“A perfect place to go to get away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

My wife and I spent a week at Kanantik earlier this month and enjoyed every minute of it. We had never been to Belize, but had traveled throughout the Caribbean and wanted to try something new. It was a great place to go when what you want to do is sit in the sun and enjoy the warm weather. We did not take the excursions but we talked with the guests who did and they all seemed to enjoy them. The food is exceptional

Room Tip: Bring anything that you think you may need for the week because the area is remote and unless you ta...

“A quiet, peaceful getaway”

We just returned from a wonderful stay at Kanantik Reef & Jungle Resort. It was the most relaxing, peaceful resort experience we have ever had. Everything from the beautiful, spacious cabanas, to the delicious food & the excellent service was exceptional. We felt very much at home & appreciated the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the resort. One of the highlights for us was the opportunity to kayak in the calm coastal waters. We were able to view the exceptional bird life as we made our way down the coast. We also enjoyed the 3 excursions with our guide Pete, who made each trip memorable. We highly recommend this resort to those who are looking for a change from the typical resort experience - just be sure to bring your bug spray!

“Great Anniversary”

We stayed at Kanantik with our family for our 30th wedding anniversary. It was one of the best experiences we have ever had. The staff really took care of us -- from the delicious and varied meals, to the comfortable accommodations, to the fun tours -- we had a wonderful time. If we ever wanted anything, someone would get it for us right away. Not only was the staff very friendly and helpful, but the tour guides were very knowledgeable, especially Agapito. Finding the large crocodile on the resort was very exciting. I particularly enjoyed being able to fall asleep listening to the ocean waves every night. Overall, I highly recommend this all-inclusive resort. We thank the staff for making our stay so pleasurable.

“Upscale Nature”

This is an upscale resort, but what is nice is that it is still very in tune with the surrounding environment. The cabanas and main lodge fit in nicely with the jungle surroundings, and in place of glass windows are screens.

Chances are you'll see some cool wildlife on the property. I saw an alligator, praying mantis, baby turtles (all the guests eating dinner stopped to ensure that the hatching turtles reached the ocean), two awesome caterpillars, an ant colony on the move, jumping fishes, some neat birds, bats, bat-sized moths, not to mention the birds I can't name. Other guests saw even more. The snorkel trip is fantastic (saw two stingrays, barracudas, an eel, jellyfish, sea cucumbers, etc.), and I heard but didn't see a large animal moving nearby on the Jaguar Reserve hike. The creatures sometimes got a bit too personal (a frog jumped on me while I was trying to fall asleep), but this is the price one pays for the experience I guess.

One bugger on the trip was that I got a ton of insect bites. About 120 on both feet (I counted) and a few dozen more on the rest of my body. These were pretty painful. I don't know how many of these I got at the resort, as I went on the Jaguar Reserve hike early on (where there were a ton of bugs). I can't really say how effective the insect nets around the beds were- they weren't perfectly enclosed, but they seemed to keep most of the bugs out.

This is a criticism of Belize moreso than the resort; if you are traveling to Belize and are a target for no-see-ums, beware. Some people don't react to the bites, others like me get pretty bothered by them. By all means come prepared with pants, long-socks, long shirts, pajama pants, long pajama shirts, closed-toed shoes, insect repellent (try to get around 25% DEET), after-bite (ammonia), calamine lotion, and your preferred anti-histamine.

If you are looking for an upscale nature immersion, this is a great place. If you hate bugs and don't care much for animals, you'll probably be better off elsewhere. You will get small insects in your room, and could get a frogs, scorpion, and/or cockroach.

“Great stay”

We stayed at Kanantik for our honeymoon and had a great time! The food was amazing, we did not have one bad meal. The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and top of the line. Our honeymoon package included 3 excursions: snorkeling, Mayan Ruins and the Jaguar Reef hike. The Jaguar Reef hike to the waterfall was by far our favorite and simply amazing. I will never forget swimming in the pool underneath the waterfall. We loved the romantic dinner out by the pool as well, definitely a nice touch. Falling asleep every night listening to the waves crashing was so relaxing and just what we needed after the mayhem of planning a wedding!
