We went to Fez as part of our honeymoon trip and decided to spend a bit extra on some nice accomodation. The website makes this hotel look very plush and offers all sorts of extra services. Despite the mixed reviews, I was hopeful that we would have a good experience.
When we arrived, there seemed to be some confusuon about who we were and when I gave the staff member my email confirmation, it was abruptly wisked away never to be seen again. There was no mint tea or pastries offered despite the website promising some on arrival. The room was ok, but smelled of damp. Toiletries consisted of a bar of soap and a sachet of shower gel, what you would expect in a 3 star. There was only a tub with a handheld shower so you had to squat in the tub to bathe. I also had to catch 2 cockroaches that were in the bathroom one night - I suppose everywhere has pests, but just added to the disappointment of what we thought would have been a really nice 5 star hotel.
Breakfast is pretty good, and we were pressured to eat lunch and dinner at the Riad but we politely and firmly declined and they didn't bother us too much. Food is really cheap in the Medina. We also were approached by a guide in the riad, but we chose to explore on our own and we were completley fine.
The hotel also advertises free wireless internet, which also didn't exist on our stay. You must pay to use the sauna and the hammam.
The main problem is that we never really felt welcome in the hotel. Staff were generally friendly, but a tad disorganised and not very forthcoming. You could easliy spend half the price and have a much better experience elsewhere.
