A unique and wonderful place. The setting overlooking the mountains, Copan River, ruins and town is spectacular. The staff and service are exceptional (e.g., they even provide complimentary laundry service daily). Cuisine is excellent - they use very fresh local ingredients and prepare traditional but very healthy dishes. Many activities are available, and HSL will make the arrangements for you seamlessly. We chose to visit the ruins of Copan and Quirigua and to spend 3 days birding; HCL arranged for a wonderful guide for all of this. Hiking, horseback riding, yoga and massage are also on offer. As for birds: a ferruginous pygmy owl roosts next to the main lodge and just on the premises can be seen and heard blue-crowned and turquoise browed mot-mots, Montezuma Oropendulas, several species of hummingbird, black-headed saltators, white crested magpie jays and many others. A variety of different habitats can be visited within a few miles of HSL and the bird life is quite prolific. WiFi is free but the WiFi server is a bit erratic. However, telecom is consistent and clear, so e-mail can easily be done with BlackBerry or smartphone. Lighting in rooms is solar-powered and low-intensity, so if you like to read in bed, bring a headlamp or booklamp. Flavia, owner and hostess of Hacienda San Lucas, is warm and charming and will make you feel welcome and at home. The Copan area is well patrolled by police and you will feel quite safe there. HSL will arrange a private car and driver to transport you between the San Pedro Sula airport and HSL (it's a 3-hour drive), or you can take a Hedman Alas bus and HSL will meet you at the bus stop.
Room Tip: If you need to use the internet often, request a room in the main house (there are only 2) to be wit...
