This is the perfect place to explore Southern Belize on your own. I spent a week out in San Ignacio doing tours to Tikal and the ATM Cave, and had spent a few days on Caye Calker. ATM and Tikal were definitely worth it , but I found Caye Calker too touristy. I headed to Stann Creek, and stopped in at the Hummingbird Inn after checking out it's web site in Cayo. The Inn is beautiful, with large, clean, new rooms, with giant showers. The house is on a beautiful property with many birds (including parrots!) and the rooms have access to a large Veranda overlooking the Maya Mountains. The owner, David, was helpful in organizing several trips I wanted to do. I went out to the Southern Cayes snorkling for the day, and David arranged for me to go to the southern Lagoon for some fishing and manatee watching. He even came along. All these places were within half an hour of the Inn. David also took me to see a Garifuna drum maker in Dangriga. I also took my rental to several national parks not far from the Inn, including the Cockscomb Basin;and took a day trip to the Blue Hole National Park, about forty minutes away. If you''re looking for exceptional living quarters, but want to experience a Belize not so touristed, this is the place to stay. The food was great too, and David was flexible about dinner time if I was going to return a bit later. The cook, Bonita, serves up local food mostly, but always asked what I would like to eat that day.
