“Vacation or Real Estate Junkett”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

Sunwing assured me that our vacation would be just that A Vacation. During our first morning briefing with the Sunwing Rep we were introduced to the staff and Dave Smithers (Not officially associated with the Placencia as he lives in the gated community across the street yet he is always on property trying to get people to buy property) With this being said it felt like you are being held hostage on this property. There is nothing for miles the closest town is a 25 minute cab ride and the drivers drink and then drive you... There was only 60 people on the resort 50 of the 60 were seniors ( they were great ) but this is where the atmosphere of the resort takes a downward spiral. Everything on the resort has specific opening and closing times same as any other resort I guess but 10pm that was absurd. Sure the lobby is open but there is NOTHING from 10pm til 7am no coffee, no vending machine NOTHING !!! The BARS CLOSE AT 10pm Folks

The people working there were all friendly yet stand offish, I dont think they really like having to belittle themselves to catering to the SUNWING Vacationers they are much more accomodating to the Residence Community. We stayed in 101 the very first night we seen and killed some large cockroaches and informed the front desk the next morning, They did spray but that was about it.

Food - It was probably the best part of the stay but get there quick they only bring out so much and if you are late your outta luck til the next day or meal time. While we are on the topic of food it appeared to be handled well from the kitchen out to the pier ( by a wagon ) where all food is served listen to me folks its a long walk and there is NO facilities out there so not only do you have a long walk to eat you also have a long walk if you have to pee.

Dont be fooled by anyone from Toronto to The Resort it takes 12 hours... Dont try bring any duty free beer with you either ( Its a Federal Offence to import beer into Belize without a licence ) I almost ended up in prison for bringing some Canadian beer with me.

Pool - it was nice it was clean but its really cold.

Beach - The resort does its best to rake the beach everyday and the loungers are really nice yet the construction going on to build the breakwall is annoying and loud. Also if you want to walk the beach past the property line its fine if your into walking thru miles of debris that includes anything that floats including syringes ( scary)

Grounds - The resort is beautiful there is no disputing that the grounds are well maintained everything looks great, But remember this is a hotel Co-op every room has different ammenities some condos only have 2 beds and a night table and no other furniture.

Bugs - If you plan on visiting this resort bring plenty of bug spray the sand fleas or as the staff calls them NoSeeUms they bite alot and it is painful there is no safe haven from these I was personally eaten everyday, Now thats what the employees say, Yet my experience was being eaten at night in our room I did ask the Doctor in the group and it was a toss up between fleas or bedbugs.

Security - The property has alot of security for a place that is supposed to be safe, With that being said the number of security at night makes one wonder how safe is it if so many security staff is needed.

Costs - Internet 5usd for 1 hour 15usd for 1 day or 50usd for a week we bought the week but its slow. The property offers tours and adventures be advised each and everyone is very expensive 880usd to go fishing in a aluminum 15ft boat... 150usd for a 1/2 hour massage for the wife.
My wife bought a coffe the first morning it cost her 10usd for a cup of coffee.

Activities- Sure they have a volleyball net setup on the beach but the ball provided was all torn up and to be frank there was nobody at the resort to play with... They might have broken a hip.
Kayaks yes they have them.

Water - The beach water is stagnent due to the breakwall that is erected, no waves no motion lots of under water garbage. The water is also infested with Barracuda so have fun with that swim.

Room- We had a 2 room garden suite with a balcony that overlooked the employee entrance and where the food would be prepped onto its wagon for the voyage out to the pier, Alot of staff at times. The room had a small fridge and microwave but you were advised not to use the microwave. Beds were ok for Cuba but a 5 star resort cmon,

So to sum up this review, If you have ever wondered what a regimented retirement home would feel like this is the place to take your vacation or should I say real estate junkett... Another thing the bus ride from the Placencia airport to the resort has a SPEED HUMP every 150 yards it takes forever so bring a sense of humour with you. And real estate for sale signs are everywhere..

The residences across the street are in many different phases of construction and this is where they are trying to get vacationers to buy... Dont do it.

Everyone on the Sunwing group asked me if i would ever visit again, Absoluley NOT , Belize may be beautiful but the Placencia experience ruined it for me.

Also Very disappointed that SUNWING would offer such a place next year Air Canada vacations

Bedtime is 10pm or as they say Lights Out

Room Tip: Pick another destination if your under 60 years old.

“A great way to spend a week”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

My boyfriend and I just returned from a week at the Placencia Hotel. Overall I would say that this resort was everything we were looking for with a few small undesirables.

PROs
- The pool is phenomenal. We have never really been pool people at all inclusive resorts and usually find ourselves between the beach and the ocean for most of the day, but we couldn't stay away from this pool. The lounge chairs on the deck were great and there was never a difficult time getting a seat. The pool bar was always prompt and stocked with anything we needed. The towel service was also good.

