“Guatemala Zona Viva/Holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

Nice place to stay. People at the front desk are really very helpful and kind. Mr. Byron is at the front desk and sees that everything goes fine for guests staying at the hotel.

The area is filled with restaurants. Two blocks to the East is "Panaderia San Martin"; this is a great place for coffe and breakfasts. Also, neaby is Hacienda Real, very fine for steaks and wines. Kloster is 2-3 blocks to the East, good for beer and swiss cheese.

For book lovers, Sophos is a fine library 4 blocks to the East.

Room Tip: Best rooms are those above the 10th floor. Ask for one facing the West side, so you can have a beut...

“Nice hotel located in Zona Viva”

I stayed here back in June of this year while getting some dental work done nearby. There are a ton of really good traditional Guatemalan restaurants nearby and the hotel is very nice as well.

“Nice Hotel, Restaurants Nearby Reviewed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

I stayed several nights here and the best price by far is booking direct with the hotel as the guaranteed lowest price online was 25% higher and they did not give the free breakfast online. Really nice hotel at a good price for downtown. Million restaurants nearby. Try Media Cancha (take taxi) or walk to los Ranchos which is beside or in a large hotel two blocks away.
At Los Ranchos I had the Steak El Presidente, melt in your mouth, they say it is 12 ounces, I think they brought me a half kilo! Share that one! I found Guatemalan steak to be fantastic, better than Argentina. For th,e coldest beer in town go across the street to the little bar which is open air and has ice cold Gallo beer and serves free popcorn - very South American feel to the place. One street over is a Peruvian restaurant that has great lobster for around $30 but very big, also pisco sours for $5.00 and the real thing. Note that Guatemala is not as unsafe as Mexico but getting there, don't recommend families at this time, try Costa Rica or Panama. Not super unsafe but the one in a million is a one in 500,000 scenario here with the drug trade. The new president is a miliary man and he was elected on getting the streets safe again. Having said that you read it more in the papers than you see it on the streets.

“Not what I expected....pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Located downtown, this is not what I expected from the Holiday Inns I've stayed in the US. This property is across from the Westin, which is also run by the same owners. Check in was a little slow, as many outside US hotels require much more paperwork! The lobby was nice and well-serviced. Everyone from the parking attendants to the bartender was well-dressed and friendly. There is a good view of the volcano on a clear day (be sure and ask for a room on that side). I had a non-smoking room on the corner by the elevator; a little noisy when the elevator would 'ring' the floor. The walls in my room were very thin, and I could hear the room next door; but otherwise, the hotel was quiet. This was a full-service hotel...room service, lobby bar, airport shuttle!
The room decor was no-frills; in fact, the furniture reminded me of a Holiday Inn! The paintings on the wall seems There was a flat screen TV with good channel selection and coffee maker (only one pack of coffe though). Nice bathroom with marble tile; no plumbing issues...and best of all, a phone in the bathroom!
The free breakfast buffet was good. My only complaint was that they closed the bar for an entire day because of a holiday on a Thursday. However, the bar promptly opened at 7AM the next day! Overall, I was pleased, and would stay there again, but would like to try the Westin next time. And if you go to either hotel, be sure and visit the KACAO restaurant across the street for an authentic Guatemalan experience!

Room Tip: Dont stay next to elevator, and get room viewing volcano
