“Best Decision Ever”

When I travel, I look for places that are unique to the environment, locally owned/operated, in a beautiful rural setting, and not too expensive. Cohune Palms met all these requirements and exceeded my expectations. I should have posted a while ago, but feel a responsibility now in response to some of the recent posts. I honestly feel, with all respect, that the few negative reviews do stem from misconceptions.
As far as the cabanas themselves, they were thoughtfully built and maintained on property that has been in the family for generations. They are unique and fun, and definitely fit with my fantasy of staying in a jungle. I loved the location by the river, the lightening bugs, the tiki torches at night. Rope swings brought out the the child within. They had character, charm and ambiance that made for an unforgettable Belizean experience. For me, this is destination travel at its best.

Melanie is the best cook I've ever come across (that's something everyone agrees on!). It was great to have locally produced, home cooked meals. Isaiah was fun to go tubing with and was a great guide for telling me about the life along the Mopan. I felt Mike treated us as real people, not just tourists. One of the pleasures of staying there, was that we got to meet and talk to locals (his friends included), not just be surrounded by other tourists, though it was certainly nice to visit with them too.

We didn't have a rental car, but found it a piece of cake to take the shared taxi's from Bullet Tree Falls in to San Ignacio where you could take another taxi or buses anywhere you want to go in the country. We were able to easily visit many Mayan sites on our own, by using local taxis. Mike was super helpful in helping us plan the guided tours we did. We didn't want to do a "canned" tour and he assisted us in finding a perfect guide (Tony) to take us exactly where we wanted to go (Big Rock Falls, Barton Creek Cave, Butterfly Ranch and lunch at Frances Ford Coppela's place), on a private tour, at a fair price. Even if he hadn't been available, with the free internet access and the multiple tour companies in San Iganicio, we certainly felt we had options.

If folks do advanced research on Belize travel forums, they will see that cash paying discounts are almost always available and preferred over credit cards (which are excepted as well).  I don't really see what the big deal is.  When using a credit card in Ireland recently, there were hefty foreign transaction fees, etc.  Its just a part of travel out of the States, in my opinion. I'm a budget minded traveler, but I wouldn't let a 4% credit card transaction fee entirely make or break my good time. How much is that, really, per night at CP? Less than $4.

When we were there, the border was kinda scary.  I know, because I kept myself informed (something kind of important when your traveling).  The comments about Mike being untrustworthy because he gave safety advice on traveling across the border… not the way I see it!  To me, it shows he cares.  Chances are we wouldn't be victims to violence, but being cautious, listening to local advice, and keeping informed about local conditions is just smart, savy traveling.  His advice was based on real events that happened to real people, and I don't think it shows lack of character that he would tell folks to be extra careful.

I highly recommend CP for adventurous travelers, lovers of great local food in a beautiful, rural setting, and for independent travelers who want to get a feel for the local flavor. I also found it a romantic destination where my hubbie and I could relax, enjoy and play. It is one of the most memorable places I have ever stayed, and the people who run it and work there are fabulous! We were invited to a local soccer game and to a community beach bbq. Thanks Mike, Melanie, Isaiah and Tony for your wonderful hospitality. In my opinion, it is the locals that really made it so special. It would not be the same (to me) if they had a full time concierge and front desk staff, and hotel shuttle all available to cater to us tourists. You would go there exactly because you are looking for something a bit off the beaten path.

We loved every moment of our stay and wouldn't have stayed anywhere else.

“Didn't like it and got screwed by guide they recommended”

I did not like this hotel at all. I went there because I thought it would be peaceful since it was supposed to be in the jungle. Instead all I heard were the sounds of construction, dogs barking, and other people's loud music. Not peaceful at all. The owner of the hotel hooked me up with a tour guide that totally screwed me over. He charged me $85 for a 6 mile walk through the village and a 20 minute float down the river. he was supposed to take me either rappelling, to mtn pine ridge, or to hike in the rainforest to see monkeys. I didn't do any of those things. When I first asked the owner for help to book a tour with one of the companies in San Ignacio, he told me I could use the pay phone. I was the only guest in the hotel, and at times, the only person. I felt trapped and couldn't figure out how to get out of there. Thank goodness for Melanie who worked there and was helpful as much as she could be. In the end, I left two days early because I was so unhappy there (even though i paid for the two extra days early). Mike has no business running a hotel.

