“Avoid EOTW like the plague”

I wish that I would have seen this sight before going to ETOW. To call this a resort is an absolute joke. "Captain" Brian us nothing but a rip off artist and our stay there was an absolute nightmare. We wound up leaving to move to Graham's Place after two days when it became clear that there was nothing as advertised at ETOW and despite traveling to many third world locations I felt less safe there. Just a few highlights : no hot water (very cold in fact which Capt Brian felt was a novelty), no safe drinking water (you had only what came out of the tap), horrible food (spam and an egg for breakfast and waterlogged sandwiches for lunch) .... all for an all inclusive price. What a joke, stay away from this place!!!!

“Captain Brian is no Captain”

The web page and photos failed to give the correct information.
The cabins are located up the hill 100 steps.
There is no hot water.
The food was very basic,. certainly not the menu on Captain Brian's web page The photos on the page show nothing else on the beach. There are 2 other small resorts close. Not the privacy that we expected. Sand fleas horrible.
There is no choice of meals.
We brought our own dive equipment but the others diving with us who used the resorts equipment had constant failures. Meal times were based on Brian or the cooks schedules NOT the guests. Brian was not around most of the week, he offered no guidance or assistance in any way. When we wanted to go to town to get supplies that were not available at the resort we were charged 35 dollars US per person. It was called a tour of Bonnacca but we had to stop and allow the staff to get fuel and help with shopping for the resort. We have been travelling south to dive for over 10 years. This was the most expensive holiday with primitive accomodation and demeaning character. We would not recommend this to anyone. It is most certainly the end of the world. ,Once you get there you are on Brian's schedule ,it does not matter what you want.

“Nightmare in paradise”

If you want to have a relaxing time and/or if you're serious about diving, avoid EOW. Allright, the setting is nice, the view from the hill room is great, once you've climbed the 134 steps ... That is the only thing this place has to offer. Brian, the owner and divemaster, has nothing of a professionnal. He never showed up at the airport as promised the previous day. He left to La Ceiba prior to our arrival without leaving any instruction to the staff. We had to try to get things organised by ourselves which is not an easy thing in such a remote place (no telephone network, radio working sometimes ...). With a lot of patience and the help of local fishermen, we finally managed to get in touch with Coral Beach Dive Center and get ourselves under water. Believe it or not, we have been asked to pay for a full 3 days dive package without having made one dive with EOW ! Not to mentionned that we had to argue for ages to get things settled. Do not leave your passport as it might be used to force you to pay for someting wich is not worth it. Dive are OK but not better than in Roatan or Utila and they will cost you 15$ more in Guanaja. Added to the flight fare to get there and the cost of the water taxi to go from place to another, you have to be very motivated when considering a stay in Guanaja.

“NOT AS ADVERTISED”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2007

We selected the EOW resort because of the lovely setting and because we wanted to try Guanaja after numerous trips to Roatan. Although the resort setting is quite wonderful, the operation leaves so much to be desired that we will never go there again. The owner ("Captain Brian") greeted us as promised with drinks on the beach. However, from there everything was downhill. The climb to the room was 100+ steps. The view from the room was nice, but hard to enjoy as we tried not to go back up to the room very much. NO HOT WATER was a big problem, although Brian remarked that we were "spoiled" that we wanted hot water. And he denied that it was cool, when it was often downright cold. Food was sometimes OK, sometimes really bad, and there was no choice. You ate whatever the cook had decided to make that meal.

For serious divers, the dive operation is a real problem. Capt. Brian spent most of our dives "collecting" from the reefs for his tank, which just meant he put things in an aquarium to die or be eaten. He also bragged about spearfishing on the same reefs, although he also acknowledged that the reefs are supposed to be protected. He is a big part of the reason that the reefs directly around EOW had far less fish and lobster life than those on the other side of the island. (We spent 1 day diving with another operation -- Coral Bay -- and got to see first-hand the significant contrast.) Also, the advertised "2 boat dives per day" were actually one 2-tank dive in the morning. Brian then disappeared for the rest of the day and evening.

The problem with the electricity was usually that Brian turned the generator off and on in response to his own needs, not the comfort of his guests. Sometimes he turned it off as early as 8 pm and did not turn it back on until 4 pm the next day. (He admitted that he often "forgot.")

Overall, we were very disappointed and were counting the days until we could leave -- not the way we wanted to spend our vacation.

“Hotel California Revisited”

I question EVERY favorable review of The End of The World. The owner, Capt Brian, failed to mention the additional flight between San Pedro and Guanaja when we asked for a run down of the flight schedule to Guanaja (LaCeiba to Guanaja took an additional 2 hours in time/layover). I was told by the owner that I would be able to use my cell phone in order to check on my family but discovered there was no access to the tower from the resort. Brian later acknowledged that he was aware of that fact. I asked to use the owner’s satellite phone for one minute each night which was granted but only after asking multiple times each night. The owner made it clear that my use of the phone was unwelcome by standing over me and sighing while I spoke to the nanny. I was later provided a bill for $24.00 for the 8 minutes I used over 5 days.

This resort does not meet my definition of “all inclusive.” We began our journey at 7:30 am and arrived at the resort at approximately 5:30 pm. We were tired and hungry but were offered no food and provided only stale animal crackers until dinner was eventually served at 9:30. Breakfast was not provided unless requested and consisted of cereal and milk on mornings when the cook was hung over from the previous night. This applied to lunch as well. For lunch we were provided cold cuts and white bread. It was interesting to note that for dinner we were fed fish caught by previous guests. I was concerned we would starve if the fish ran out and no other guest had a reel/rod. If you do not like what they offer, there are no other choices and they will not take you into town unless they have a scheduled run to pick up supplies.

The staff consisted of one cook, one bartender, and one housekeeper who also served in the kitchen. The employees expect tipping and the housekeeper offered sexual services to the male guests.

The accommodations consist of two duplex cabanas with an additional cabana serving as Capt Brian’s residence in which there is plywood dividing it into two separate living areas with one for guests. The wood was thin and the gaps were large enough to deprive the guest of any privacy. Floor fans were provided but the generator was turned off when the staff either concluded their work or drinking for the night which could be between 10 pm to 2 am. My departure was scheduled for 6:30 am, Capt Brian acknowledged this to me the previous evening, yet failed to turn the generator on, forcing me to prepare and pack in darkness.

There is no hot water and the cold water can be VERY cold. You are provided with one towel and the quality of the towel is not worth mentioning.

The sand fleas are the WORST I have ever seen and I have traveled to the Bay Islands each summer since 2001. In addition, I felt a tremendous sense of danger where I have not felt that in Roatan or the mainland. The locals carry machetes and Capt Brian talked about the them surrounding him on a prior occasion with the intent to rob him.

The locals I met upon my arrival and departure at the airport in Guanaja made disparaging remarks about the End of the World Resort and asked why I chose that resort among the others. I met Americans who had stayed at Dunbar Island who reported nothing but a positive experience.

I do not feel the owner was interested in the comfort and safety of the guest but rather focused on profit. I wanted to go home from the moment I arrived and felt it was a serious waste of money.
