“Most Excellent Stay”

My husband and I stayed at the Corozal Bay Inn in November 2011 for a week or so.
We are at a loss to understand the bad reviews of this quaint resort style hotel.
First off, our reservation was for three cabins, but due to illness and one friend travelling stand-by, we were the only cabin that kept our reservation. Although cancelling rooms on short notice is sometimes inevitable, Douglas took the news in stride. We were not charged more for our room nor was a deposit held back due to the circumstances.

Our room was very nice. Bed was comfortable and kept clean for the whole week. Linens looked very new. The towels were fluffy, large and exchanged every day. Because the roofs are thatched you can hear the geckos running around. We happen to love geckos and welcomed them. They don't bite and want to be further away from you than you do they. They are part of the tropics. The air conditioning didn't fail once.

The pool was extremely clear and clean. One day while we were there, Douglas and Maria hosted one of the schools for a pool party. Of course the pool was a little dirty after that, but it was shocked that night and clear again the next day.

You can't go wrong with the food at the Corozal. Maria does a bang up job. Her botanas platter was delicious and could feed two people easily. We also had natchos, pizza, wings and other tasty delights. All were more than we expected. We had dinner at Tony's next door once and was dissapointed with the taste, presentation and price of food. A single glass of orange juice - mostly ice - was $8.00bz. Outrageous! The bar at Corozal was friendly and stocked.

The owners, Douglas and Maria, are gracious hosts. Ask them anything about the area and they have the answers. Also, unlike some places we've stayed over the years, they take the time to make sure all is good with you.

Insofar as the wifi, we had need of it as we were in Belize buying real estate and whenever we needed the internet it was there. We had no internet interruption whatsoever. There are definately enought channels on their satelite tv. Far more than you need on holidays.

We have travelled all over the world and have stayed in a variety of accommodations from 1 star to 5 star. We have also owned a motel for seven years in Canada. We don't know what the star rating system is in Belize, but in Canada, 2.5 stars is extremely clean, some amenities. I would give Corozal Bay 4 out of 5 stars as they have a bar, restaurant, pool, and great rooms with ac and tv. What more do you want.

In conclusion: Corozal Bay Inn Resort is not a "nice hotel for an undeveloped country." It is a nice hotel no matter where it would be situated. The bonus is it's situated in Corozal, Belize! How lucky for all travellers.
Happy Trails, Marie and Vern Hunt

“Very Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

We arrived in Corazol on a whim and picked this place based on a good review in a 2 year old Lonely Planet. The office was closed when we arrived (about 4:00pm) and we had to search around for the owner. We appeared to be the only guests on the expansive grounds which probably should have been a sign. The restaurant was also not open so we walked down to Corozal Blues (average) for dinner. When we got back, the disco was in full swing (at least the lights and sound system) but there did not appear to be any customers. Instead, the two staff we saw just played loud music until late and we were forced into wearing ear plugs in order to sleep. And speaking of sleep...the beds were very uncomfortable and the bedding old and musty. (Pillow cases were heavy shams that we are sure had not been washed in some time.) Lastly, the pool looked more like a pond. Admittedly we were there early season but the pool was just plain neglected. I doubt it ever looks much different. The place has potential but it is going to take money and a whole lot of TLC to ever realize it. We stayed one night and were outta there!

“Too many reasons for not staying here”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

We booked here via the internet because it was on the water and claimed to be the only hotel in Corazol with a pool. Yes it is on the water but no it is not the only hotel with a pool. Sure wish we had read the tripadvisor reviews prior to booking. The room was heavy with mildew smell and the bedding looked like it had been there for years. Beds were rock hard and pillows are the cheap chipped foam. There was fresh crap on the counter, bird or lizard, not sure which. And yes Doug there are feral lizards in Belize, in every single corner of the country.Floors hadn't been swept, hot water hadn't been fixed until the evening and then no water at all. Also no remote for the AC (doesnt work without it) All these things were fixed promptly but the room obviously wasnt checked before we arrived. Corazol is a pretty sleepy town but you think a ten year hotel owner would at least know what was available to do. Couldn't even recommend a restaurant other than a classic Belizean BBQ stand on the beach, which was rather good by the way. All other answers to questions were vague at best. Maria the cook was charming and the two meals we had were good albeit a bit expensive for Belizean standards. No breakfast or lunch available on site though. At $110Bz a night this place is way overpriced. Should be about 50 or 60 at the most. Would I stay here again? No way!

“Mid-Range Dirty”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

We choose and booked the Corozal Bay Resort online, but paid cash for all five nights planned upon our arrival. First mistake! We walked into the lobby which smelled horrific and paid for our stay. Douglas, the owner looks as though he sleeps in his clothes and hasn't seen a razor in years. His wife Maria is lovely though. We went to out cabana and I almost gagged at the smell. There was some sort of excrement on the vanity and no one had swept the floor in a long time. Remember, this hotel was in the Belize book as 'mid range' so I wasn't going in fussy. We immediately grabbed two bicycles (my husband put air in the tires) and went in search of cleaning agents. After a good swipe with Clorox wipes I knew it was cleaner, but the smell never left, no matter what.
The restaurant was open at 6:00 with a young man who left us in the dark despite a candle at our table and then went back to his computer. He took our order, gave us our drinks, grabbed his backpack and left. We did get our food which was good and we enjoyed the meals we had there, but you may have to yell up to remind them to open the place.
The conversations we had with the owner were, in hindsight, hilarious. He will talk about how difficult it is to get anything done on Belize and how frustrating it is to run a business, but he is certainly part of the problem. Stained sheets and pillow cases, shredded comforters and rock hard mattresses did not lend well to a good night's sleep. I get that business had dropped off, but this guy lives close to a WalMart in Chetumal and uses the most disgusting bed linens I've ever seen! The first night we were there the owner claimed that he was full, but only four cabanas were booked. He doesn't have a clue about boats, tours, taxis, etc. in the area and of course we weren't refunded our early departure. He apparently turned away a big group to accommodate us. Fair enough that the website states no refunds, but in the interest of customer service and possible repeat patronage...Anyway, he lied to us about being booked and he was useless as far as info about his own community. He states quite openly that he wants to return to Canada. I hope he isn't planning on running a business there. Never again! Oh...and we are returning to Corozal on our way to Cancun as we leave....anywhere, but there..

Room Tip: Don't stay here! Negotiate next door.
