“Needs an update and basic maintenance”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We've visited the hotel every year for 6 years and this was a real let down. The hotel is surrounded by a spectacular botanical garden with peacocks and parrots. The views of the lake are almost spiritual but no credit to the hotel. The service in the restaurant was painfully slow on every occasion we dined there. The staff seemed indifferent and were busier visiting with one another than working the floor. One meal had to be returned, the fish was awful, seemed it was frozen, thawed, and refrozen. The chef concurred with our analysis. The menu needs re-vamping. It's tired. We asked for a mocha and even though they have coffee on the menu and hot chocolate on the menu they said they could not offer us a mocha. really? No manager anywhere to be seen. The roof is missing over the entrance and the rest of the roof has weeds growing out of it. The impression is that the hotel has been neglected. And the final straw is the price - too high for what it is. They don't even include wireless internet, there is a surcharge for this. Sorry, it was once the best place on the lake, not anymore. Go for a drink, tour the garden and stay somewhere else.

“Gem surrounded by volcanoes”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This quaint hotel is on the beautiful Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. The owner has the most beautiful gardens surrounding this property. There are macaws in the tree outside your room, peacocks roaming the grounds, many other birds cheerfully greeting you each morning and spectacular gardens to take an afternoon stroll in. The lake is surrounded by 3 large volcanoes and has several boat tours available for your enjoyment. Frequently you will see ads for 'lovely gardens', but this one is accurate. Getting there is an adventure as well. Especially if you are in a large tour bus! The rooms are large and comfortable, all with a private balcony, and views of the lake. There is a great pool and hot tub, but it does close early at 6:00 PM. Don't miss staying here for a few nights if you are in this area of Guatemala.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great, but the upper floors on the far end have a better view of the lake.

“beautiful setting & lovely hotel”

this place is totally zen! it's a cab ride outside of panachal but that actually makes it nicer as the cities around lake atitlan are very touristy so this place being a bit further off makes it feel like a retreat. the grounds are great w/ a huge inviting pool & jacuzzi & direct access to the lake (people were jumping off of the docks into the lake which wasn't my thing but thought it was great to have that access). the rooms are spacious & nicely decorated & the hotel restaurant had nice food for dinner tho i wouldn't recommend the breakfast buffet unless if it's included in your stay.

also, our stay was only $120/nite which i thought was a steal for a place this nice

Room Tip: actually one complaint i had was that our room was the 1st one next to the restaurant & the bar...

“Decent Hotel with Awe-Inspiring View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed at Hotel Atitlan for 4 nights in December. The view of the lake is the best part of the hotel. All of the rooms have a balcony and most of the rooms have a spectacular view of the glistening lake. Try to get a room on the second or third floor towards the center of the hotel for the best view. The standard rooms are quite basic with a good-sized shower (no tub), a safe and a med-sized tv. But, they were clean and comfortable.

The hotel also has a beautiful garden with a variety of flower and some animals. While the pool and jacuzzi boasts amazing views of the lake, there were too many children using the jacuzzi as a kids pool. The restaurant is decent, although the menu is quite limited. But, what we ate from the menu was all very good.

There's a lot to do in the area. The hotel has a boat that takes you to some of the villages on the lake. Panajachel is great for souvenirs and the hotel has shuttle service for a fee (a 5-minute drive). There's also a nature park for a short hike or ziplining. We also took a bus to the Chichicastenango market for the day, which was great.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel. It's a really family-friendly hotel with lots of young families. And while the rooms are very basic, you won't want to stay inside for long because you'll want to enjoy the breathtaking view of the lake and enjoy the nice weather.

“Wonderfull hotel!”

We stayed here for two nights as part of our Caravan Tour of Guatemala (highly recommended "budget" tour that is not the least budget as far as meals/accommodation goes!) Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful grounds/gardens, various local parrots/macaws and other occasionally noisy resident birds, pretty good buffet meals, lovely "antique" furnishings in rooms (not real antiques, but trying for a plantation style of furnishing, no two rooms alike. One of our travelling companions - Jewish - was quite taken with the carved wooden "Madonna" shrine in her room..}. And the view of Lake Atitlan in the very early morning before the clouds appear is a "bucket list" moment!

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the lake - but its possible they all do - I believe everyone on our to...
