“Didn't live up to my expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2010

In general the stay at the riad was ok, but unfortunately a number of incidents left a negative impression on me. Firstly immediately after arriving we were told that the rate we had been quoted on booking was incorrect, and we would need to pay more for the room. Secondly we realised we were put into a different room than the one we had booked, and the owner was quite deceptive with us when we questioned him on this. Thirdly, the bathroom absolutely stank and flooded everytime someone used the shower (and with four people sharing the same bathroom this was fairly frequently). After advising them of this problem nothing was done about it. Finally, we were charged 100 Euros to do a bag full of laundry (a bit of warning that they would charge 2.50 Euros per piece would have been nice!) that wasn't dry by the time we wanted to leave, which left us feeling quite distressed. As noted by previous reviewers we generally felt this hotel was pricey.
The riad did have a lovely rooftop terrace, with amazing views of the medina. It was also right in the middle of the action, which made it easy to get around on foot.
We really enjoyed the in house hammam and food was very tastey.

“An amazing sanctuary in a frenetic city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2010

My daughter and I spent a wonderful 3 nights in Les Oudayas and are so pleased that we chose this riad for our stay. Having read some of the comments on Tripadviser we were a bit wary of the riad and the city, but the mixed reviews of both could not be further from our experience.
The riad is exquisite and the welcome we received from all the staff was warm and helpful. Our room was extraordinary, filled with coloured with light from our stained glass windows and extremely peaceful in such a busy 'living' city. The view from the terrace over the medina was spectacular and the terrace proved to be a great spot for a bit of R and R when the sightseeing became too much. The meal we had in the restaurant at the riad was the best we had in Fez and I would recommend eating there at least once.
In addition, after reading some of the reviews we were slightly worried about what we might find in the city. Tales of hassle and harrassment had made us very wary. This was not our experience at all and we found everybody to be friendly, helpful and welcoming, particularly if we were lost in the medina. Of course, some of the stall holders are trying to sell you their products, but it is the same in any country you go all over the world and a polite no thankyou (in French of course) is sufficient to garner the response "OK, enjoy your visit.
I would definitely go again and would encourage others to do so - you will not be disappointed.

“Wonderful Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2008

We decided to have a nice break from hostels, etc. during our trek across africa. this hotel had a great staff that was even available to help w/some billing matters at around 1am. the food was excellent, as was the service.

it's not 5 star, but it's not meant to be. this is a very solid hotel for the price, not to mention the comfort. i would highly recommend this hotel. if they can make a guy from south texas like myself feel comfortable, you'll do just fine.

“Sleeping in a building site...”

We were in Fez for a quick 5 night break, and staying in one of the cheaper hotels in the Ville Nouvelle, but had decided to find a nice Riad for two nights. Oudayas didn't come cheap for Fez (£85 per night), but it sounded lovely, so we went for it.

Big mistake.

The room we were given was an absolute mess. Bare wires hanging out of the walls, a hot, naked bulb in a strange alcove at the bed head where pillows and indeed hands could come into contact with it, a naked electricity cable hanging into the shower cubicle, water running down the recently completed tadelakt walls in the bathroom, and everywhere, thick white dust from the plaster walls which, unbelievably, hadn't been painted. Touch a wall, get dust all over your clothes. They'd unpacked our bags, and hung clothes in the closet, getting them absolutely covered in plaster dust. The whole room smelt of damp, the bedclothes felt damp, and when we complained, the rather vague young man in charge of the place went um and ah and gave the impression that he wasn't that bothered. So we checked out next morning, refusing to pay the balance of our bill (we'd payed a £45 deposit, but the dry cleaning bill for a jacket and trousers ruined by the plaster would more than make up for the rest), and went back to the comfort of our cheap little hotel room. Also, the pool and the hammam, both selling points when we were booking, were out.

I get the impression the owners are being a bit greedy, and opened it before it was ready...

“What a great find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 May 2007

My girlfriend and I just loved this Riad. The staff was the best. I booked through a French agency and they forgot to tell the Les Oudayas that we were coming. We were escorted to the open area and was having a glass of wine when the owner informed us he had no reservation for us. Ouch ! He then told us he already found another place for us to stay the night, Riad Sara. Abdoul, his right hand man took us to the Riad. We, then returned to the Les Oudayas the following day. We were always greeted with smiles. We spent 6 night there.. The owner happened to be in town the week we were there. What a delight he was. The hotel arranged for us to do day trips, we used Abdoul, the taxi driver. He is wonderful. Please ask for him. He smiles and laughs all the time. I would highly recommend this hotel, the owner Froud, I think met with the agency that I booked with, he needed to be reassured that he was to get all the bookings through other agencies, so I hope he got this fixed. If you do stay at the Les Oudayas, say hello to everyone and "a special hello to Greneral Patton" the resident turtle. Linda and Barbara
