“Great customer service at a beautiful resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Our start at Laru Beya started off a little rough for a variety of reasons, mostly being our rental car breaking down just as we arrived at LB. We were happy it happened here! Wynand and Brett were incredibly helpful with trying to get us settled so that we could enjoy our vacation. Wynand reassured us that there was nothing we could do at that evening hour, to relax at the restaurant and we will resolve the issue the next day. It was a minor repair, just a fuse problem. Brett offered to keep watch for our new vehicle from Thrifty, a generous gesture. (Matthew at Thrifty was really great to work with - would rent from them again)

The Quarterdeck restaurant has amazing food. Their chef/kitchen staff is top notch, serving some of the best meals I have had in a while. My new favorite was their "stuffed Jacks" on the breakfast menu; sooooo good! Never ate lunch at the restaurant, but had a couple dinners and again, delicious! Be sure to order the special Quarterdeck drink from Manny.

We arranged a couple of day activities thru LB. Our snorkel day had a bit of miscommunication, and was rescheduled for the next day - not a big deal. The snorkel trip was arranged thru Ocean Pro, across the street from LB. Mike and Alfred were great to work with. Alfred was our captain & guide for our trip out to the Silk Cayes. Alfred really made this an enjoyable excursion with his knowledge and overall personality. Mike was very helpful with trying to arrange a 1/2 day fishing trip for my husband. Unfortunately unfavorable weather cancelled the fishing trip, and we ran out of vacation days, so could not reschedule.

We originally reserved a "garden view" room, as I presumed from the website that there would be a small kitchenette. This was not the case. After talking to Wynand about our confusion, he was able to move us to a room with a kitchenette, which was a "one bedroom suite". Of course there was a price difference, but so worth it! The garden view room is actually an en-suite to the one bedroom suite, larger families can reserve both rooms and open the door between the 2 rooms. If you do not intend to spend any time in your room but just to sleep and shower, the garden view room is good. We wanted to chill out and not have much planned, so the one bedroom suite was good for us. Both rooms were very clean and well furnished.

While in the region we also drove to the Cockscomb basin. Pay at the main road. The park is beautiful; be sure to wear proper hiking/supportive shoes, bring bug repellant. We hiked the Tiger fern trail. Plan on 1:45 to the waterfall & 1:45 back. The map says strenuous hike, and yes it was. Bring plenty of drinking water.

The village of Placencia reminds me much of how Key West FL, was in its day before it became overly touristy. We hope Placencia can keep its laid back low keyed charm with its hidden neighborhoods and local family business'.

We can not say enough about the customer service at Laru Beya. Whenever we saw Brett or Wynand they would ask us if we were relaxed yet - kind of became a joke - we must have looked really stressed out when we arrived!! We feel that the staff truly went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable as possible; within reason. Manny & Alicia in the restaurant, Wynand, Brett and Tim in the front office were all great! All the other employees whom we crossed paths with but did not catch their names - thanks!! We would recommend Laru Beya & hope to return in the not so distant future.

“Beautiful Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We were lucky enough to spent 2 days here in an ocean view room....The sound of the water lulling us to sleep.....The staff, including the friendly bartender Manny and front desk manager Wiant couldn't have been nicer. The Belizian breakfasts with fresh fruit including the Quarterdack smoothie were fantastic......We rented a car for the day to go to a Mayan ruin and one of the employees gave us excellant directions as well as a history of the ruin. I can't say enough about the front desk staff in terms of going well beyond their duties.....car rental, phone usage, a stamp and transport from our boat. Don't forget to play the ONLY miniature golf course in Central America conveniently located on the property....so much fun. I can't wait to go back someday!

Room Tip: Ocean front rooms have a small balcony.

I hate to write a "bad" review of a hotel, but this was disappointing from arrival to departure, with the exception of the restaurant. For $240 USD, I expected far more. To start, the airport transfer that we had pre-arranged (it's an option on their reservation website!) did not materialize. After sitting at the Placencia airport getting no answer from the hotel phone, the Maya Air staff called around and the baggage handler's father took us to the hotel. Lo and behold, the "gray van" that was supposed to pick us up was still sitting in the parking lot. Check in was terse, we were marched to our room--a penthouse oceanview room, I might add--by the manager? owner? who knows. I had to ask that the transport fee be removed from our bill, as we received no apology, no comment, nothing. As I'm examining the room, it's....underwhelming.
In the room itself, there's room for the bed, two nightstands, a minifridge (like a college dorm), a coffeemaker, not much else. No sofa, chairs to lounge in. Hilariously, there's a note that tells you to let the front desk know if you want the fridge plugged in, and there is nothing in it. Again, for $240 a night in Belize, really? No juices, water, nothing? There's a small TV, a wooden built-in closet wall, and a lovely open hole in the wall with what looked like electrical wiring.
There's AC that makes a horrific noise (interior wall-mounted) and a fan.
The bathroom has mismatched tiles, the wood sink surround is worn and old. Again, not $240 per night expectations.
I can't fault the housekeeping, they seemed to be cleaning everything well; it just needs to be updated. The landscaping outside was also very pretty.
Outside, there was a small patio. We could see the ocean, true; if we looked past the pool and craned to the left. There was one chair. Up a steep, steep ladder was a rooftop patio with another chair. Ahh, we thought, the hottub! But no, it had been drained of water and no hose in sight.
My husband went to talk to the manager/owner, and was given 20% off the price. I'll add that there seemed to be plenty of empty rooms, but no offer to change or upgrade was made.
There is no free breakfast. The restaurant staff are gracious, and the food is good. This was the saving grace of our stay.

Room Tip: I would not select the penthouse ocean view room, not worth it

“Long needed vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

We love Laru Beya, having stayed several times over the yrs. I found our unit clean, freshly painted and well stocked. we were literally 60-75 ft from the beach. The pool was super clean, and the staff meet all of our needs.

being our first trip in January I was surprised at the cool nights and super clear sky. We were there for the full moon and wow all the stars came out. dont forget your sweatshirt. Make sure you spend a day at the ruins or a day on the water, both will exceed your expectation. Nothing like standing on a temple 1800 yrs old.

Room Tip: Go into town, the people are friendly and the culture is amazing

“Not what we expected”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

After a good crossing from San Pedro and fun flight from Belize City, we were disappointed on arrival at Laru Beya. It is a worn hotel and our room (Garden View-202) was ''around the back'', very basic and itself worn. A small TV and coffee/tea are provided but no breakfast. No chairs, no table; what is in the room looks as though it was bought from a down town sale room. Even the bed had a melancholy creak when we sat on it. We discovered that the room is nothing more than an ensuite bedroom off a condominium. The 'condo' was appropriately vacant during our 2 day enforced stay. The plus side: bicycles are offered to ride the 8 mile round trip to Placencia Village but don't try it in the midday sun and make sure the tyres are pumped up before you leave; canoes and hoby are also available.

Placencia looks as though most people deserted it 10 years ago and the only folk left are those with no where to go and the 'alternative hippy fraternity' who probably don't knowwhere they are anyway!!. 'For Sale signs' abound everywhere.

In short the price of the hotel is extortionate, it certainly does not offer the 'comfort' and 'quality' its blurb purports and its website is utterly and wholly misleading.

Quite simply, 'happiness' is Placencia and the Laru Beya in the Tropic Air aircraft's rearview mirror!

Room Tip: Do not choose a Garden View room they are really only an Annex to a Condo.
