“Nice spot on the beach, in a very different type of town.”

Unless you're going to Tobacco Caye, love Garifuna drumming, or are visiting somewhere on the Hummingbird Highway for some sort of eco-adventure... Dangriga is probably not for you. The town is a bit strange...It's not set up for tourism at all and for some, the town might make them feel uneasy.

Pal's was actually a decent hotel. Reasonably affordable with a nice balcony and good breeze, internet, and clean rooms (stay on the top floor). The sunrise in the morning was excellent. Staff were nice.

The only place you can eat here is the Chinese Food Restaurant, or drop by the Riverside Cafe to feel extra welcome.

If you're planning on going to Tobacco Caye...ask at the Riverside Cafe and Dock for William.

“Great”

A few friends and I visited Dnagriga for 2 days in November. We were specifically there for Settlement Day which is Nov. 19th. We got 2 rooms at Pal's. They were both on the bottom floor and the balconys were on the beach. The rooms were very simple, i.e. two beds, fans, tv, dresser, and bathroom. We did have the water shut off on us for a few minutes a couple of times, however this is frequent all over the country. We spent quite a bit of time talking to the owner. he is a very interesting guy who has many great storys to tell you. Ask to see the book he wrote which gives you some good history about the area.
The town of Dangriga itself was dirty as the previous reviewer stated, however most of the people were very friendly and the food was amazing, especially the BBQ pork. We ate at the little street stands that they always warn travelers about and we had no problems. The festival itself was so much fun. On the night of the 18th there is a HUGE party in the streets with everyone drinking and dancing and drumming! It was amazing and the locals were happy to have you join in. The parade the next day was also fun.
All in all Dangriga is not a resort destination, but it has so much culture and life it is worth traveling to. Maybe it is just this good thought during their big celebration.

“Pals=O.K, Dangriga=Hole in the ground”

As far as the accommodations go, Pals is probably one of your best options in Dangriga, but that's not saying much. It is relatively clean and is located at the only decent (but small) beach. The rooms are clean but basic, overall fair for the price.
Now for the town of Dangriga; first off never visit Dangriga on a holiday, especially if that holiday is on a Sunday, because they will then celebrate the next day as a holiday too. Now, I've got no problem with them celebrating holidays, but it would've been nice to know this ahead of time. Our guidebooks made no mention of this, nor did either the kayak rental company or the folks at Pals. We arrived to find that there was not a single store open, no grocery store, no convenience, no restaurants, so we ended up eating a freeze-dried meal we had brought as back-up for a camping trip we had planned. The reason we had gone to Dangriga was to visit the Cockscomb Wildlife reserve and kayak at Tobacco Caye. When we got to Belizewe found out that the buses where on strike and we couldn't find a way to get to Cockscomb or anywhere else for that matter. One thing that really got me was the owner of Pals guesthouse knew I was ticked off with the lack of options for us, but kept telling me to chill and relax. Easy for him to say. WHEN I'VE SPENT ALL THIS MONEY AND HAVE 7 DAYS TO SEE BELIZE, LOSING TWO DAYS IN DANGRIGA WILL HAVE YOU TICKED OFF! He wasn't very helpful at all, and when I had asked all these questions before arriving, I was told "no problem, we can arrange these things when you get here"
Don't expect to do any swimming in Dangriga either, the water is very murky, there's only a very small beach to sunbathe at. The whole town is very dirty as well, garbage everywhere. The locals just don't seem to care and just keep littering.
We ended up going to Tobacco Caye for a few days after, and that ended up being equally as frustrating. You can read my review of Gaviotas to hear about it. After you've read my two reviews, you'll probably think I'm just too picky and wouldn't be happy with anything, but that's not the case, it's just that Dangriga and Tobacco Caye suck!
We also stayed at Caye Caulker Condos and that was excellent, mind you more expensive, but well worth the extra coin.