- The food was also awesome. Though (as other review have mentioned) there is not much variety, we never had a difficult time finding at least 3 different, amazing options per meal. The a-la-carte was slightly overrated but nice for a change of scenery. The regular restaurant at the pier was great and very accommodating if you had any food restrictions. It does get a little chilly sitting on the dock at the pier restaurant so bring a cardigan. My boyfriend did find the bacon at breakfast to be a bit greasy though and wanted me to include in my review a suggestion to line the bottom of the bacon tray with bread to soak up the excess grease. Other than that breakfast was always great! The Executive Chef is American and always around to chat about food and most of the veggies used in the meals are grown on the resort in the Organic Garden.

- The proximity to Placencia Village is great. The food in town was awesome. Make sure to go to Rumfish for fish tacos as well as some gelato at Tutti Fruti. It is well worth the $1 it will cost you to take the bus into town.

- Everyone both on and off the resort is so friendly. We never felt unsafe. 95% of people speak perfect English and most tourists were Canadian.

- The beer was great! At most all inclusive resorts I often find that the beer is watered down but here you get bottles of Belize-brewed beer and its very tasty!

- The rooms were clean, comfortable and recently upgraded. We had a basic gardenview and have no complaints. The bathroom was very nicely decorated and the shower was awesome.

CONs
- In our mid twenties, we were one of the youngest couples there. It didn't bother me at all, but its something to keep in mind. It didn't stop us from singing some quality karaoke with the older couples though...

- from the time we got to the airport in toronto to the time we got to the resort, it took us a solid 12 hours. Our plane was only slightly delayed so I assume this is typical travel time. The hotel is in the process of building an international airport in Placencia which will cut travel time down by half so that will be nice. We weren't too bothered by the whole thing, but its good to know before you head out there as you lose an entire day

- The excursion that we went on was awesome (cave tubing and zip lining), but it was a 2.5 hour drive there and then back so it was a long day. It was worth it in the end, but a lot of what you are paying for is 5 hours of driving.

- Booking the a-la-carte was sometimes a bit deceiving - on numerous occasions we, and other guests, were told the reservations were full, only to show up to the restaurant and be one of two couples there. We ended up just showing up to the seating we wanted and they "fit us in". I wouldn't recommend doing this, but hopefully this is something hotel management can fix.

- A few of the activities on the resort were not included (ie/ gym, tennis etc). Again, we weren't too bothered by it, but my boyfriend ended up spending the $5/hour to use the gym on a few occasions. Also, the internet is pretty pricey but it works throughout the resort.

OVERALL - the resort was awesome, the people were so friendly, the food was fantastic and our weather that week was perfect. We would recommend this resort to our friends and family in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: bring a few good books, some bug spray and some granola bars or other snacks for the room.

just returned from an incredible stay at "the Placencia"! a co worker of mine recommended the hotel after having been there twice. my wife and i had never been to belize, but we will certainly be returning! the resort is immaculate and the rooms are large and EXTREMELY well appointed. The food was much better than the food I've experiences at all inclusive resorts in other areas of the caribbean an the staff were all very friendly.
LOVED the pool bar!

Room Tip: Stay in a master suite on the beachfront if possible. The views are amazing!

“Beautiful 5 Star Property in Remote Area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

My husband and I recently returned from a week at The Placencia with two other couples. It has an absolutely beautiful location being situated on the Caribbean with a lagoon close by. It is a very low key, relaxing vacation - a perfect place to unwind from a stressful work life and reconnect with your spouse. The hotel staff was all wonderful and quite helpful. We booked three excursions through the hotel - snorkeling, scuba diving, and the Monkey River tour. All were well worth the money. We also rented a car for several days (I highly recommend this!) and hiked Antelope Falls at Mayflower Bocawina Nat'l Park, and visited Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit Mayan ruins. Having a rental car also let us explore restaurants between the hotel and the town of Placencia as well as spend the day walking around Placencia town. We would definitely consider returning to Belize and to The Placencia, but would change a couple of things: (1) We would bring a lot of our own snacks since a variety of food is scarce on the pennisula and dining at the hotel is somewhat expensive, and (2) we would stay for two weeks instead of one!

5 star facilities with modern suites, all ceramic bathroom, floors, cushy beds with duvets and multiple pillows. Not alot of variety of foods, no "trough", but what there was , was prepared to top chef standards. Fantastic staff. Goergous pool. Double wide, 4" thick vinyl padded lounge chairs to die for!! Small crowd (max 140) so we met and sociallized with everyone there. All english speaking and very, very safe.

Room Tip: upgrade to ocean view suiteon ground level. It is right on the beach and contains a full kitchen, b...
