This is an upscale resort, but what is nice is that it is still very in tune with the surrounding environment. The cabanas and main lodge fit in nicely with the jungle surroundings, and in place of glass windows are screens.
Chances are you'll see some cool wildlife on the property. I saw an alligator, praying mantis, baby turtles (all the guests eating dinner stopped to ensure that the hatching turtles reached the ocean), two awesome caterpillars, an ant colony on the move, jumping fishes, some neat birds, bats, bat-sized moths, not to mention the birds I can't name. Other guests saw even more. The snorkel trip is fantastic (saw two stingrays, barracudas, an eel, jellyfish, sea cucumbers, etc.), and I heard but didn't see a large animal moving nearby on the Jaguar Reserve hike. The creatures sometimes got a bit too personal (a frog jumped on me while I was trying to fall asleep), but this is the price one pays for the experience I guess.
One bugger on the trip was that I got a ton of insect bites. About 120 on both feet (I counted) and a few dozen more on the rest of my body. These were pretty painful. I don't know how many of these I got at the resort, as I went on the Jaguar Reserve hike early on (where there were a ton of bugs). I can't really say how effective the insect nets around the beds were- they weren't perfectly enclosed, but they seemed to keep most of the bugs out.
This is a criticism of Belize moreso than the resort; if you are traveling to Belize and are a target for no-see-ums, beware. Some people don't react to the bites, others like me get pretty bothered by them. By all means come prepared with pants, long-socks, long shirts, pajama pants, long pajama shirts, closed-toed shoes, insect repellent (try to get around 25% DEET), after-bite (ammonia), calamine lotion, and your preferred anti-histamine.
If you are looking for an upscale nature immersion, this is a great place. If you hate bugs and don't care much for animals, you'll probably be better off elsewhere. You will get small insects in your room, and could get a frogs, scorpion, and/or cockroach.
