“We will return here whenever we are in Guatemala City”

We are five hours by bus from Guatemala City and needed a place to stay overnight before meeting a relative who was flying in from the states the next day. After reading the reviews on the Howard Johnson Inn, we decided to give it a try. The staff was exceptional in every way, from the manager, who spoke perfect English and was so kind and helpful, to the driver of the courtesy van who took us to the airport and waited patiently for our sister to arrive, to the maid who graciously brought us extra pillows. With a free courtesy van to the airport and later the bus station, an excellent free breakfast with full choice of the menu, and a clean, comfortable room, we felt we got much more than our money's worth.

Room Tip: Rooms on the outside are a little brighter with large windows.

“A Pleasant Stay in Uncomfortable Circumstances”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We had to go to the City (Guatemala City) to do some medical tests and visit the American Embassy. We found the Howard Johnson Hotel was in close proximity to both and had a restaurant on the premises. Being non too comfortable in the City due to the current advisories offered to travelers to Guatemala we wanted to stay at a hotel where we did not have to go out if we wanted to grab a bite of food etc. Since this stay was our first in the City and was not for shopping or fun but for fairly unappealing reasons, we didn't want to have to worry about being in a dangerous part of the city as well. The Howard Johnson was just right, actually across the street from the US Embassy and only 4 blocks from the major medical centers and labs. We also found that the restaurant was pleasant and the food was good (if you eat late like us just ask them to make the two for one sandwiches in one and it will be much better -- try the lomo). In Guatemala like Mexico the big meal is the afternoon meal and the restaurant does good business. Remember, though that this restaurant observes their respect for the dictates of their religion so there will be no pork or for us a bit of a disappointment no alcoholic beverages either. We were able to complete our business and the rooms are spacious and the mattresses are very comfortable. Each room is climate controlled and is quiet where ever you stay in the Hotel. The front rooms also have a hallway decorated with lovely plants well maintained and cared for. It was a pleasure to walk through this lush green hall on our way to the complementary breakfast (which was a full breakfast - not just toast and jam.)

The best part of our stay at the Howard Johnson Inn in Guatemala city was the staff. Since we knew nothing about the city and did not want to be surprised we always asked the Manager about where we were going -- how far, how long when to leave, etc and Cesar Rodas was always available to help and guide us. If we needed to know something he would advise us. Kind and efficient, Cesar made our first time stay in this difficult city a pleasure and we would be swayed to stay again thanks to management putting such quality personal in such an important positions. We were delighted to find that almost everyone we dealt with in the city to be very considerate in dealing with us. We will have to go back but the Howard Johnson Inn will make it easier we are sure. Safe, secure with a wonderful staff and an onsite good restaurant can and will make your stay in Guatemala City just fine.

Room Tip: The front rooms overlooking Reforma with the wonderful plants is the most memorable part to be in.

“Night before flight back”

We stayed here on the last night of our journey to catch an early morning flight back on Continental via Houston. The hotel has a complimentary shuttle to the airport but you'll have to let the front desk know. The rooms have everything you'd expect and the connecting restaurant serves excellent food.

We arrived early (6 AM) having taken the overnight bus from Flores/Santa Elena to GC and hopped on a cab to the Howard Johnson. They let us check-in immediately but then phoned to say they'd charge us but later decided they'd waive the charge (I'm not sure if this usual but I think it was the manager who decided to waive it after he saw us). Breakfast is complimentary and very delicious! I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay near the airport.

“Great second stay, will go back again”

We stayed at HOJO Guatemala 2 years ago and it was an awesome experience. While planning this trip, i wanted a hotel closer to my husband family at zona 1. Everything i looked at was way out of our price range. Decided on hojo again. We got the family suite with 4 queen size beds. The room was kept really clean, bathroom spotless. Every day we got our rooms cleaned and the sheets were changed everyday, trust me i checked. The only 2 complaints i have about this hotel is there was no minifridge/microwave and that the elevator is way to small.
The staff is great, specially Cesar at the front desk. Helpful, courteous, friendly and a very nice gentleman. He is just the nicest!! The Restaurtant is great, everything we ate there was awesome and did not make us sick at all. We actually ate at another place way more expensive and got us all sick. Stick to Geneva at hojo. The Breakfast was great, but i got a little tired of eating the same thing for 10 days. Theres only 4 choices from the included breakfast, you want something else is extra. The hotel was clean and pretty quiet. I dont like that they still give out old type keys, instead fo the keycard. Also wish the whole hotel were smoke free. The smoke of the people 2 doors down crept in, hated the smell and couldnt do anything about it, he was actually smoking outside the room and in front of a window and still it smelled like he was doing it in our room.
The hotel is very close to the airport and the shuttle service is awesome. The driver was waiting for us and even drove us to the rental place the next day. Edgar is the main driver, this guy was awesome. The hotel is located in zona viva, the area is buzzing during day, all day, but after 7 or so it quiets down. Theres plenty of restaurants in walking distance, i recommend calling a cab, be careful. I will go back to Hojo guatemela in a heartbeat. It a good hotel for the money.