“Wonderful enviroment and service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

My family traveled to Belize for a week. First we drove from Belize airport for our adventures in the jungle. While the drive on the western highway was not at all beautiful we were happy to arrive to a very well landscaped and clean lodge. Don't let Bullet Tree Falls scare you away, hidden away along the Mopan River under giant Cohune palm trees lies these wonderful cabanas. The owner Mike is very helpful and can schedule whatever tour you would like to take. We highly recommend the ATM tour with Pacz. We instantly felt at home with Melanie who cooked our breakfasts and dinner just outside our cabanas under a thatched roof dining area. It is a small and intimate atmosphere where you can choose to dine alone or exchange conversations with other travelers about your day. We just loved it. Thank you Mike and your staff for making our trip to the jungle so enjoyable.

Room Tip: There are only four cabanas so just ask about each before you book.

“Not worth the $ but not all bad”

Ok, first of all I have to completely agree with Esperanza's review. I didn't want to write a review because we loved Melanie so much but after reading Bevin's response to Esperanza's, I feel like I have to make a comment. Everything Esperanza said about Mike is true, he did the same thing to my husband and I. We were on our honeymoon and were really excited about this place. The food was great, Melanie is great, but don't count on anyone to really help you plan your trip or set up outings for you. Mike was completely MIA the entire time, it was like pulling teeth to get a hello out of him. It doesn't help that he sits upstairs smoking an insane amount of pot and hanging on the grounds with his friends, which makes for an uncomfortable honeymoon in my opinion. We aren't prudes either, but at least pretend you're running a business while you take $100/night from us! The last day, after not speaking to us at all, he came up to my husband and asked if we could pay cash. We didn't have that much cash on us. Later in the night, when we went to check out, Melanie told us that Mike asked her to call him when we were getting ready to check out. I made it perfectly clear that there was no point as we were NOT going to pay cash. He had the nerve to make us wait 10 min to check out while he drove back to the hotel to try to intimidate us into paying cash. We again told him NO! He then offered to drive us into town (yeah right) so we could get $ out of the ATM. I couldn't believe the balls on this guy when he did NOTHING to help us the whole trip and then wants us to incur ATM fees so he can spend our $ right away. He then proceeds to tell us that "well there will be an extra tax if you want to pay with a card" EXCUSE ME! that was nowhere in any information we were given at all. He thought that would deter us from paying with a card. It didn't. Bevin knew this happened because Melanie and Mike both spoke to her on the phone while we were there to try to mediate the situation. When we got home I wrote Bevin with everything that happened which is why I am super appalled that she has the nerve to pretend like it didn't happen to someone else and act like the reviewer is lying. She knows Mike did the same thing to us and that's essentially why I now feel obligated to write this review! Totally left a horrible taste in our mouths on our last night there for our honeymoon. We shouldn't have had to put up with that. Mike is totally unprofessional and seeing Bevin's response to that review just put me over the edge!

Greetings - thanks for your comments. I just wanted to respond quickly - I will briefly respond directly to the "appalling" part of the earlier management response - only to say that I actually explained why cash is preferred and certainly didn't deny that most business owners in Belize prefer it and many add the extra percentage onto their bill to cover the bank fees - so be prepared for that in other establishments. At any rate - we will most likely only be accepting cash now - that includes traveler's checks which will help everyone avoid the added fees. Thanks for the compliments about Melanie - she will appreciate it!

“peaceful little paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

We stayed in the off season last fall (september) We didnt have reservations and showed up kind of late on evening and Melanie was more than accomodating (even offered to cook us some dinner after she had already cleaned up, I settled for an easy bowl of fruit :) ) The rooms are CABANAS! Not swanky hotel rooms, very basic accomidations. Perfect setting on the river. The river however wasn't "beautiful" due to the off season it was murky and brown so we didnt get to take advantage of the awesome rope swing. The food was great and Mike arranged a couple tours for us very last minute as well....I would definately stay again!
