As a budget minded traveler, I'm always looking for exotic travel at a reasonable price. With this in mind (and, with a little computer research), I thought it might be interesting & fun to visit Belize. I found a low cost flight to Cancun (Mexico) and I arranged for transportation to Belize (as far as Belize City-if I wanted to go that far) via ABC Shuttle service for $100.00 (which is a great price considering that one of the vulture cabbies at Cancun airport wanted to charge $60.00 just for a ride to the bus station). Anyway, I had pre-selected Hokol Kin Guesthouse in Corozal to be my base of operations. Hokol Kin (actually Hok'ol K'in-loosely translated "sunrise") is a clean, basic, perfectly functional guesthouse located on the bay's edge-ideal for budget minded guests. There is a small restaurant & separate bar located on the premises. The owners (Aaron & Lucy) are friendly & laid-back. As may be known, Belize is an English speaking country. So, for me, getting around via bus was easy, inexpensive-but, slow. Corozal is close to the Mexican border. At the border is a duty free zone with a few casinos and a million shops all seeming to sell the same things. A place to be avoided-particularly because one needs to pay an "exit fee" to visit there. Which makes no sense because the duty free zone is in Belize. But, the place (Belize) is -after all- located in Central America, so, it would probably be a little unrealistic to expect things to be completely problem free. Back to Corozal. It's close to Mayan sites (one dating from around 500 BC is right across the bay). In fact, Corozal was built on top of an ancient Mayan city. With proper planning, one could stay busy for 5 or 6 days (without losing any time) depending on what the person wanted to do (Mayan sites, diving, cave tubing, parks, Belize City (has a reputation of being run down & dangerous), etc. I don't think Corozal has any real night life-it's just quiet & peaceful (a few bums might ask for some money, but, I don't think it's dangerous). So, to sum up-Belize is interesting. Corozal is a nice place to stay in Belize. In Corozal, Hokel Kin is a nice place to stay for the no frills traveler (although they do have wireless internet, airconditioning in some rooms & cable tv). As far as I know, the only really bad things about Belize are the strong sun & millions of mosquitoes.
