We booked our trip about 2 months in advance and were counting down the days to our arrival at The Green Parrot in Placencia. However, we have not been on any international trips since our honeymoon and I needed a new passport for my married name. The State Dept had all the paperwork they needed in May and could not get my passport to me in time for our trip! NIGHTMARE! I received it 7 days after we were supposed to have left. All of our travel arrangements had to be changed...
The good news is that The Green Parrot was so easy to work with, since we had to rearrange the dates of our stay and had already paid for the trip! They were most accommodating, which alleviated much of the stress caused by the passport drama. We were able to change the dates of our stay for no charge and with no added stress!
Upon our arrival, we met Leo, who showed us to our room - a precious little cabana right on the water! We stayed in the Green cabana, which is the closest to the water (amazing view of the sunrise and sunset) and the furthest from the main office and dining area, which makes it a little quieter and more private. On the first floor of the cabana is the kitchenette, bathroom, vanity, dining area, and an area to just sit and relax with a sofa and rocking chair. The second floor is more like a loft with a queen size bed and a separate smaller bed. There are a few shelves and an area where you can hang clothing. The loft overlooks the first floor of the cabana and has an amazing view outside of the Caribbean Sea. There is no central air or window units, but there is a ceiling fan in the bedroom and a separate stand-alone fan on the first floor that can be moved around. We ended up moving that fan upstairs since it was a little warmer in the cabana than we are used to at bedtime. The great thing is that the windows are screen mesh and wooden slats that can be closed for privacy and opened for air flow. The Sea air feels amazing as it blows through the cabana! It is also wonderful to hear the water splashing ashore as you wake up! The bathroom has a stand-up shower (no tub), a sink and counter area, and a separate vanity, which was very nice! The water in the shower tended to fluctuate between hot and cold, but we got used to it and figured out how to make it comfortable! There is a wonderfully comfortable hammock on the porch of the cabana that was great at the end of a long day!
There is a lot to do locally in and around Placencia - Monkey River tours, Jaguar Preserve, SCUBA, snorkeling, fishing, etc! You can also easily take day trips to many other cities and sites within Belize from Placencia. Leo was an amazing source of information and assistance in setting up tours and helping us navigate around the country! We had a rental car, but The Green Parrot can also make many arrangements for you.
We had breakfast and dinner at the resort everyday. Every meal we had was amazing! Isabel is the chef and she is as nice and caring as she is talented in the kitchen! We ate the continental breakfast on many mornings, but if we were planning a particularly strenuous day of hiking, we ordered something a bit larger and more filling from the breakfast menu. We never made it to lunch at the Green Parrot, since we were generally out on some adventure, but we did have a lunch packed for us to take with us. We made it back in time for dinner and we never ordered off the menu, although it is available. We simply asked what was available and Isabel would tell us a few options and we would choose. We ate something different every night and were more than satisfied! The dinner portions are large and beyond delicious! Everything is very fresh and tasty! The drinks at the bar are awesome and perfect for the tropical location! The local beer, Belikin, is very good also! They also have various wines and liquors available at the bar.
By the 3rd day at the resort, we felt like we were part of an extended family. Leo was very kind and generous in helping us with anything that we needed. We ended up taking a day trip to Tikal (Guatemala) and he went all the way with us to the border, helped us go through customs and immigration, and introduced us to the driver who would bring us to Tikal. He made sure we were comfortable and content to venture off into a different country with people we had not yet met. We both felt that if Leo referred us to anyone, we would be able to trust that we were in good hands. And, we were! Isabel was very caring and loving. We returned one day from a long hike through the mountains to a 1000 foot waterfall and our shoes were muddy and dirty. She noticed that and immediately found a scrub brush, soap, and a pot for us to clean our shoes! This was such a sweet and caring act and we were just touched by it! Isabel and Leo aren't the only ones who made our stay great. All of the staff members at The Green Parrot were wonderful! Upon leaving, we were very sad to say goodbye to all of the wonderful people who made our stay so great! Isabel gave me the biggest and most heartfelt hug that actually brought a few tears to my eyes after we bid farewell.
All in all, we will return some day. The Green Parrot is certainly a gem along the wonderful Maya Beach of Belize and we would highly recommend it to our closest of family and friends!
Room Tip: The Green beach house is the closest to the water (best view) and the furthest from the dining area...
