My wife, two teenage daughters and I stayed here in Dec 2011 and loved it. We spent two nights in the King Jungle View/Oropendola Room, and three in the River Valley View/Laughing Falcon Room. Both were very nice, with a fold out futon for the kids. The Laughing Falcon Room has a great balcony and view of the jungle and river below. The staff keep the rooms well cleaned. Colleen and Alan are on site and are great hosts. Jen and Jose are very attentive and helpful with Guest Services. Jen's husband Chris, despite being a NY Yankee baseball fan, does a wonderful job as Chef making dishes from local markets. Hopefully he publishes his cook book soon. The grounds are well kept, and beautiful to walk around. For dinner, we pushed all the dining room tables together and ate with the other guests so we could share stories of the days adventures. Great fun!
We hired a driver to takes us from and back to the Belize City airport, but there are rental cars available across the street from the terminal. The drive (about 1.5-2hrs) is fairly easy, on paved roads, until the turn off from the Western Highway in San Ignacio, where the road turns to a series of pot holes for the last five miles. We took day trips to Barton Creek and Mountain Pine Ridge (Rio Frio Cave, Rio on Pools, and Big Rock Falls), which we enjoyed; you get up close and personal with the stalactites and stalagmites at Barton Creek, and swimming at Rio on Pools and Big Rock Falls is a blast. We also went to Tikal (paved roads all the way) but found it very crowded, possible due to the fact it was Dec 21, the winter solstice. I imagine 12/21/12 will be even worse since it's the end of a very long cycle of the Mayan calendar. We went with drivers/guides each day, but, again, if you don't mind driving slowly on bumpy dirt roads, Barton Creek and Mountain Pine Ridge can be done with a rental car. I understand the logistics of getting a car across the border to Guatemala and Tikal are difficult. I do worry the tourist traffic may destroy many of the sites. It's easy, for example, to steer one's canoe right into a stalagmite at Barton Creek. Several of the buildings at Tikal have graffiti and are crumbling due to acid rain. Still, the view from the top of Temple IV is incredible.
