Sunwing assured me that our vacation would be just that A Vacation. During our first morning briefing with the Sunwing Rep we were introduced to the staff and Dave Smithers (Not officially associated with the Placencia as he lives in the gated community across the street yet he is always on property trying to get people to buy property) With this being said it felt like you are being held hostage on this property. There is nothing for miles the closest town is a 25 minute cab ride and the drivers drink and then drive you... There was only 60 people on the resort 50 of the 60 were seniors ( they were great ) but this is where the atmosphere of the resort takes a downward spiral. Everything on the resort has specific opening and closing times same as any other resort I guess but 10pm that was absurd. Sure the lobby is open but there is NOTHING from 10pm til 7am no coffee, no vending machine NOTHING !!! The BARS CLOSE AT 10pm Folks
The people working there were all friendly yet stand offish, I dont think they really like having to belittle themselves to catering to the SUNWING Vacationers they are much more accomodating to the Residence Community. We stayed in 101 the very first night we seen and killed some large cockroaches and informed the front desk the next morning, They did spray but that was about it.
Food - It was probably the best part of the stay but get there quick they only bring out so much and if you are late your outta luck til the next day or meal time. While we are on the topic of food it appeared to be handled well from the kitchen out to the pier ( by a wagon ) where all food is served listen to me folks its a long walk and there is NO facilities out there so not only do you have a long walk to eat you also have a long walk if you have to pee.
Dont be fooled by anyone from Toronto to The Resort it takes 12 hours... Dont try bring any duty free beer with you either ( Its a Federal Offence to import beer into Belize without a licence ) I almost ended up in prison for bringing some Canadian beer with me.
Pool - it was nice it was clean but its really cold.
Beach - The resort does its best to rake the beach everyday and the loungers are really nice yet the construction going on to build the breakwall is annoying and loud. Also if you want to walk the beach past the property line its fine if your into walking thru miles of debris that includes anything that floats including syringes ( scary)
Grounds - The resort is beautiful there is no disputing that the grounds are well maintained everything looks great, But remember this is a hotel Co-op every room has different ammenities some condos only have 2 beds and a night table and no other furniture.
Bugs - If you plan on visiting this resort bring plenty of bug spray the sand fleas or as the staff calls them NoSeeUms they bite alot and it is painful there is no safe haven from these I was personally eaten everyday, Now thats what the employees say, Yet my experience was being eaten at night in our room I did ask the Doctor in the group and it was a toss up between fleas or bedbugs.
Security - The property has alot of security for a place that is supposed to be safe, With that being said the number of security at night makes one wonder how safe is it if so many security staff is needed.
Costs - Internet 5usd for 1 hour 15usd for 1 day or 50usd for a week we bought the week but its slow. The property offers tours and adventures be advised each and everyone is very expensive 880usd to go fishing in a aluminum 15ft boat... 150usd for a 1/2 hour massage for the wife.
My wife bought a coffe the first morning it cost her 10usd for a cup of coffee.
Activities- Sure they have a volleyball net setup on the beach but the ball provided was all torn up and to be frank there was nobody at the resort to play with... They might have broken a hip.
Kayaks yes they have them.
Water - The beach water is stagnent due to the breakwall that is erected, no waves no motion lots of under water garbage. The water is also infested with Barracuda so have fun with that swim.
Room- We had a 2 room garden suite with a balcony that overlooked the employee entrance and where the food would be prepped onto its wagon for the voyage out to the pier, Alot of staff at times. The room had a small fridge and microwave but you were advised not to use the microwave. Beds were ok for Cuba but a 5 star resort cmon,
So to sum up this review, If you have ever wondered what a regimented retirement home would feel like this is the place to take your vacation or should I say real estate junkett... Another thing the bus ride from the Placencia airport to the resort has a SPEED HUMP every 150 yards it takes forever so bring a sense of humour with you. And real estate for sale signs are everywhere..
The residences across the street are in many different phases of construction and this is where they are trying to get vacationers to buy... Dont do it.
Everyone on the Sunwing group asked me if i would ever visit again, Absoluley NOT , Belize may be beautiful but the Placencia experience ruined it for me.
Also Very disappointed that SUNWING would offer such a place next year Air Canada vacations
Bedtime is 10pm or as they say Lights Out
