“This was a great little hotel”

We used San Ignacio as a center to go out and do some excursions. This was a perfect little hotel for that. There were plenty of restaurants within walking distance. We loved sitting out on the small deck area that wraps around the perimeter of the upper rooms. This is where everyone met at the end of the day to swap stories of their adventures. The rooms were clean and there was hot water in the early morning and in the evening. The family running the guest house where very friendly and welcoming. We were woken up a couple of mornings fairly early from barking dogs, a crowing rooster and some noisy trucks but this is no fault of the hotel. We were there during the slow season so it wasn't as noisy as it would be during the winter season but I would recommend you take ear plugs for noise. Someone recommended them in a review I read and I'm so thankful I took some. I used them on the water taxi out to Caye Caulker because the noise from the engine hurt my ears. The San Ignacio Resort is located at the top of the hill from the Hi-Et and they have a lovely pool area where you can spend the day for 5.00. It was well worth it to get some relief from the summer heat and humidity. I would recommend this guest house for anyone that is looking for an inexpensive and clean room when touring this part of Belize. Our room was 20.00 per night and I believe it's 40.00 per night in high season. I look forward to a return trip to Belize and also to the Hi-Et.

“Good advise, nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

When booking a tour in San Ignacio, we were advised to stay in Hi-et, sounding like Hyatt, but definately more budget ;-). We did stay there and like it ... a lot. Cheap no frills place, nice welcoming family, good accomodation, warm water and a fan. Recommend it!!

“Cheap, you get what you paid for.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2009

Cheapest hotel in town, bedrooms look really old, and divided among themselves by wooden ¨walls¨. As a result, you can clearly hear the guest next door snoring (I'm happy he was alone and not with his missus). Old ceiling fans that don't work, doors with no lock (you get a padlock to close the door while you're out). To complete, small roaches walk in the bedrooms and in the bathroom at night. Go only if you're counting your pennies.

“Good value for extended stay”

We stayed 10 days at the Hi-Et while in the process of moving to San Ignacio, the price was affordable for that amount of time and we had seen the outside of the hotel and thought it looked nice.
We made our reservations over Skype, from the States, and I didn't expect anyone to have any idea who we were when we got there a month later. To my surprise they knew us, were expecting us, and had our room ready. The room was very clean, small but organized to give as much space as possible. The bathroom had a smallish shower which gave hot water about once a day, I couldn't determine a pattern.
The water and electricity both did go off at different times, the same as the rest of the city. Power and water outages are to be expected in this country and should not reflect badly on the hotel itself.
A nice thing about the hotel was that you had to walk through the family room/owner's home to get to the guest rooms, which made us feel very safe.
The biggest drawback was that it sat on the corner of two main streets, one of which was undergoing construction. In addition, it is across from Martha's, one of the most popular tourist hotels in San Ignacio. There was a lot of noise, a lot. But this is difficult to get away from in Belize unless you are out in the rurals, again - I would not fault the hotel.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hi-Et, we felt comfortable and safe, even when stuck in the hotel room with mild food poisoning.
The owners are accommodating and friendly, they accepted payment from us each evening since that is how we preferred to pay. They were excellent about giving us our messages if someone came by to see us while we were out.
I would definitely recommend the Hi-Et as a long term place to stay, for an excellent price and comfortable surroundings.

“A good hotel in San Ignacio”

After a disappointing night in Elvira's, we discovered the Hi-et, which, for a few dollars more, gave us a private bathroom and a much better quality room. A double room cost us $25.

The Hi-et is a family-run hotel in a colonial style house. To get to the rooms you have to walk through the house, past the kitchen and living room with family photos, and a parrot in a cage, which adds to the family feel of everything. There is a really nice porch like area to hang out on outside, and inside there's a common area with a TV, although it wasn't working when I turned it on. Towels are provided and they have hot water. The beds are comfy and clean. There is a computer with internet you can use for I think it was a dollar for a half-hour, but it's not very fast.

The family who runs the hotel is really nice. They gave us information about how to get to the Guatemalan border and let us keep our stuff in the hotel while we did a tour during the day, and then let us use their own bathroom before we left.
