“Traditional and understated elegance”

If you are looking for traditional Moroccan hospitality in a traditional setting then the riad fez yamanda is for you. If you are looking for they type of accommodation and facilities you get in every other corner of the world I suggest you look elsewhere. The location is fabulous and you can really taste the real Morocco the minute you step outside the hotel and indeed inside the hotel too. The do not give you a plethora of choice in regard to a menu, you simply eat the traditional food that the staff and management also probably eat. As an authentic experience this trip really takes some beating and as we also got the lowest possible price from luxury-riads.com the price would also take some beating. Would I recommend this hotel to teenagers or the young party set? Probably not. Would I recommend it to someone who wants the real Morocco with a few comforts? Yes.

“Beautiful hotel was overshadowed by overly expensive dinner”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2009

Initially we were delighted, on arrival we were served with mint tea and the hotel itself is undoubtedly beautiful. After this kind of welcome we decided to stay for dinner that night.

When we came down for dinner there was no menu, no choice and the food was quite basic. It was only after dinner on the second night that we learned how expensive the dinner was, 350 dirham each per meal, and in total we were given a bill for 1400 dirham not including water or a tip!! This absolutley shocked us given that we hadn't spent this much in total on food for a whole week in Morocco up to this point. For example the following night we ate a comparable meal nearby for less than 100 dirham for both of us!

We tried not to let this overshadow our stay but we couldn't help but feel that we had been taken advantage of.

While the hotel is pretty we did feel that it was a little overpriced.

Firstly, Riad Fes Yamanda management would like to thank you for your valuable feedback, which we take very seriously to ensure we improve our service for future guests. We now have new management and staff who are striving to ensure our guests have the best possible experience.

In response to your comment, Riad Fes Yamanda is delighted to announce our new 3 course menu featuring your choice of a selection of gorgeous traditional dishes and salads, all priced at 180 Dirham per person. In addition we have on offer our signature dish “Tagine Yamanda” – our special traditional beef stew cooked with dates and apricots infused with almond - priced at 200 Dirham per person. And, of course, bread and mineral water is complimentary.

There is no hidden taxes, no service charge and we expect no tips from our diners. All we want to see is delighted customers, and hopefully a good recommendation!

“Old world charm!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2009

We stayed in this riad for two nights. We could easily find it as signs lead there from the main square in the batha district. THe first thing that strikes you upon entrance is the greatness of the building. For us foreigners its almost like walking through an old palace museum with all its huge doors, heavy curtains and intricate mosaics and plastertechniques. The courtyard is covererd by milky glass which is prety much the only part of the riad that could be improved. This because the resulting white light slightly gives the place the feel of a mausoleum. Some more yellow light in the form of lights our candles and some big plants would quickly do the trick. This is a pure matter of personal taste though.

The room was perfect with everything, including a/c, we wanted in it. Especially the full-body jet shower was great to blast off all the dust after a brilliant day in the sweltering medina. The breakfast was pretty good and definitely enough to survive on. Also the (Moroccan) owners and staff were very kind and assisted us with anything we might need. We arrived after a terrible trip (8 hrs in a train of +50 degrees celcius where the a/c broke) and were welcomed (as usual) with great mint tea after which we found our (pretty heavy) luggage in our room whichhad been airconditioned for us. Also one of the staffmembers arranged a restaurant for us. Eventhough slightly pricy, we would never have found this old palace ourselves and it was absolutely fantastic with great food and live moroccon performers. One small hitch might be that nearly none of the staff speaks proper english. We easily got there with some basic french though.

What the location is concerned, it's right off the yellow route (the palaces route, one of the walking routes through Fes) and is a less than 5-minute walk from Ba Bou Jaloud, the most used entrance to the Medina and the startingpoint of the above mentioned walking tours. Also there are many museums and a petit taxi rank just around the corner. Eventhough its vicinity to all the facets its very quiet which provides for a good nights rest. In other words, the location could not have been better!

We very much recommend this place on your visit to Fes.

“loved the Large Maimonide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2008

"The historic nature and beauty of this Ryad make it worth the trip". I'd been in Fes in the past but didn't get a chance to fully explore the city. I have to say I really enjoyed hanging out down in the medina since is very close to the Ryad. But what really surprised me was how many cool museums, stores, and entertainments are around this magic place. Absolutely fantastic food and plenty of it. Atmosphere great, couscous, tajines, mint tea, and Moroccan cookies very good. My wife and my 8 month old son who's "teething" enjoyed the staying and the delicious food. We will definitely go back when we return to Morocco. The hospitality in this country is general and in this Ryad is special.

  • Liked — its proximity to the medina, the beauty of our room and the food.
  • Disliked — Nothing. It was almost perfect
