“Love, love, love...”

This place is great! It is right in the jungle with beautiful grounds. We enjoyed a night walk and exploring paths. The river is fun to splash around in too. We saw gorgeous flora and fauna. The Kinkajoos appeared every evening like clock work. The food was yummy but not cheap. Great service too. I would go back to this resort in a heartbeat!

“Great location, good value but weak service”

We rented a casita here for four nights and had a good time. The accommodations were good value for money - clean and roomy and well furnished though the bathrooms was quite run down with a shower that had anemic flow and shoddy finish. The meal plan was a good deal and $40 per person, we had all three meals included and they were surprisingly good for the money. We enjoyed many of the trips organized by the front desk - some third party, some their own. In our case, we enjoyed the horseback riding and and canoe trip back, the visit to the Mayan caves and a trip to the mayan ruins in Tikal, Guatemala. The hotel also runs a botanical garden that is delightful for morning and evening walks and educational to boot. The biggest problem here is service - the front desk and receptionists were all sullen and borderline rude, taking no pride in their jobs. A couple of the waiters in the restaurant were pleasant but the rest not. the bartender made one feel like he was doing you a favor. Overall, I'd recommend the place but warn not to expect much in the way of positive attitude.

“Beautiful Place. Great food, nice staff. Extra info here re: day trips in the jungle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We wish we had maybe a few extra hours at DuPlooy’s to look around the gardens, but our schedule was just too packed! The people there were wonderful, specifically Jose and Shirley, the wait staff.

Info for our day trips in that area: ATM cave and our tour guide, Danny Portillo was awesome. I would highly recommend him to any future guests. He was very knowledgeable, responsible, respectful and careful. Also, we spent more time in the caves then any of the other groups that day and even got to some special areas because our group was so great. We were supposed to meet him in town that morning, but somehow he came to pick us up instead. On the way back to DuPlooy’s we wanted to stop for dinner, so he took us to Sanny’s restaurant outside of town which was fabulous. The shrimp ceviche was amazing and the rest of the food and service also. I would recommend it although watch out since their ice isn’t purified. I have to say that cave tubing was a little disappointing (and really crowded) after ATM, so I would recommend to people to go cave tubing first. I guess we would have but didn’t really have the time. We also did the jungle tumble at Jaguar Paw which was cool but a really short ride. They let us each go twice though. I would tell anyone else going to re-apply bug spray in between events as the bugs up in the jungle there were awful! Our Tikal trip was fun, but really expensive compared to the other day trips. We really enjoyed the view from the tallest temple and were lucky it was partly cloudy that day.

“Beautiful lodge situated in the jungle beside a meandering river.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

We just spent a week at Duplooys and it was the most relaxing week of any vacation yet. The staff worked as a team, and all really did love their jobs. They were friendly, informative and very willing to give you background information on Belize. If they did not know an answer the reply was “sorry I don’t know but I will find out”. This meant a lot to us because some people try to bullsh** you just so they have an answer. It was also a nice feeling to know the owner Judy was around and very approachable. She would stop by for coffee in the morning and check on her guests.
There was a good variety of different day tours, (caving, Maya ruins, zip lines) that we could go on, or stay on site and do horseback riding, river tubing, canoeing, or tour the beautiful Botanical Gardens. I think my new favourite is river tubing…it is just so peaceful and the scenery was fantastic. We just had to let the office know before 5:30pm the evening before, and if you forgot…they would find you to make sure you got to do what you wanted. The front desk also gave us suggestions and helped us with our choices. They also looked after all the bookings, guides and in some instances our packed lunch. We alternated days doing on site and off site tours and that really worked well for us.
The meals were fantastic. Breakfast and lunch menus were quite varied and the food was Belizean so don’t expect a burger and fries. The dinner menu was limited to a meat (chicken, pork or lamb), or fish, or a vegetarian entrée. We started dinner with bread, then soup or salad, followed by your entrée and finished with a desert. The dinners were all very tasty and very well presented, my compliments to the chef!
The room we booked was a bungalow, so we had a fridge and stove. The only thing we used the stove for was to heat water for coffee and the fridge to keep our water cool. We had a loveseat and coffee table that we used to pour over the day trips we were going to take. The bed was king size and I found it very comfortable. There was also a porch with a hammock (my husband and I fought over who would use it) where we would check email with the free WIFI. To get to our room, we had to walk along the boardwalk. As I don’t see as well as others at night I used a flashlight but it does have small lights lining the way.
The bar/breakfast area was a great place to relax and meet people. It is raised so you are more in the jungle canape. We saw several different types of birds each day. Every day we would join the other guests in discussing our day and what we would be doing the next day. It was nice way to get to know the other 20-30 guests by first name.
All in all, I feel it was one of the best holidays I had. Great food, friendly people, exciting side trips and scenery that was spectacular.

Room Tip: I liked the bungalow as it had more room and a small kitchen.

“Wonderful getaway - great adventure starting point”

Lovely lodge in the middle of the jungle. It was fascinating all the birds you could observe. Great dinners. The staff was wonderful, very attentive. The day trips were excellent with great guides. The Belize Botanical Gardens are next to the lodge and are very well maintained. It is a dirt road back to the lodge but very manageable. Spent an afternoon down by the river, very peaceful and relaxing. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: I was there myself and jungle lodge room 4 was great. Perfect location.
