I don't want to sound like an echo to all the other posts, so while I will say that everything from service to value to the cabins to the tours to the food was some of the best I've ever seen and experienced, I'll try to explain the added benefits that made the Lamanai Outpost Lodge better than excellent. It went far beyond having howler monkeys so close to me on the porch that I actually backed up to take them all in.
The first thing that really made my day was how it took half the time that everyone said it would take to get there, and that the road was fine, albeit not well marked, at all, with any good signs, but I guess that's better for the landscape anyways. I was told by many that it could take up to 2 hours, and that I'd be sore if I drove there. I guess things have changed since they've driven there because after 45 minutes, ok 55 because I stopped and gave someone a jump start, and a fun drive through a Mennonite community that felt like rural America, I was there.
Since it was not high season, they were running a special, and it was more than worth it. I was greeted with a smile, and shown to the cabin. It had shared walls with cabins on both sides, but there wasn't any noise issue due to the hard wood and great construction. What a cabin it was! There was even a little fridge to keep snacks and drinks cool in. There was a nice hammock outside on the porch too.
The food was wonderful, all the courses. It was also presented with zest, and the staff really did their job well. They went above and beyond what I expected.
I took advantage of the free canoes, the night walk, and the ruin tour, and spent a lot of time swimming and diving from the dock. The couple staying next door, did the Savannah Birding tour, and ended up helping to free up a Hicatee turtle that was in distress, so they brought the turtle back - the lodge works with those that monitor the shrinking Hicatee population, so they band them, take care of them, and then release them back into the wild - and it laid an egg on the trip back. How neat is that? The same couple really wanted to see jaguar tracks while on a different tour, so their guide went out the day before, found some, and made their trip.
The tour to the ruins was great, and there were only 3 of us, so it was really personalized. I was told that Raul was a great guide, and he did not disappoint. Definitely do the Lamanai ruins tour.
My stay was magical, and I can't wait to return to Lamanai Outpost Lodge with the family.
