular hotel anyway.
By the way, there was a jazz festival in town during our stay and the town was buzzing with lots of tourists. Many hotels and riads were fully booked which was why we stayed at this one. I think I know now, why they were so empty and it possibly makes sense given their poor customer service.
Stay somewhere else - there are many options.
