We went in Roatan to check dive site and check the island. We had in mind to move there to retire and buy a B&B and a scuba shop. We stayed at Villagio Verde. The couple that own it are from Holland. Very nice couple! They are there to help you as much as they can. It was for us a different kind of bed & breakfast. The rooms are not in the owners' house. The kitchen is in another building. They have two wooden buildings with two rooms each, their house, the kitchen, a small pool and a washing area. The couple prepare and decide what they will serve you for breakfast. They bring it on your balcony, accompanied by two dogs that are gently waiting for you to give them something to eat. Those dogs don't bother you, they just sit and wait. Beside the breakfast, they let you use the kitchen for your own food that you can buy at the market or buy it from them. They have a price list ready for you.
They pick you up and bring you back at the airport and they can give you a lot of information about the island. They know a lot since they are there since few years.
The bad side of it is Internet. Most of the time, it does not work and you have to walk around the land to find where your computer will catch the signal that keep varying from Excellent to Poor within seconds. When it rain, during two days, outside of raining season, we were not able to connect. The hot water is also very complex to use because it is very hot for few second and then cold. You have to close everything to restart again to have hot water for a shower. No TV, no phone, no AC. The douyble bed is two single beds together. Not very romantic.
Roatan is a good place to dive and if you stay in a resort. Us, we want to explore the island. The beaches, outside all included hotels, were extremely dirty, the horror stories I heard about people getting rob, how dangerous it is to drive, etc., etc. is not an interesting experience. They try to screw you all the time. The invoice in the restaurant, the taxi driver, the souvenir shop, the diving shop and everywhere we went, they try to screw you. The only couple that did not try were the couple where we live during our stay.
Our final impression of Roatan is that if you want to enjoy it, go with the all included and stay in the resort. If you like adventure, go on your own, everywhere. It is an island. Just expect to be dealing with people that think you are rich and they want all your money (they will do what they can to get it). The island has a lot of young people and they are there to party.
