Crystal Paradise is on a pleasant piece of property about 600-700 yards from the Macal river. We arrived at dark around dinner time. After checking into our room (#8) we walked down to the open air "restaurant".
Our meals at CP were good hearty homemade stews, roasted meats, very good flour tortillas, ham & eggs for breakfast, fresh fruit, homemade desserts. Honor bar system; beverages were always available.
Some reviewers mention that the meals were included, and I think it mentions both on the website - a little confusing. Our bill had the meals listed separately, no big deal.
Booked a trip to Tikal thru CP. Jerome drove us to the Guatemala boarder, helped us thru to our driver / guide, Hugo, on the Guatemala side. Our trip to Tikal was very enjoyable; Hugo was very knowledgeable and made the day enjoyable. Hector picked us up at the boarder at the end of the day.
We decided to take some canoe out, I believe Hector drove us to the drop off point. Trip down the Macal was relatively uneventful, peaceful with a couple small rapids. Saw some fighting iguanas in the trees, one fell into the river! Stopped off at Chaa Creek for lunch. I recommend doing this. The river walk from the canoe base thru the bamboo overhead was beautiful. To get to the restaurant, where the trail seems to end, take a right - cross over the creek and follow paved path to restaurant. The shrimp conch ceviche here was fantastic! When we visited CP the canoe exit point for CP is not well marked. The exit point is on the right bank and the sign for CP is on the left bank. Look for the hanging rope. Its easy to pass up.
We were in room 8, a deluxe thatched cabana. It had 2 twin beds & 1 queen bed. A desk & chair & armoire. The room was clean. The pillows should be replaced. The pillow filling was what I would describe as "chopped foam" and have seen better days. The water pressure in the shower was more of a haphazard spray. I'm not exaggerating when I say it took a good 10 minutes to receive luke warm water. Both nights we were there dogs barked on and off all night. The jungle sounds were pleasant, dogs not.
Chilly at night in January; be sure to pack a couple of long sleeve items, pants, light jacket. Bring a flashlight or 2, its very dark. Wear lots of sunscreen on the river, gets very hot & high sun exposure.
When driving to CP from the airport, plan on about 2 hrs w/o stopping. The road to CP off of the Western Hwy is partially paved but mostly dirt/clay. The roads are in very poor condition in most areas, so rent a 4x4 and take your time. We were very happy with renting a car from Thrifty - ask for Matthew.
CP is a good location for many of what the Cayo has to offer.
