I question EVERY favorable review of The End of The World. The owner, Capt Brian, failed to mention the additional flight between San Pedro and Guanaja when we asked for a run down of the flight schedule to Guanaja (LaCeiba to Guanaja took an additional 2 hours in time/layover). I was told by the owner that I would be able to use my cell phone in order to check on my family but discovered there was no access to the tower from the resort. Brian later acknowledged that he was aware of that fact. I asked to use the owner’s satellite phone for one minute each night which was granted but only after asking multiple times each night. The owner made it clear that my use of the phone was unwelcome by standing over me and sighing while I spoke to the nanny. I was later provided a bill for $24.00 for the 8 minutes I used over 5 days.
This resort does not meet my definition of “all inclusive.” We began our journey at 7:30 am and arrived at the resort at approximately 5:30 pm. We were tired and hungry but were offered no food and provided only stale animal crackers until dinner was eventually served at 9:30. Breakfast was not provided unless requested and consisted of cereal and milk on mornings when the cook was hung over from the previous night. This applied to lunch as well. For lunch we were provided cold cuts and white bread. It was interesting to note that for dinner we were fed fish caught by previous guests. I was concerned we would starve if the fish ran out and no other guest had a reel/rod. If you do not like what they offer, there are no other choices and they will not take you into town unless they have a scheduled run to pick up supplies.
The staff consisted of one cook, one bartender, and one housekeeper who also served in the kitchen. The employees expect tipping and the housekeeper offered sexual services to the male guests.
The accommodations consist of two duplex cabanas with an additional cabana serving as Capt Brian’s residence in which there is plywood dividing it into two separate living areas with one for guests. The wood was thin and the gaps were large enough to deprive the guest of any privacy. Floor fans were provided but the generator was turned off when the staff either concluded their work or drinking for the night which could be between 10 pm to 2 am. My departure was scheduled for 6:30 am, Capt Brian acknowledged this to me the previous evening, yet failed to turn the generator on, forcing me to prepare and pack in darkness.
There is no hot water and the cold water can be VERY cold. You are provided with one towel and the quality of the towel is not worth mentioning.
The sand fleas are the WORST I have ever seen and I have traveled to the Bay Islands each summer since 2001. In addition, I felt a tremendous sense of danger where I have not felt that in Roatan or the mainland. The locals carry machetes and Capt Brian talked about the them surrounding him on a prior occasion with the intent to rob him.
The locals I met upon my arrival and departure at the airport in Guanaja made disparaging remarks about the End of the World Resort and asked why I chose that resort among the others. I met Americans who had stayed at Dunbar Island who reported nothing but a positive experience.
I do not feel the owner was interested in the comfort and safety of the guest but rather focused on profit. I wanted to go home from the moment I arrived and felt it was a serious waste of money.
