“Coincidence I contacted MRSA (Staph Infection) during my stay? Please read before booking, as this could happen to you.”

I would only wish this stay on my worst of all enemies. I know this is a long review, but it is in your best interest to read it all, even if you're thinking about staying just for one night. Consider what I went through, as it covers everything about my stay...

I am a 35 y/o, caucasian woman who was there alone for 3wks on business. My room was paid for by Corporate. I was suppose to be there for 4wks, but I could no longer take it. The first day of arrival (and thereafter), the Manager, Gabrielle and her first in Command, who isn't important to remember her name, were very rude and sarcastic with no respect. The two young 20 somethings needed to be slapped and taught some manners. If I were their Superior, they would've been terminated immediately for disrespect and carelessness, as their behavior continued throughout my stay.

When you needed something, they would NEVER answer the phone. If you left a voice mail, they would NEVER call you back. They seemed to always be "Out to Lunch." If there were an emergency, there was a sign to contact an alternate number. That number was also not answered. So when I went to the office, the Manager would sarcastically say, "Didn't you read the sign if we couldn't be reached in the office?" Of course I did and I couldn't get an answer from that line either. She then would shrug her shoulders, say she didn't know what to tell me because the sign is right there, right there on the door I walked through. I also believe the two were purposley locking me out of my room, although I couldn't prove it. All to frequently, I would come back and I couldn't get into my room. For some reason, my key card would no longer work. As I was catching on, I would make sure it would work when I left, but continually, by the time I came back, it, of course, would not. One night I couldn't get into my room after coming back from the ER. I was litteraly in tears from having been locked out so many times it was ridiculous. I was in no mood or condition to trot up to the second floor to find I was locked out and back down to the office to find out they weren't there. I had to wait in my car until I found a room attendant. That room attendant said she couldn't let me in my room because the Manager had told her not to and she of course couldn't tell me why. Another room attendant was also there. Her and I had exchanged greetings upon passing before, she said she would let me in. The other attendant had warned her not to, but this lady, I was so grateful for. She was an Angel when I was in dire need! She could tell I was ill, pale, in tremendous pain and had been crying. As we walked up, she asked if I needed her to call someone or an Ambulance, or if there was anything she could do for me. I was just grateful she let me in my room. They terminated her. I know this because she came to my room to say goodbye, to check on me and told me what they did. I felt so awful and I didn't know what I could do for her, as I felt personally responsible.

The first day of my stay, after a straight 11 hour drive, all I wanted to do was sleep until the next day. The first room I looked at was unacceptable, as they told me I had two rooms to choose from. It smelled of mold and smoke terribly (I am a smoker) and was not cleaned. I asked for a non-smoking room, however she said they do not carry non-smoking rooms, every room is available to smoke in. I checked out the next room, as it too was unacceptable. It also smelled of mold and smoke unbearably. This room had pubic hairs on the toilet and in the shower as it too, had not been clean. I wanted to find another hotel so bad, but it was already Corporate paid and I was so tired from the drive and unfamiliar with Athens, as I had never been there. I ended up getting a handicap room which didn't smell as bad and I didn't see any pubic hairs anywhere. It still smelled of smoke and mold, just not as bad. When the A/C was running, it would spit out black mold chunks onto your bed and make the room smell even worse. Once you got use to the smell, you couldn't smell it no longer, only when you came back in, lol. The next day I went out and bought my own Lysol Disinfectant (as I don't believe even the Generic could handle the job), that's how unsanitary and disgusting these rooms were. Honestly, I am no neat freak either.

The only places I had been during my 3wk stay, was work and my room. By the end of the second week, coincidentlly, I was in the ER, being treated with MRSA (a type of Staph Infection, mine being hard to treat). I had never had this before and I was told these germs can live on objects for however long. My guess/opinion...With the room being so unsanitary, that which even a customer has to go buy their own cleaning and disinfectant agents, I had to have came in contact with the infection from there. It's possible the previous tenant before me could have had it and if the Staff didn't clean the room, as so obvious they didn't and the Staph Germs can live on objects for however long, leads me to believe, I contacted MRSA, from my room.

I thought I read that the rooms came fully equipped, to meet all your extended stay needs. I must have misread the web site. They do not come equipped with any untensils, dishes, cookware, glasses, etc. You are supplied with two bath towells, two wash cloths, a sheet set with two pillow cases, one roll of toilet paper and no more. You are responsible for washing, maintaining and replenishing these items during your stay, as you are not supplied with any extras. There is a tenant paid, onsite laundry facility that stinks of urine. Needless to say, I did not use it. You could smell the urine as you walked by it and through the dryer vents. I already discussed the smell and cleanliness of the rooms. It did have a microwave, which I couldn't reach and couldn't see how a handicap person would be able to either. It did have a stove I couldn't get to work after I had bought cookware and food. The refrigerator was decent in size, no complaints, larger than a mini fridge. It was pretty well cleaned, no better or worse than my own. I thought the condition of the linens were no different than any other motel, so that is not a complaint either.

I had seen several Police cars there a few times and as many as three at a time, during the week as well and not during football season. I did not stick around to find out why, I would just run straight up to my room, lock and deadbolt the door at all times. My opinion from what I saw, it looked like, it housed a certain type of people, doing certain types of possibly illegal activites, perhaps that's why the Police were there, in my best guess opinion.

During my stay, I did try to contact the Head Corporate Office of Inn Town Suites. Believe it when I got no answer and no return call back after leaving a message. Before the name change, it was called Suburban. I should've considered the reviews on that site as well. This review was from my own, personal experience and completely in all honesty with no exaggerations. I would recommend to an enemy but never a family member or friend. It is ultimately your decision and your risk, as what happened to me, could happen to you.

We certainly regret any issues you experienced with your room. While we are indeed limited service, we are designed to provide basic extended-stay lodging needs at an extremely great value. If the room was not clean, we did not meet our own standards. In fact, our required protocol involves three inspections of a room prior to it being released for sale. We have addressed this issue with staff on site.

In regard to your other claim, there are numerous ways to contract MRSA (see Mayo Clinic website) and of course we have no means of corroborating or disputing your claims. However, we can state that no other guest has ever had any such issues.

“Friendly, but spartan”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 July 2007

Began an extended (3 month) business stay in Athens at the Suburban Extended Stay. Thought I would save the "firm" some money (which I did) by starting out at the Suburban before leasing an appt.

Pros: The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful! Depending on your negotiated price, the value is quite good ... but remember, you get what you pay for.

Cons: The rooms are very spartan, w/ older "linens" and an A/C positioned nearly on-top of your bed.

  • Liked — Price, internet connectivity, front-desk help, microwave/fridge
  • Disliked — Very spartan, somewhat musty (even in a non-smoking room)

Thank you for your review. We are happy you found us to be a good value. While I would hope we are more than "spartan", we are indeed limited service and really meant for those needing accommodations for several weeks to several months. We operate like a hybrid aparment/hotel ... offering more service than an apartment and less than a traditional nightly stay hotel.

However, based on this model, we are able to offer apartment style studios for incredibly low weekly rates ($159.99 for an entire week at this location). Quite a few of our guests are in between apartments such as you were. We're glad we could meet your needs and we hope to see you again in the future.
