My husband and I stayed at the Corozal Bay Inn in November 2011 for a week or so.
We are at a loss to understand the bad reviews of this quaint resort style hotel.
First off, our reservation was for three cabins, but due to illness and one friend travelling stand-by, we were the only cabin that kept our reservation. Although cancelling rooms on short notice is sometimes inevitable, Douglas took the news in stride. We were not charged more for our room nor was a deposit held back due to the circumstances.
Our room was very nice. Bed was comfortable and kept clean for the whole week. Linens looked very new. The towels were fluffy, large and exchanged every day. Because the roofs are thatched you can hear the geckos running around. We happen to love geckos and welcomed them. They don't bite and want to be further away from you than you do they. They are part of the tropics. The air conditioning didn't fail once.
The pool was extremely clear and clean. One day while we were there, Douglas and Maria hosted one of the schools for a pool party. Of course the pool was a little dirty after that, but it was shocked that night and clear again the next day.
You can't go wrong with the food at the Corozal. Maria does a bang up job. Her botanas platter was delicious and could feed two people easily. We also had natchos, pizza, wings and other tasty delights. All were more than we expected. We had dinner at Tony's next door once and was dissapointed with the taste, presentation and price of food. A single glass of orange juice - mostly ice - was $8.00bz. Outrageous! The bar at Corozal was friendly and stocked.
The owners, Douglas and Maria, are gracious hosts. Ask them anything about the area and they have the answers. Also, unlike some places we've stayed over the years, they take the time to make sure all is good with you.
Insofar as the wifi, we had need of it as we were in Belize buying real estate and whenever we needed the internet it was there. We had no internet interruption whatsoever. There are definately enought channels on their satelite tv. Far more than you need on holidays.
We have travelled all over the world and have stayed in a variety of accommodations from 1 star to 5 star. We have also owned a motel for seven years in Canada. We don't know what the star rating system is in Belize, but in Canada, 2.5 stars is extremely clean, some amenities. I would give Corozal Bay 4 out of 5 stars as they have a bar, restaurant, pool, and great rooms with ac and tv. What more do you want.
In conclusion: Corozal Bay Inn Resort is not a "nice hotel for an undeveloped country." It is a nice hotel no matter where it would be situated. The bonus is it's situated in Corozal, Belize! How lucky for all travellers.
