We stayed 10 days at the Hi-Et while in the process of moving to San Ignacio, the price was affordable for that amount of time and we had seen the outside of the hotel and thought it looked nice.
We made our reservations over Skype, from the States, and I didn't expect anyone to have any idea who we were when we got there a month later. To my surprise they knew us, were expecting us, and had our room ready. The room was very clean, small but organized to give as much space as possible. The bathroom had a smallish shower which gave hot water about once a day, I couldn't determine a pattern.
The water and electricity both did go off at different times, the same as the rest of the city. Power and water outages are to be expected in this country and should not reflect badly on the hotel itself.
A nice thing about the hotel was that you had to walk through the family room/owner's home to get to the guest rooms, which made us feel very safe.
The biggest drawback was that it sat on the corner of two main streets, one of which was undergoing construction. In addition, it is across from Martha's, one of the most popular tourist hotels in San Ignacio. There was a lot of noise, a lot. But this is difficult to get away from in Belize unless you are out in the rurals, again - I would not fault the hotel.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hi-Et, we felt comfortable and safe, even when stuck in the hotel room with mild food poisoning.
The owners are accommodating and friendly, they accepted payment from us each evening since that is how we preferred to pay. They were excellent about giving us our messages if someone came by to see us while we were out.
I would definitely recommend the Hi-Et as a long term place to stay, for an excellent price and comfortable surroundings.
