“Wonderful location and some great guides”

We spent 4 days here over the 2011/12 New Year. We went for the birds and the wildlife photography but hit a rainy period with rain every day and one day very wet. The cabanas were lovely, nicely designed and the beds firm and comfortable and the food really excellent. We also enjoyed the company of the other guests who came from different parts of the world and were all fun and interesting people. The highlight of the visit was the river trip into the lodge - fantastic - the boat driver George was very good and appreciated that we wanted to see and photograph wildlife and I must say we saw some great things during the 2 hour ride in - including mature iguanas, roosting bats and outstanding bird life. There are numerous activities available at the lodge but our favorite was the early morning birding trip - particularly with the helpful and kind Reuben. Indeed Reuben single-handedly made our trip and just about every guests stay while we were there - he was kind and helpful and funny and knowledgable at every turn. I wish I could say the same for all the guides - there is great variation between the guides and some were not as helpful and interested as the great Reuben- and because of this I give my review 4 stars and not 5. They do lay on extra activities that you pay for (~$50 each) and we did a special birding trip but it was not successful and we got badly bitten by chiggers - we would have been better on the early morning bird walk. The location is superb and the lodge has some nice ground - I wish they had developed the pathways through the forest to explore the wildlife. Finally I must say that the lodge is next to the spectacular Lamanai Mayan ruins - this was a great place culturally and an excellent location for seeing some very nice birds such as Trogons and photographing howlers.

“peaceful hide away in the jungle”

We stayed 4 days at the Lamanai Outpost Lodge over New Years 2011. The lodge is located next to a lagoon, near lamanai ruins and partly in the jungle. We stayed in sea view cabines, however from inside the cabine, you do not have a sea view really, therefore not really worth extra money. Cabines are rustic, with dark wood, but very comfortable. The lodge offers daily excursion which we enjoyed a lot. Sunrise canooing, medicine trail, lamanai ruins, sunset cruise .. We loved all excursions The guides know so much about animals or belice culture. Unfortunately, it rained for 2 days, that was a bit a pity, as excursions were cancelled. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The owner of the lodge even drove us with his personal car to the ferry terminal (1h drive), as it was raining heavily and boat rides were not possible. They go out of their way to serve you!!! nature preservation is very important to them. The food is very delicious and you get plenty of it. (starter, main course, dessert). I can definitely recommend it. 3 nights are perfect.

“Amazing place to stay....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

My husband and I spent 4 days at Lananai Outpost Lodge on our honeymoon. The first of 3 places we visited, the lodge was an amazing start to a fantastic trip. The service, accommodation and tours were first class. The home cooked 3 course breakfasts, lunches and dinners served by the lodge were fantastic and sustained us through the busy activities which the lodge offers. All activities were lead by enthusiastic and professional tour guides who were obviously passionate and highly knowledgeable about the local area and the wildlife and culture. We did all of the tours which are included in the price of the stay plus had a dinner out on the pontoon in the middle of the river which was a highlight. The stars are unbelievable.

We stayed in Cabana 6 which is situated equidistant between the main dining room and the dock. The beds were comfortable and the shower always had hot water. The only issue we had was with mosquitoes, we were there in December and I was bitten quite a lot. We probably weren't prepared enough for this, but that was our fault. Mosquito nets in the bedrooms may have been advantageous.

An altogether fantastic place to stay, highly recommended.

“Great Jungle experience - Shame we didn't see a cat!”

We are experienced travellers having stayed in many safari and rainforest lodges. Lamanai is quite simple but it was perfect for our needs. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful and even our complicated dietary requirements were no problem for them.
My lodge had aircon and a fan but my children's lodge only had a fan. I have been told by the owner that the lodges are being updated and will have A/C very soon.
I did get bitten regularly by the mosquitos - no spray or other deterrent stopped them. We were taking anti-malarial tablets as recommended by our doctor but most of the American tourists were taking nothing.
The proximity to the Lamanai ruins (20 mins walk) was one of the major draws for me and we went there before any tourists arrived and had the place completely to ourselves -that was amazing!
The night tour to catch a crocodile was fun. We went on an airboat like the ones used in the Everglades which thrilled the kids but we were very disappointed when the crocodile that we caught was not more than 45cm long - we laughed so much and asked if we could continue our search but were told that as we had caught a croc it was time to go home. My kids liked the fact that it was a baby and we could stroke it and play with it but I would have liked to catch a big one.
Our only disappointment was the lack of mammels that we saw - I know that it is nearly impossible to see a Jaguar or a Puma but the only mammels that we saw were Howler monkeys - from a distance and a few Agutis (also from a distance). I suppose that going on Safaris regularly has spoiled us as we are used to seeing large animals.
The highlight for me was the two night boat trips and the night walk to the Spanish Church. Look up at the stars. If you live in a city you will be overwhelmed by the millions of stars you can see when there is no light pollution. I would definately recommend this lodge despite the lack of mammels we all had a great time.
