“Upgraded Ka Eo Kai Unit 25A Was Great!”

We had planned our Kauai vacation a year in advance for our 8th Anniversary. We had read all the reviews online, but knew we wanted to stay in Princeville on the North side of the island. Tip: Plan ahead and do all your research online before you leave. This will give you an idea of all the places to see/hike/explore/swim/tour/eat and you can plan out your week of activities on the first day so you have a plan. The 40 minute train tour was quite memorable and we enjoyed feeding all the wild pigs/chickens in the middle of the tour. Take advantage of good weather for the canyon tour. Many days it will be rained out/fog, so monitor the weather for this trip/tour. We were pleasantly surprised by unit 25A, which was an "upgraded" unit with all new granite/tile/floors. The unit was huge and had everything we wanted, including in the kitchen, for we enjoy cooking every other night and eating in. Make sure to try a Ono Char Burger for lunch on the side of Hwy 50, south of the resort, a nice island treat. The pool was nice and there was poolside BBQ's for the guests to use. The front desk was very helpful. You can save a bit by planning ahead. We shopped at Safeway and Costco once for our extra food needs for the week. Foodland right next door to the resort had everything else you might need for your stay. Kalypso had some of the best calamari I've ever eaten. And their signature seafood pasta was quite a treat. Make sure to take advantage of all the roadside farmers markets and daily farmers markets for the best in local, fresh fruit and vegetables. We put over 700 miles on the rental car this week. There was construction going on in the distance, but we were out exploring the whole island each day from sunrise to sunset, so it didn't bother us at all. The chickens were a welcome alarm clock in the morning. We will enjoy coming back again in the future. In reading all the recent reviews, I think some of these people would find something to whine about at any resort they stayed at. We enjoyed our stay here and look forward to returning next year.

Room Tip: Make sure to get an upgraded unit.

“Nothing Bad About This Resort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I was close to rating this property above average - it is close.

First week of January 2012 and we are staying in a 2 BR upper unit (2B) at the Ka 'Eo Kai. This is one of the units that have been upgraded. We did view one of the units that have not been upgraded and other than a bit worn, it would not have been a deal breaker if that is where we had been asssigned. Unfortunately our unit does not have a direct view to the ocean which would have been better but the unit has trees out the back and is generally quiet. True- there is no air conditioning. The temperature is comfortable with plenty of cross ventilation and ceiling fans when needed. I would definately call early and request both an upper unit and one with a view of the ocean - buildings 23 through 36. Units 8, 9, and 10 are on the main road (Wylie) and units 12, 18, 19, 22, 26 and 27 are close to the road to the Princeville Hotel. I say ocen view units as there is a golf course between the resort and the ocean.
You can easily walk to the Princeville center where there are a couple of restaurants and the grocery store but a vehicle is really needed to get to the beachs and other areas of interest.
The front desk was accomodating on all requests. There is a bit of renovation workers noise during the day but mostly we were out during this time.
I enjoy the open windows and cool fresh breeze. Don't worry about alarm clocks - the roosters will take care of your morning wake up call.
Call ahead (as far as possible - my mistake for not doing this) and make your requests known.

Room Tip: Upper floor - no one above you and cathederal ceilings. Buildings 23 through 36 have ocean views fr...

“This place should be condemned.”

We went back to Kauai to celebrate our six year wedding anniversary with our four year old son (having being married in Princeville) and found at the Wyndham Ka `Eo Kai THE MOST DISGUSTING HOTEL I HAVE STAYED IN IN 35 YEARS. The minute we walked in, we saw head and pubic hairs all over both bathrooms, 2 inch cockroaches on the walls, the carpets were stained and RIPPED all over. The linoleum in the bathrooms was broken and stained, and the bathrooms were so nasty I wouldn’t let my family touch anything much less take a shower. I was expecting an outdated unit from the reviews, but not one with ghetto level filth. Plus some of the doors didn’t lock and there were 6 sliding glass doors on a floor unit by the main drag, which to us was a major safety hazard.

To make matters worse, there is no air and our unit, 12A, along with MANY others is right on the main drag going up to all the hotels and condos in Princeville. So unless you want to suffocate you have to open the windows. It was like staying 4 ft from a highway – it was so loud we couldn’t even stand to be in the front part of the condo and all had to pile in the small queen bed in the back bedroom to sleep in that nasty place. My son vomited all morning after staying only one night and he has never vomited ever in his four years of life.

I complained twice the first night and asked to be moved just to be told there were no other units available. After getting no sleep in that terrible place and having my son get so sick, when they called to see if I was going to the 8:30 timeshare sales pitch I gave that lady hell. In 20 years of my family belonging to RCI and 15 years of traveling as a marketing professional, I have NEVER stayed in such a dump, much less in Kauai, which I have visited 4 times not to mention traveling 15 plus times in Hawaii. I told her the living conditions were unacceptable, we would be leaving immediately, and submitting a massive complaint and bill for our new accommodations to RCI.

We are now happily staying at the Shearwater right up the road, with sounds of the ocean and not the highway. The place isn’t spectacular, but it is clean and peaceful, and what I minimally expected after traveling 2 days and paying over $3K to get here. However, the place at the Wyndham Ka `Eo Kai should be shut down. I can’t believe they could with good faith let anyone stay at such a dump.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

“NOT UP TO WYNDHAM VACATION RESORT STANDARDS”

Our 2 BR suite unit had no tv in the 2d suite. Check in was not ready on time. No noise insulation from unit above us. Carpets in clubhouse were dirty. Staff was great except for one of the persons at front desk and one of the consierge people.

Room Tip: Nearer the clubhouse the better.

“Excellent Staff - Beautiful grounds”

Just checked into Ka 'Eo Kai yesterday. They gave us a first floor unit facing the pool with the ocean in the distance. The unit is dated, although I understand they are in the midst of rennovation. Unfortunately, the people upstairs has an extremely hyperactive child who has been running constantly overhead since we got here...not really running...more like STOMPING. (NOTE TO PARENTS: when vacationing please consider that your childs cute behavior to you can be ruining other peoples vacation)

The sign of a good resort isn't necessarily that there are no problems, but how the resort acts on your complaints. The front desk staff has been extremely helpful and cooperative. The resort is fully booked, but they were very accommodating and are moving us to Makai Club Villas. BTW, Makai Club Villas are VERY nice. They allowed us to check out the place first and offered to have someone come move us.

I hate leaving Ka 'Eo Kai, as it really is beautiful here.

A big thank you to front desk staff Pam and Deni for their assistance. They were awesome.

Room Tip: I would book a second floor room, as the ceiling/floor are paper thin.
